Resident of Belmont, CA

Dale George Kuhns, son of Herman Richard Kuhns and Ruth Otterbein, was born on July 15, 1936 in Ocheyedan Iowa. He grew up in a small farming town and was especially enamored with the nearby airport. This began his early interest in flying. He attended Miller Vocational High School in Minneapolis where he worked on his A&E license. After graduation he enlisted in the US Marine Corps Air Division and served for four years. After the USMC he was hired as a mechanic at United Airlines and moved to the San Francisco Bay Area.

Dale was the first fixed wing pilot to fly traffic patrol in the Bay Area with the likes of Lou "Ace" Hurley and Hap Harper. He was the only person to taxi an aircraft from Crissy Field in San Francisco down Van Ness Ave to the Civic Auditorium. He displayed his Cessna line at the Cow Palace, landing in the parking lot. Before today's myriad of regulations that exist, he taxied a C-150 down Holly Street, across El Camino Real, to the American Legion parking lot in San Carlos, CA to promote a membership drive for the San Carlos Chamber of Commerce.

Dale helped set up the first Air Transportation class offered at Ravenswood and Menlo Atherton High Schools. Early in his flying career he also began teaching ground school courses at the College of San Mateo. He retired from teaching after 40 years.

Dale lost his battle with lung cancer and passed August 1, 2012. He is survived by his son Glen Kuhns, daughter-in-law Jennifer Kuhns, two grandsons Benjamin and William, his daughter Tina Kuhns, his stepdaughter Sarah Watkins, and his companion Barbara Krupocki. A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, August 12th from 2-4pm at The Lodge at Twin Pines Park.2

MARJORIE CLAUS, 83, of Ocheyedan, died Thursday, Sept. 21, 2006, at her home.

Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at St. Peter?s Lutheran Church, Ocheyedan.

The service will be 11 a.m. Friday at St. Peter?s Lutheran Church, Ocheyedan, with the Rev. Russell Anderson officiating. A private graveside service will precede the church service.

Andringa Funeral Home, Sibley and Ocheyedan, is in charge of arrangements.5
