     Mrs. Towner was a clerk for the secretary of state and was employed in the payroll department of the Springfield Police Department.
     Surviving are her husband, Edward R; a daughter, Nancy Peratt of Sherman; two stepdaughters, Vickie Lee Hill of Huntington Beach, Calif., and Susan E. Padilla of San Pedro, Calif; a son, Edward Ludtke of Pana; a stepson, Richard E Towner of Springfield; five grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; a great-grandson; a sister, Marjorie Painter of Springfield; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
     Services will be at 10 am Monday at Staab Funeral home, with the Rev. Michael Mullink officiating. Burial will be in Camp Butler National Cemetery.

MADELIA - Mrs. George (Cora) Gronewold, 76, Madelia, died Saturday at Kaufman, Texas, as the result of injuries she suffered when strucck by a car in Kaufman. She and her husband were on vacation.
Funeral services are set for Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at the Methodist Church in Madelia with burial at the Ft. Snelling National Cemetery at Minneapolis at 2:30 p.m.
Visitation is at the Sandberg-Cummins Funeral Home in Madelia. The casket will be closed.
She is survived by her husband; sons, Clement J. of Lake Crystal, Philip and Gerald of Lewisville; daughter, Mrs. Richard (Kay) Gillespie of Lewisville; 19 grandchildren; sisters, Mrs. Lillie Lewis of Truman, Mrs. Lucille Daniels of Troy, Ohio; brothers, Ed Halvorson of Thompson Falls, Mont., Willard Halvorson of Hanska.
She was born Jan. 22, 1895 in Linden Township, Brown County, to Mr. and Mrs. Clement Halverson. She married George Grnewold July 17, 1920 in Linden Township.
The couple farmed near Lewisville until moving into Madelia in July 1971."

Anna Gronewold Dies Here at 87
Mrs Anna Gronewold, 87, died early today at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Ray Chandler, 5 miles southeast of here, where she has lived for many years.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 3pm in St. Martins Lutheran church with the Rev. W. T. Meier, pastor, in charge, preceded by a prayer service at the Shaw-Messer chapel. The body will be at the chapel until the services.

Burial will be in the Mt. Hope cemetery.

Mrs Gronewold was born in Germany and came to the United States with her parents in 1884. Two years later she was married to Behnard Gronewold at Goodland, Kansas. After farming in Kansas for nine years, they moved to Chatsworth, Ill, where they lived until coming here in 1911 to farm in Sheridan township.

She was preceded in death by her husband, who died in 1920, one daughter, who died in infancy, one sister and three brothers.

Surviving are three daughters, and seven sons. Mrs Ray Chandler and Herman, Watertown. Mrs. Roy Rowley, North Platte, NE, Mrs. Dick Meyer, Wolcott, Ind, John, Omaha, George Portland, Ore; Edward, Ortonville; Henry, Deusmann, Wis, Ben, Clear Lake, Fred, Sioux Falls.

He moved to the rural Ocheyedan area in 1908, where he attended the Ocheyedan country school through the eighth grade. He was united in marriage to Albertina Ida Rueter of Ocheyedan on January 28, 1930, at Ocheyedan, Iowa. After their marriage they farmed in the Ocheyedan area until 1968, when they retired and moved to Ocheyedan. He was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church, Horton township, Ocheyedan, where he was a former elder and trustee. He was a former member of the American Lutheran Church of Melvin, Iowa, and of the St Peter's Lutheran Church of Ocheyedan. He sold Lowe seed corn for 25 years and was an assessor for Ocheyedan township for four years. He wassed away Dec 22, 1985, at the Osceola Community Hospital at the age of 82 years, 10 months and 11 days. He is survived by his wife, Albertina Ida; one daughter, Mrs Richard (Wilma) Bremer of Ocheyedan; one son, Myron D. of Orange, Calif; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and three brothers.

Obituary: Illinois PEORIA -- Charles W. Hartwig, 89, of Bel-Wood Nursing Home for the past 6 1/2 years died at 1:46 p.m. Saturday, May 3, 1997, at the home.
Born Jan. 16, 1908, in Bartonville to Henry and Lena Light Hartwig, he married Bernice Notterr on Dec. 23, 1933, in Peoria. She died April 16, 1983, in Peoria. One brother and two sisters also preceded him in death.
Surviving is one daughter, Marianne Hartwig of Morton.
He was a tool grinder for Caterpillar Inc. for 42 1/2 years, retiring in 1974.
He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Peoria.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Cumerford-Endsley-Diggle Funeral Home. The Rev. Steven Tibbetts will officiate. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Lutheran Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to his church or to the American Cancer Society.

Others going to Goodland were Chris's sister Etta Hartwig and brother Fred Hartwig. Fred went back to Illinois in a year or two. All homesteaded in Kansas.

They stayed with Andrew and Lena Saathoff in a sod house. Lena was a sister to Hilka.

Chris sold the farm in the fall of 1892 and stayed with Ben Goes til spring of 1893. Jackrabbits were so thick Chris shot them from the kitchen door. The Jacks ate the corn from the corn piles.
