BRILLION — Vera W. Shafer, 94, died Oct. 1, 2006, at her home in Brillion.
Vera, a resident of Portage for many years, was born Sept. 13, 1912, in the township of Lowville on a farm near Poynette. The youngest daughter of William L. and Grace (Utter) Woodward, she married Charles L. Shafer in 1933. Vera attended a one-room country schoolhouse through eighth grade and graduated from Poynette High School. She was employed by WIBU for three years, Kroger's for 16 years, A&P for 19 years, Divine Savior Hospital for 15 years and Jefferson Home Health for three years. At age 76, she retired to Brillion to be near her daughter. Vera was a life-long member of the Methodist Church but worshiped with her daughter at Ebenezer United Church of Christ in Chilton after relocation. She was a long-time member of the Royal Neighbors of America. She enjoyed dogs and other animals, crocheting, flowers, gardening, music and bird watching. Vera maintained a long list of people for whom she prayed each day.
Vera is survived by two daughters, Charlaine (Charles) Parsons, Hilbert and Celeste (Thomas) Kendall, Evanston, Ill; four grandchildren, Scott Parsons, Appleton, Sheri Giese, New Holstein, Darrell Parsons, Brillion, and William Kendall, Evanston, Ill; two great-granddaughters, Cassondra and Alexandra Parsons of Brillion; numerous nieces and nephews; and two friends, David Giese and Jane Kopidlansky, both of Brillion.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two sisters, Almeda Wilson and Hildred Green; and a brother, J. Richard Woodward.
Funeral services will be held at 5 p.m. on Saturday at the Poynette Methodist Church, with Pastor Kathleen Gloff of Chilton officiating.
Visitation will be held at 3 p.m. until the time of service on Saturday at the church. Burial will follow at the Hillside Cemetery in Poynette. The Pflanz Mantey Mendrala Funeral Home in Poynette is assisting the family. |

She and her husband, Andrew, farmed near Oketo, Kansas until 1980 when they retired and moved to Beatrice, Nebraska. Andrew died on August 19, 1996. Emily was also preceded in death by her two sisters, Lula Woodward and Alma Foreman, and by her brother, Leslie.
Emily was born December 14, 1917 at the family farm near Barneston, Nebraska, to Henry and Mona (Hartwig) Zimmerman. She married Andrew B. Saathoff on January 31, 1939.
Emily and Andrew had 3 children, Arlyn (Ruth) Saathoff – Gig Harbor, Washington; Melvadeen (Bob) Neely – Sioux Falls, South Dakota; and Ken (Barbara) Saathoff – Overland Park, Kansas. Emily was also very proud of her 7 grandchildren; Tom, Jeff, Bob, Danny, Abbey, Greg Neely and Lisa Neely-Smith; and her 12 great grandchildren.
For 40 years, Emily and Andrew were active members of the State Line Lutheran Church south of Wymore. Later, they joined St. John’s Lutheran Church in Beatrice. Emily looked forward to spending time with friends, and she never missed an opportunity to play cards. She enjoyed quilting, and she loved sports. She seemed to know how to grow, can or cook anything, and enjoyed indulging her family with their individual favorites. They will miss her unconditional love and encouragement.
Besides her own family, Emily was very close to her brother, Arnold Zimmerman, and his wife, Lorene, and her other sister-in-law, Lula Saathoff, who all live in Beatrice.
Memorial:
In lieu of flowers, Memorials to Mosaic (formerly the Martin Luther Home) may be sent to Griffiths-Hovendick Chapel, 708 N. 6th Street in Beatrice, Nebraska 68310.
Cemetery:
A private burial will be held at the Evergreen Home Cemetery.
Visitations:
Visitation will be Wednesday, November 11th from 11 AM to 9 PM at Griffiths-Hovendick Chapel in Beatrice.
Services:
A memorial service for Emily will be held Thursday, November 12th at 11:00 am at St. John’s Lutheran Church at 701 N. 6th Street in Beatrice. |
