(Witness) History Daniel Cornelius witnessed Here is one version of the Cornelius name taken from CORNELIUS ROOTS AND SHOOTS by G. G. 'Jay' Cornelius-5358 Filbert St.-Paradise, CA 95969 (1993).

'The Cornelius family name goes back at least to 300 BC when it was recorded that there were sixteen clans, or houses, of his family name. They were members of the noble families of the Roman Republic. During the Punic Wars, each of these Cornelius groups adopted an additional name that identified each separate house or clan. This practice was apparently discontinued some time later.

Eggerton's book FAMOUS BATTLES, shows that Cornelius families produced some well noted Punice War Gererals. Cneius Cornelius Scipio and his brother Publius Cornelius Scipio both Roman Gnerals, were killed in separate battles in Spain during the conflict with the armies of Hannaibal in 211 B. C. Publius had a son also named Publius who, like his father, became a Roman General. He participated in the conquest of Spain and a few years later also engaged Hannibal's Army in Africa and defeated him at Zama in 202 BC. Publius Cornelius was then considered a military genius and was given the honoray title of Publius Cornelius Scipio 'Africanus'. Later records show a Roman Commander Cornelius but the house of Clan name 'Scipio' is omitted as is also the honorary title 'Africanus' Julius Caesar's first wife was Cornelia Cornelius Cinna, whom he married in 83 BC. She was the daughter of a wealthy general Lucius Cornelius Cinna. A year later they were divorced dure to the insistence of Cornelia's uncle and her dowry was returned to her.

England was invaded by the Roman Legions of Julius Caesar in 55 BC. This was the beginning of the Roman Conquest, an occupation that lasted almost five hundred years. It seems reasonable to assume that a few Roman Cornelius families first arrived in England during that period.

Another interesting bit of ancient history in which the Cornelius family appears was found in the book 'All Pompeii The City Rediscovered'. Pompeii was a resort city of wealthy Romans, located near the base of Mt. Vesuvius, not far from the present day city of Naples, Italy. On 24 Aug. 79 AD, Mount Vesuvius erupted and devastated the entire city of Pompeii, covering it with several feet of volcanic ash and sulphur fumes. The old city has been under excavation for many years. Many of the old original structures that were not destroyed by the precedding earthquake have been found to be intact, still standing with furniture, pictures and statues all in place. Archaeologist have identified many of the old structures also, including the owners and occupants of some f the dwellings ata the time of the eruption. One such owner listed of particular interest was a Publius Cornelius Tages along with a picture of his old excavated house. His first name and family name are same as those of the two Roman Gererals previously mentioned but the house or clan name is different, indicating that he was undoubtedly a member of another Cornelius house or clan.

The following was copied in part from the 'Pompeii Book': 'House of Ephebe, exccavated in 1925, was the property of the rich citizen Publius Cornelius Teges, who had embellished his dwelling with Greek and Hellenistic works of art amont which was a splendid bronze Ephebe from which the house derives its name.....'

In 251 AD, a Saint Cornelius was named Pope of Rome. Two years late a dissident group influenced the Emperor to have him banished and martyered in 253 AD.(for which he was later canonized). No records were found of the Cornelius family name for the period described as the 'Dark Ages', which began soon after the fall of the Roman Empire in 476 AD and lasted until around the middle of he 15th Century. There is some evidence that there were at least a few Cornelius families in England during the religious persecutions of the 17th Century, and that some of them migrated to Holland during that era. This suggests a solution to apparent conflicts in genealogical research where one source shows a Cornelius born in England but another source shows that he migrated to America from Holland. Other records show a Cornelius coming directly from England, and others coming from Germany.

Another History of the Cornelius name.

The name Cornelius, as a family name, is one of the oldest on genealogical records, dating as it does to 212 BC. The Latin meaning of the name is 'HORN', seems to typify the sturdy indomitable characteistics of the family-- Unlike many family names as Stevenson, Olson, Johnson and others, that have from generation to generation changed or modified their spelling, the name of Cornelius has never varied in its spelling, althought it is posssible that such names as Cornelis and Cornell, etc are varieties of the same name. It is, however, a significant fact that every branch of the family has the same tradition of Roman or Italian origin, while the Crest and coat of Arms point directly to Rome and the Crusades, for the earliest of the name known were soldiers and the family undoubtedly spread over Europe at the time of the Roman Conquest, and to this day we find families of he name Cornelius in Italy, France, Sweden, Germany, Holland,England, and Scotland. In Josephus, the first historical mention we have of the name is Peblius Cornelius, 218 to 212 BC, when Marcus Turius Camillus, who was a General in the Roman Army chose Pblius Cornelius for his second in Command. Camillus fought against Hannibal in Italy, and Peblius Cornelius was sent to Spain to fight against Hasdrubel, the brother of Hannibal and was killed in battle, 212 BC. We gleam from the 'The Social Wars of Rome' that in 90 BC Pompey sent 5 Roman Legions under the joint leadership if Marius and Cornelius Sulla. Cornelius Sulla Afterwards conquered the Insurgents in Rome in 88 BC and after the election of the Consul left at once for Greece. Later in 54 BC he was with the armies of Ceasar in the invasion of Britain and it is reported that he remained in Britain. His son Faustus Cornelius, at the Siege of Jerusalem in 64 BC, was the first man over the wall, leading his men. (See 'Wars by the Jews' in Josephus, pg 614, also 'Antiquities of the Jews' pg 413) Mention is also mad of Cornelius, son of Cereo, as a trusted messenger of Claudius Ceasar Germanius. Caius Cornelius was questor, or Secretary , of the Treasury in Rome under Julius Caesar BC 45. Corneliius, the brother of Longrid, is mentioned in the first great famine about this time. In AD 37 to 41 we have the account of Cornelius the Centurian, who was commander of the Italian Cohort at Caeserea, as the first Gentile convet to Christianity. Plutarch tells us in the 'Life of Marcellus', that when Tiberus was Consul, he selected Cneius Cornelius as his protege. Marcellus succeeded Pontius Pilae as Consul. There was a Cornelius, Fourth Bishop of Antioch, the third City of Rome, AD 167. The next mention of the name is that of 'Cornelius, Bishop of Rome'called the 21st Pope. He was exiled and probably martyred AD 253. We find frequent mention of the name in early English history. In 1559 John Cornelius, a welshman and Jesuit Priest, was executed by the Archbishop of Cantebury for alleged treason. More later. Chances are good that Cornelius ancestors are deserters from the Roman army that was in England. I find many Cornelius that I have researched come from England or Holland. (TJM.)
