Schmitz, 78, of Cedar Rapids died Monday, July 21, 2008, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha. Born Oct. 1, 1929, in Burlington he was the son of Paul and Ella Duff Schmitz. In 1951, he married Delores Jean Gilchrist. She died. In 1972, he married Janis Fink Klingman. Mr. Schmitz worked as a manager for Firestone Tire and Rubber Co. in downtown Cedar Rapids and at Lindale Plaza for 31 years. He graduated from Burlington High School. He served in the Army. He was a member of Elks Club, Exchange Club and Concordia Lutheran Church. He enjoyed the Iowa Hawkeyes, St. Louis Cardinals, softball, bowling, golf and dancing. Survivors include his wife; five sons, Brian of Orlando, Fla., Roger, Alan and Doug, all of Cedar Rapids, and Christopher of New Smyrna Beach, Fla.; one daughter, Julie Schmitz of Pittsburgh, Pa.; one stepdaughter, Kayla Kilngman of Portland, Ore.; four grandchildren; two brothers, Howard "Sonny" Schmitz of Burlington and Dick Schmitz of Stronghurst, Ill.; and two sisters, Carol Sprock of Stronghurst and Shirley Mundt of Burlington. Besides his first wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and one brother. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Teahen Funeral Home in Cedar Rapids and from 9 to 10 a.m. Thursday at Concordia Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids. The funeral for Mr. Schmitz will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Concordia Lutheran Church with the Revs. Jerry Doellinger and Paul Scheidt officiating. Burial will be at 3 p.m. in Memorial Park Cemetery in Burlington. A reception will follow at Bethany Lutheran Church in Burlington. Memorials have been established for the American Stroke Association at 1035 N. Center Point Road, Hiawatha, the Pipe Organ Fund at Concordia Lutheran Church or the Dennis and Donna Hospice House of Mercy.2 |
