Memo	1972	Memo: One great-granddaughter remembers her as always smelling like sugar, butter and flour, covered in a big white apron, and her arms and floors dusted in flour --- baking, baking, baking. Visiting them was additionally made fun by the hours spent climbing up and sliding down the wonderful tube fire escape at the nearby grade school. In her reminiscences, Mary Jean Koritz Greenwood wrote: "Now this I was told as an explanation of why after a certain point, I was no longer welcome at the Gerth family reunions held mid-summer at Lake Bloomington, Illinois. All my second cousins were nicely rounded, blonde, blue-eyed, praised for their docility and prettiness. A pair of twins especially incensed me, so I shoved one of them deliberately into Lake Bloomington. It did not occur to me that a little farm-bred girl could not swim. Thankfully the child was fished out and I was hauled away ignominiously and never invited again." Mary Jean kept a special warm place in her heart for her great-aunt Gerth, a sister of her grandmother, Hulda. Mary Jean Koritz Greenwood requested that her ashes and urn be placed in the Thawville family cemetery beside her great-aunt Gerth's stone, between the two yew trees. From the memories of Wilma Koritz Bernard: Being the oldest daughter of the thirteen Gerth children, Hulda Gerth was the chief assistant for her mother, helping with the younger brothers and sisters...she could do anything and everything . . . and she did! As a farmer's wife, she worked very, very hard, but accepted her role as part of her life...she spent many hours each day preparing three great meals for her family, the hired help, Grandfather Koritz, and Uncle Carl...She baked almost everything...We would run the last quarter mile for the hot bread (home ground flour and meal), cakes, ...We canned everything from the garden: fruit, berries, meat, etc. Her hands were always busy mending, sewing, embroidering, and quilting. With all of her other work, she always took time for church (Lutheran)...our school activities, and dancing. Many times the living room rug was rolled up and friends would spend the evening at our house for a fun time. Mom "chorded" on the piano and someone would always bring a fiddle. Dad was the "caller" for the square dancing. And as I recall, we always attended the Saturday night dances in Onarga. With a twinkle in her eye, she would often tell about Dad courting her. He had a horse and buggy, and she said that it wasn't any different in those days- you could still find a nice quiet place to park. In the summers, she would often take us for a walk in the evening, maybe west toward the setting sun, or to a place where we could gaze at the sky and study the patterns in the clouds. We would let our imaginations run wild, and "see" the forms of animals and lots of other things in the sky during those beautiful walks. Or sometimes she'd pack a snack and we'd go to a grove of trees near the house and have our own private little picnic. Discipline wasn't too big a problem for Mom. Occasionally Dad's razor strap was put into action to stop some petty bickering or fight, but always the punishment was doled out to both offenders. We had our own chores and school home work to do. Mom checked our spelling, and Dad helped us with our arithmetic...She made Sis and me practice our music lessons: Sis on a violin, and piano for me. Her theory on child raising was that at the age of eighteen you were on your own. She figured that by that time we knew right from wrong, what we wanted to do, and work wouldn't hurt us to accomplish the same. Nevertheless, Mom and Dad were always ready to help. She believed in "live and let live," and was never critical of friends or family. She had many friends . . . and the coffee pot was always ready when someone would drop in for a chat.¹

He married Alice Ihlow on November 20, 1941, in Trintiy Lutheran Church in Faribault. Prior to his retirement he worked for the former Nuttuing Truck and Castor Company. Survivors include his wife Alice; three sons, Harland of Carol Streams, Ill., Bernard of Rochester and Luverne of Humolt, IA; four daughters, Mrs. Donald Malter (Dorothy) of Kenner , LA, Marie of Houstan ,Texas, Mrs. Larry (Janet) Gieseke of Arlington, MN and Mrs. Donald Ackman of Faribault, MN; nine grandchildren; one great-grand-daughter; one brother, Berthold of Lodi, CA; two sisters, Martha and Mrs. Karl (Hilda) Brietmeyer, both of Lodi, CA. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Phyllis in 1953; four brothers, August, Otto, William and Paul; and three sisters, Minnie Janke, Ida Spitzack and Hertha Witter.¹
