Bernie Victor Sondergard

Bernie Victor Sondergard, age 80, of Watertown and formerly of New Germany, died Friday, July 26, 2002, at the Ridgeview Medical Center, Waconia.

He was born January 15, 1922 to Nels and Alma (Fiene) Sondergard in Freeborn County, Minn. Bernie attended Freeborn High School, and graduated in 1939.

He and his brother enlisted in the service the day after Pearl Harbor was attacked. He served as a sergeant in the US Marine Corps, seeing all of his duty in the South Pacific, from 1942 to 1945. He was in the first battle of Guadal Canal. He was a member of the American Legion and the VFW.

Bernie was a very active man, and owned and operated Frontier Electric, was a charter member of the Carver County Mounted Posse, was a charter member of the Tri-County Riders of Watertown, served as head of Carver County

4-H horse program, and was on the Carver County Fair Board.

In addition, he was a 20-year active member of the Western Saddle Club Association, serving as judge and past president. Bernie placed third in the American Quarter Horse Reining competition in 1983 at the Quarter Horse Congress.

Bernie saw a need for equestrian training for children, and formed a 4-H saddle club to fill that need. He was a dealer of Jackson Horse Trailers, donating both his time and two trailers to the Minnesota High School Rodeo Association.

Horses were a big part of Bernie's life, and he and one of his sons participated in a mock robbery on horseback of the Winsted Bank, which was part of the Winsted Centennial.

Bernie was preceded in death by his parents, Nels and Alma Sondergard, and one brother.

He is survived by five sons, Michael and Susan, Jerry and Peggy, Jack and Lisa, Scott and Deb, and Steve and Ann; 13 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Marilyn and Fred Phillips and Wilma Zoller.

Memorial services were Tuesday, July 30, at the Iten Funeral Home in Delano. Gathering time took place prior to the service, with the Rev. James Beard officiating.

Music was provided by Karen Otto as organist.

Arrangements were made by the Iten Funeral Home in Delano.3

Funeral services for Marilyn J. Phillips of New Richland will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church. The Rev. Philip Lewison will officiate. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5 until 8 p.m. at Friedrich Funeral Home, New Richland, and one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, New Richland.
Mrs. Phillips died Sunday morning at St Marys Hospital in Rochester. She was 84 years old.
Marilyn was born Sept. 2, 1923, in Freeborn County, the daughter of Nels and Alma (Finie) Sondergard. She graduated from Freeborn high school in 1941 and received normal teachers training in Wells. Marilyn taught public school in Freeborn County for 10 years.
On Sept. 16, 1945, she was united in marriage to Fred Phillips at All Saints Catholic Church in New Richland. She lived much of her life in Hartland and the past 18 years in New Richland.
Marilyn was a member of St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church, the American Legion Auxiliary for 52 years, president of the Hartland Auxiliary for 21 years, and 1st District president from 1986 to 1987. She was a very dedicated and enthusiastic promoter of Girls State. In her free time, Marilyn enjoyed crafts but her real love was her grandchildren. She could always be found at their activities including sports and dance.
Marilyn is survived by her husband, Fred, of New Richland; children: Dale and his wife Valerie of Hartland, Neil and his wife Julie of Hartland, Lori and her husband Michael Frafjord of Rosemont and Dann and his wife Joanne of Hartland. Grandchildren include: Amy (Chris) Beausoleil, Aaron (Jeanette) Phillips, Anne Phillips, Dr. Alison (Chris) Sorensen, Matthew Phillips, Lucas, Thomas and Peter Frafjord, Abby and Kacie Phillips. Great -grandchildren are: Madeline, Morgan and Andrew Phillips, Alex and Emma Beausoleil. One sister, Wilma Zoller of Albert Lea, survives.
Marilyn was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Bernard and Luverne Sondergard; and one granddaughter, Catherine Frafjord.
She will be greatly missed by her loving family and many friends.3
