Funeral services were held Wednesday, May 9, 2001, at Henkenius-Priester Funeral Home for Lester C. "Bud" Westphal, 78, who died May 5 at Davis County Hospital in Bloomfield. The Rev. Paul Meseke officiated. Interment was in Sunnyside Cemetery at Milton.
Lester Carl "Bud" Westphal was born June 14, 1922, in Paullina, the son of Carl E. P. and Ella Dora M. (Strahmann) Westphal. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army.
He married Evelyn Edith Hartwig on October 13, 1954, in St. John's Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls, S. Dak. He was self-employed in Rapid City, S. Dak., and had farmed and worked in construction before retiring and moving to Milton in 1985. Evelyn died September 4, 1990.
Survivors include two daughters: Carmen Marie and her husband, Pete Pease of Parkersburg, W. Va., and Shelley and her husband, David Hoff of Cannon Lake, Texas; two grandchildren: Julie Ann Pease and Chris Davis; two great-grandchildren: Cortney and Cameron Davis; a sister, Viola Hoppe of Primghar; and best friend, Wilma Kerby of Milton.

June Mae Hartwig was born on July 24, 1936 in Sibley, Iowa. She was the daughter of Harry and Irene (Wietzema) Willemssen. She lived her youth in rural Sibley, where she attended a country school. When she was young she liked to trick ride on her horse.
She married Emmett Hartwig of Ocheyedan, Iowa in February of 1952. They lived and farmed by Ocheyedan. They went to Las Vegas a couple of times and enjoyed dancing in Sioux Valley at the Coliseum. In 1983, they divorced.
June purchased the bowling alley in Melvin.
She enjoyed going to flea markets with her special friend, Maynard Hanson. She also liked to watch people, visit with her friends, play slot machines and scratch tickets.
June thought the world of her family and grandchildren. She enjoyed playing Yahtzee, cards and Slap Jack with her grandchildren. She liked to cook and teach her kids to cook. Her favorite was fried chicken. She always had time for coffee and visiting.
She passed away on Tuesday, July 15, 2014 at her home in Melvin.
Those left to cherish her memories are her children: Judy Wolterstorff of Melvin, IA and special friend, Paul Wimmer, and her son, Joshua Wolterstorff and his son, Izik; Peggy and Llyn Sorensen of Melvin, IA and their children, Jennifer and Adam Douma and their children, Abigail, Caden, and Brady of Ashton, IA, Lucas Sorensen of Cedar Falls, IA, Brittany and Brandon Elgersma of Sanborn, IA; Dan and Kelly Hartwig of Ocheyedan, IA and their children, Amie and Steve Elser of Ocheyedan, IA and their children, Keytin and Kyler, Rachael Votrobeck and special friend, Jeff Smith, and her children, Aubrey and Cooper of Hartley, IA, Caleb Hartwig; Connie Riedemann of Ritter, IA and her son, Niel Riedemann of Des Moines, IA; Sherry Hartwig of Spirit Lake, IA.
She was preceded in death by her son, Jerry Hartwig; her parents; one brother and sister-in-law, Clifford and Ruth Willemssen.

BRILLION — Vera W. Shafer, 94, died Oct. 1, 2006, at her home in Brillion.
Vera, a resident of Portage for many years, was born Sept. 13, 1912, in the township of Lowville on a farm near Poynette. The youngest daughter of William L. and Grace (Utter) Woodward, she married Charles L. Shafer in 1933. Vera attended a one-room country schoolhouse through eighth grade and graduated from Poynette High School. She was employed by WIBU for three years, Kroger's for 16 years, A&P for 19 years, Divine Savior Hospital for 15 years and Jefferson Home Health for three years. At age 76, she retired to Brillion to be near her daughter. Vera was a life-long member of the Methodist Church but worshiped with her daughter at Ebenezer United Church of Christ in Chilton after relocation. She was a long-time member of the Royal Neighbors of America. She enjoyed dogs and other animals, crocheting, flowers, gardening, music and bird watching. Vera maintained a long list of people for whom she prayed each day.
Vera is survived by two daughters, Charlaine (Charles) Parsons, Hilbert and Celeste (Thomas) Kendall, Evanston, Ill; four grandchildren, Scott Parsons, Appleton, Sheri Giese, New Holstein, Darrell Parsons, Brillion, and William Kendall, Evanston, Ill; two great-granddaughters, Cassondra and Alexandra Parsons of Brillion; numerous nieces and nephews; and two friends, David Giese and Jane Kopidlansky, both of Brillion.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two sisters, Almeda Wilson and Hildred Green; and a brother, J. Richard Woodward.
Funeral services will be held at 5 p.m. on Saturday at the Poynette Methodist Church, with Pastor Kathleen Gloff of Chilton officiating.
Visitation will be held at 3 p.m. until the time of service on Saturday at the church. Burial will follow at the Hillside Cemetery in Poynette. The Pflanz Mantey Mendrala Funeral Home in Poynette is assisting the family.

Emily was born December 14, 1917 at the family farm near Barneston, Nebraska, to Henry and Mona (Hartwig) Zimmerman. She married Andrew B. Saathoff on January 31, 1939.
Emily and Andrew had 3 children, Arlyn (Ruth) Saathoff – Gig Harbor, Washington; Melvadeen (Bob) Neely – Sioux Falls, South Dakota; and Ken (Barbara) Saathoff – Overland Park, Kansas. Emily was also very proud of her 7 grandchildren; Tom, Jeff, Bob, Danny, Abbey, Greg Neely and Lisa Neely-Smith; and her 12 great grandchildren.
For 40 years, Emily and Andrew were active members of the State Line Lutheran Church south of Wymore. Later, they joined St. John’s Lutheran Church in Beatrice. Emily looked forward to spending time with friends, and she never missed an opportunity to play cards. She enjoyed quilting, and she loved sports. She seemed to know how to grow, can or cook anything, and enjoyed indulging her family with their individual favorites. They will miss her unconditional love and encouragement.
Besides her own family, Emily was very close to her brother, Arnold Zimmerman, and his wife, Lorene, and her other sister-in-law, Lula Saathoff, who all live in Beatrice.
In lieu of flowers, Memorials to Mosaic (formerly the Martin Luther Home) may be sent to Griffiths-Hovendick Chapel, 708 N. 6th Street in Beatrice, Nebraska 68310.
A private burial will be held at the Evergreen Home Cemetery.
Visitation will be Wednesday, November 11th from 11 AM to 9 PM at Griffiths-Hovendick Chapel in Beatrice.
A memorial service for Emily will be held Thursday, November 12th at 11:00 am at St. John’s Lutheran Church at 701 N. 6th Street in Beatrice.
