Memo* Data from Sherry Cornelius: Apr 2001
Jesse Merritt, born February 20, 1767 at Peekskill married in 1789 Mary Cornelius, daughter of John Cornelius and Mary Powell Cornelius, Jesse died March 30, 1843, and Mary Cornelius Merritt died November 7th, 1840. Later in the record it shows Jesse’s birth date as February 20th, 1769 who was with his father on Long Island in 1781, so there is somewhat of a discrepancy for the date of birth on Jesse.

Jesse Merritt requested and became a member of Jericho Monthly Meeting of Friends in 1788. He was married by Friends ceremony the 6th of May 1789 at Bethpage, to Mary Cornelius, daughter of John and Mary Powell Cornelius. A warm friend of Elias Hicks went with him as companion on his very trying journey through the far West in 1828. They traveled with their own conveyance over mountains and through wildernesses in Pennsylvania, Ohio and Indiana, taking 6 months for the trip. They held and attended many meetings and his account of the Mary Cornelius, daughter of John and Mary Cornelius of Oysterbay in the County and State aforesaid, having declared their intentions of marriage with each other before two several monthly meetings of the People called Quakers at Westbury, according to the good order used among them, and having consent of parents and nothing appearing to obstruct, was approved by said meeting.

Now these are to certify all whom it may concern, that for the full accomplishment of their said intentions this 6th day of the 5th month 1789. They, the said Jesse Merritt and Mary Cornelius appeared in a Public Meeting of said People and others at Bethpage, and the said Jesse Merritt, taking the said Mary Cornelius by the hand did in a solemn manner openly declare that he took her to be his wife promising by Divine assistance to be unto her a true and loving husband until death should separate them. And then in the said Assembly, the said Mary Cornelius did in like manner declare that she took the said Jesse Merritt to be her husband promising by Divine assistance to be unto him a true and loving wife until death should separate them. And, moreover, the said Jesse Merritt and Mary Cornelius, she according to the custom of marriage, assuming the name of her husband, as a further confirmation thereof, did then and there, to these presents set their hands.

Jesse Merritt

Mary Merritt

And we whose names are hereunto subscribed being present at the solemnization of said marriage and subscription, have as witnesses, set our hands the day and year above written.

Data from History of the Cornelius Family in America - by Charles S. Cornelius - 1 Jan 1926
Pg 10 - chapter 10 - Vol 1.

Jesse Merritt was one of the largest land owners on Long Island, NY, and the family still hold most of the original tract of 2000 acres, the deed of which was given him by the Indians and which is still in the possession of Mrs. John C. Marriett Jr..

Jesse Merritt built the house known as 'The Merritt Place'. The house stands on the east side of the road about two miles northeast of Farmingdale , and about four miles north of Massapequa and the Minell Place, or the old 'Cornelius Homestead'.

It is a large square gabled house, two and a half stories high and surrounded by a grove of fine maples and directly in front is a immense Black Walnut and said to have been planted about 1800.

To the north of the house is a lily pond about 30 feet across and formed by springs and filled wit beautiful white water lilies.

To the North of this is a large field of about 20 acres, sloping to the east. This is sandy lome planted to gladiolas and dehlias, and the view one gets of this immense garden in passing is a sight to be remembered. The present owner of the place, Mrs. John Merritt, Jr. and her son care for the place and the garden. (1924)
