Elias Cornelius (1758-1823), served as surgeon's mate in the Rhode Island line. He was in many battles, captured in 1777; confined in New York where he suffered great privations and in 1781 was honorably discharged due to ill health. He was a charter member of the Cincinnati of Rhode Island and among their treasures is his journal written during his imprisonment. He died in Somers, New York.

(There could possibly be a connection to the Mary Cornelius Little who married Joseph Lincoln Colby, daughter of George B. Little).

The Rev. Elias Cornelius, D.D. entered the Sophomore Class of Yale College at age 16, (Sept 1810). He was one of the youngest and on of the most brilliant Scholars of that noted College from which he graduated with honors in 1813.

In 1826 he was called to the office of Sec. of rthe American Educational Society, and in Jan 1832 he was chosen successor rto Jerrard Everarts as Commisioner of Foreign Missions.

A very complete memoir of his life was published by B. B. Edwards (Perkins Marion & Co.) in 1831, a copy of which is in possession of the writer of this record and which later will be placed in the Congressional Library in Washington DC.1
