He became one of 5 "dual-rated" pilot-MD's in the Air Force. He was appointed Chief of Flight Medicine at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base in North Carolina.
He received the Air Force Meritorious Service Medal, the Commendation Medal, the Achievement Medal, and was a Top Gun and Honors Graduate of F-15 RTU Class in May 1982.
His professional memberships included Associate Fellow of the Aerospace Medical Association, Tactical Air Command F-15 weapons system flight surgeon, Diplomate, National Board of Medical Examiners, American Medical Association, American Academy of Family Physicians, Aerospace Medical Association, Society of US Air Force Flight Surgeons, and he was a charter member of International Association of Military Flight Surgeon Pilots.
He died in a bombing mission over Basra during the Gulf War. He was awarded the Purple Heart and Distinguished Flying Medal posthumously.1

Evelyn Barnhart -- Gilman

Evelyn Amanda Barnhart, 91, of Gilman, died Saturday (July 2, 2005) at Prairieview Lutheran Home, Danforth, after an extended illness. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. today at the Redenius Funeral Home, Gilman, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday. Rev. Robert Downs will officiate.

Burial will be in Ridgeland Township Cemetery, Thawville. Memorials may be made to Prairieview Lutheran Home, Danforth; St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Gilman; or to the donor's choice.

Mrs. Barnhart had worked as a secretary for attorney Fred Raney Miller in Gilman. She had also worked at the Condenser Factory in Watseka, retiring in 1978. She was born July 27, 1913, in Thawville, the daughter of Amos and Hulda Gerth Koritz. Her husband, George Maurice Barnhart, whom she married Oct. 20, 1932, in Clayton, Mo., died April 24, 1984. She attended schools in Thawville and Onarga. She was a graduate of Gallagher Business School in Kankakee. She had been a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Gilman since 1970. She enjoyed oil painting, crossword puzzles and being with her family.

Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, James Maurice and Lynn Barnhart of Lawton, Okla.; one daughter and son-in-law, Roberta "Barney" and Robert "General" Harrison of Gilman; two granddaughters, Diane Herscher of Kankakee, Janette Harrison of Gilman; six great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Naomi Bossong of Watseka; one brother-in-law, Arlo Barnhart of Woodland; and special friend, Millie Schunke of Gilman.

Deceased are two brothers, Lloyd and Alvin Koritz; one sister, Wilma Martin; and one grandson, Mike Harrison.2
