They are listed below as one and two, but the true order is unknown, as one letter has no date. The importance of these letters is primarily that it shows that Peder has moved from Haarby Denmark to North Slesvig, Germany. Note: in 1911 North Slevig was part of Germany. After World War I, after a vote of the people, it was returned to Denmark.

Letter One:
Dear Brother and Sister in Law,

We are all well and we hope that you are too, dear Brother. You wrote that you might be able to send us a little money this winter, how about it, couldn't you do that, as I need a lot of money for new year and I do not know from where to get it as everything is so expensive. Can you imagine the cow alone cost four hundred Mark now and I would like to keep it because I have enough fodder ... if only I can, dear Brother, for I have bought it on ... and will probably do it again when I can. And now a friendly greeting from us all, dear Brother, also greet your wife from us and live well.

Letter Two, written February 22nd, 1911
Dear Brother and Sister in Law,

I will now congratualte you on the occasion of your birthday, dear Brother, and hope you may live well in the new year, so we all wish you. I have long waited to hear from you, but we have now waited long in vain, you might write to say how you are and how ... or is, for I must adjust according to that, dear Brother. How is you winter, here we have hardly had nay winter yet, and hardly any snow, but lots of rain and wind this winter and that is very unhealthy - it is a long time since we have had any snow in the winter, for probably that is also the reason that no longer have warm summers. Now I have no more news.

And now a kind greeting from us all, you brother and family of Coter (?).

Residence22 September 1936Lillian Mortensen lived at Stevens (now North Sioux City), Union Co, SD, on 22 September 1936.
Notefrom June 1937 to September 1940She and Howard Taft Cash lived in Stevens, SD with Rasmus Mortensen from June 1937 to April 1938. During this time he harvested grain during Jul and Aug of 1937 for C G Dralle in Seward, Kansas ($4/day); from August 1 to Oct 10 of 1937 he worked for Victor Johnson in Ortonville, MN ($16.75/wk). He quit this job and returned to Stevens because his wife had become sick. From April 1, 1938 to Feb 1940 they lived in an old garage belonging to Pete and Marie Lynott at 902 Rock St., Sioux City, IA. To earn money, he raised chickens, raised and sold vegetables from their garden; she returned to work at Baker's. From 13 Sep 1939 to 5 Sep 1940 he worked for the WPA in Sioux City, IA as a laborer ($52/mo). From Feb 1940 to Sep 1940 they lived in a house at 2128 Dewey St, Sioux City, IA, which they bought for $400 (borrowed $350 against his life insurance policy).

Residence*26 January 1942Lillian Mortensen and Howard Taft Cash lived at 3370 Silver Lake Blvd, Los Angeles, Los Angeles Co, CA, on 26 January 1942.
Proof-Notes*26 January 1942Lillian Mortensen and Howard Taft Cash are the parents of Ted Cash because of the following reason(s): Birth records in Los Angeles, CA and personal knowledge of the author, Ted Cash.
ResidenceMay 1942Lillian Mortensen and Howard Taft Cash lived at 2645 Allesandro St, Los Angeles, Los Angeles Co, CA, in May 1942.
Notefrom June 1945 to April 1952In Jun 1945, with WWII nearly over, they decided to move back to Iowa and go farming. They stayed with Pete and Marie Lynott in Sioux City for a few months. In Nov 1945 they moved in with Earl and Vera Mortensen on their farm near Anthon, IA. On 3 Dec 1945 they bought a farm and applied for a loan from the Federal Land Bank. The farm was 120 acres located in Section 25 of Kedron Twsp, Woodbury Co, IA. On 1 Mar 1946 they moved to that farm and stayed there until 1 Mar 1952. They sold the farm, sold most of their belonging at a farm auction, packed their remaining belonging into a trailer which they towed behind them to Los Angeles. (He drove the entire distance himself, with only a few hours rest, arriving 2 or 3 days later -- this was before interstates.) After arriving in LA, they stayed with his sister and family, May and Elmer Brown at 2400 Elm Grove St, Los Angeles, CA, then they found a rental house and moved to 2949 Partridge, Los Angeles, CA for about three weeks. During this time he worked for Lockheed Aircraft, again as a riveter. Too many changes had happened in California since 1945 and they were not happy there, so they packed up their belonging in a trailer and moved back to Iowa, again driving non-stop. They arrived back in Sioux City exactly 5 weeks after they had left, and only hours before the bridge into Sioux City from Nebraska was closed because of flooding. (I remember arriving late at night, and seeing nothing but water on both sides of the road when lightning would flash).
Note*from April 1952 to March 1960Lillian Mortensen and Howard Taft Cash lived briefly with Pete & Marie Lynott, and then moved to a second story apartment at 1922 W 5th St, Sioux City, IA. During this period, he worked for Swift & Co as a laborer, and she worked for Aalfs-Baker Mfg Co, 1007 Fourth St, Sioux City as a seamstress. On 17 Feb 1953 they purchased their 2nd farm (120 acres) located in Sections 6 & 7, Grant Twsp, Woodbury Co, IA (between Anthon and Climbing Hill, IA). They lived on this farm until 1 Mar 1960. During bad crop years, he worked for Swift & Co, and she worked for Hovland Mfg Co, both in Sioux City to supplement their income.
Photo*before 1955Lillian Mortensen appeared in a photo before 1955 at Sioux City, Woodbury Co, IA.
Notefrom March 1960 to March 1963She and Howard Taft Cash moved to Sioux City and lived at 133 So. Fawcett Street until March 1963. He worked for the city of Sioux City in the Street Maintenance Department during their stay. On 8 Sep 1962 they bought a farm near Miller, MO.

Photocirca 1962Lillian Mortensen and Howard Taft Cash appeared in a photo circa 1962 at Sioux City, Woodbury Co, IA.
Notefrom March 1963 to March 1967Lillian Mortensen and Howard Taft Cash moved to the farm near Miller, MO, but did not farm it. It was located on the famous "Route 66", but traffic soon disappeared when Interstate 44 was completed. On 3 Nov 1966 they sold the farm, and on 14 Nov 1966 they purchased a house at 620 N. West Ave, Springfield, MO.
Notefrom March 1970 to 1980Lillian Mortensen sold the house at 620 N West Ave in Springfield, MO on 17 Mar 1970 and moved to Colorado Springs, CO where she purchased a mobile home and lived at 3524 N Cascade. She sold it and on 17 Oct 1972 purchased a house at 1220 S Ferguson, Springfield, MO where she lived until 14 Aug 1975. She then moved back to Colorado Springs, CO and purchased another mobile home and lived again at 3524 N Cascade. By 1980 she had moved to 1025 Garner #15A, Colorado Springs, CO.
NoteShe was a great cook and a good mother. She didn't make exotic foods, but whatever she did make was very good, and there was always plenty of it. (Okay, so I didn't like the beets or the cranberries, but some people seemed to think they were good, too -- beside, I made up for that by eating desserts). Desserts were her specialties; pies, cakes, cookies -- yummy. As a mother, she always encouraged her sons to do the right thing, and always told them "when" (not "if") you go to college. There was never a doubt in our minds as to whether or not we were to go to college. College was not free, as we had to work to pay the expenses, but she went back to work so she could "loan" us some of the money we needed. She made some of our clothes, especially shirts; and cut our hair on a regular basis. I never had a barber cut my hair until I went to college.
