Emmett H. Hartwig, age 82, of rural Ocheyedan, Iowa, passed away at his home on Wednesday, May 7, 2014.

Funeral Services will be Monday, May 12, 2014 at 10:30 A.M. at the
American Lutheran Church in Melvin, Iowa. Rev. Judy Johnson officiating.

Burial to follow at Ocheyedan Township Cemetery in Ocheyedan, Iowa.

Visitation will be Sunday, May 11, from 3:00 to 6:00 P.M. with the family present from 3:00 to 5:00 P.M. at the Andringa Funeral Chapel in Ocheyedan.

Emmett Henry Hartwig was born on May 25, 1931 in Ocheyedan, Iowa. He was the son of Henry and Marie (Boeke) Hartwig. He lived his youth in Ocheyedan where he attended school. He served in the United States Army from February 1952 to November 1953, as a combat engineer, working at finding mines. He was honorably discharged. He was employed at Arco Dehydrating Plant in Lake Park, Iowa.
He married Junice Willemssen in 1954, they divorced in 1983.
Emmett was employed at Standard Oil for many years. He did custom farm work and farmed on the family farm, until he had a stroke in 1987.
He married Claramay Ann (Schwebach) Kraft on August 13, 1991 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. They lived on the family farm in rural Ocheyedan.
Emmett loved to watch his son, Dan, farm and his dog went with him everywhere. He restored old John Deere Tractors and drove them in parades. Emmett and Claramay enjoyed traveling around the United States visiting family. They also liked going to basketball games, watching Minnesota Vikings Football and Twins Baseball.
He was a member of the American Legion Post #326 of Ocheyedan and the V.F.W. Post #7373 of Osceola County. Emmett was a member of the American Lutheran Church in Melvin, Iowa. His favorite hymn was, "How Great Thou Art".
He passed away on Wednesday, May 7, 2014 at his home in rural Ocheyedan.
Those left to cherish his memories are his wife: Claramay Hartwig of Ocheyedan, IA; his children: Judy Wolterstorff of Melvin, IA and special friend, Paul Wimmer, and her son, Joshua Wolterstorff and his son, Izik; Peggy and Llyn Sorensen of Melvin, IA and their children, Jennifer and Adam Douma and their children, Abigail, Caden, and Brady of Ashton, IA, Lucas Sorenson of Cedar Falls, IA, Brittany and Brandon Elgersma of Sanborn, IA; Dan and Kelly Hartwig of Ocheyedan, IA and their children, Amie and Steve Elser of Ocheyedan, IA and their children, Keytin and Kyler, Rachael Votrobeck and special friend, Jeff Smith, and her children, Aubrey and Cooper of Hartley, IA, Caleb Hartwig; Connie Riedemann of Ritter, IA and her son, Niel Riedemann of Des Moines, IA; Sherry Hartwig of Spirit Lake, IA; step children: Michael and Barb Kraft of Jacksonville, FL, and children, Matthew and Danielle and girls; Mitzi and Dwight Glade of Ocheyedan, IA and their children, Jesse and Nick; Melissa and Shawn Elsing of Worthington, MN and their children, Tori and Porter; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his son, Jerry Hartwig; his parents, one sister, Evelyn Westpal and one brother, Raymond Hartwig.

Memo Evelyn had a baby girl in 1949 and named her Carmen. She later married Lyle Bowden and had another baby girl and named her Shelly. After that marriage didn't work out she married Lester Westphal. Lester adopted both girls and became their father. They were engaged in farming until hard times took its toll. They moved to Rapid City, SD and lived there until retiring, and then moved to Southern IA where Evelyn developed cancer and passed away.

He stayed about two years and then went back to IL. Fred lived at Wing, Charlotte, Danforth, Freeport, IL and then moved to Ocheyedan, Iowa around 1907. There he purchased 160 acres of land and raised his family. He later sold the farm to John and Anna (Hartwig) Radunz. He continued living with John and Annie until his death.

Born March 10, 1915, in Breda, Iowa, to John H. and Ida D. Johnson Hartwig, he married Clara Janszen on Feb. 23, 1946, in Peoria. She died
Dec. 11, 1987, in Mapleton. He also was preceded in death by two infant daughters, Marjorie Hartwig and Marita Hartwig.
Surviving is one son, Steven R. of Chicago.
He was a laborer at WABCO in Peoria for 35 1/2 years, retiring in 1976.
A World War II Army veteran, he was a member of American Legion Post 718 in Pekin.
He was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church in Bartonville, where memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday. The Rev. Kenneth
Tegtmeier will officiate. There will be no visitation. Cremation has been accorded and interment of ashes will follow the services at St. John
Lutheran Cemetery in Bartonville. Wilton Mortuary in Peoria is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials may be made to Hallmark House Nursing Center.

He was a truck driver for Lauterbach Lumber Co., retiring in 1969.
He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, where services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday. The Rev. Steven Tibbetts will officiate. Visitation will
be from 6 to 8 tonight at Davison-Fulton Western Chapel and 30 minutes before services at the church. Burial will be in Lutheran Cemetery
in Peoria.
Memorials may be made to his church or the Lutheran Home.
