| Memo (fam) | (1991) | Memo: [From The Ocheyedan Centennial Book, 1891-1991] The Leckband family, Detlef and Louisa Wilhelmina Wohlenberg and their children Theodore, Emil, Wilhelm, Margaret and Chris, left Eckernfarte, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, on May 1, 1875 sailing from Hamburg. They first came to Lyons, Iowa, now part of Clinton. They farmed in this area, renting from an uncle. From Lyons they moved to Walnut, Iowa, renting 480 acres. In 1887 they bought about 640 acres of prairie near Hull at $10 per acre. They built two sets of buildings. Emil married Miss Wohlenberg. Three sons were born to them. Emil's wife and sons died during the diphtheria epidemic in 1891. He married Wallie Goetenfelder, and they had nine children. They lived in Adair and in the Truro-Gardener area before moving to Ocheyedan in 1920. Margaret married Rev. John Hesse, a traveling missionary with the Lutheran Church in northwest Iowa. They had nine children. Rev and Mrs Hesse started the Lutheran Orphanage in Fort Dodge, Iowa. Chris married Amelia Berchard of Paulina, Iowa. They had two sons and one daughter. William Leckband married Wilhelmina Glade, daughter of Fred and Dorothea Glade of Ocheyedan. She had come to work in the Detlef Leckband household. William proposed to her by slipping a note under her door. Emma Leckband was born in 1887, and died in 1902, from pneumonia following the measles. Louis Leckband was born 1890. The family sold the farm near Hull and moved to Adair, where Emil was operating an elevator. William and Chris managed a mercantile business in the structure Emil had built. The "Silver Panic" during the McKinley administration resulted in a recession, and they were forced out of business. Chris moved to Fort Dodge (or Storm Lake), to Austin, Minnesota, then to Dayton, Oregon, in 1907. William and his family moved to West Exira, where he managed an elevator. They moved to the Ocheyedan area in 1903, farming for five years on two different farms. The years 1903 to 1904 were ver wet and cool. They moved to Dayton, Oregon in 1908 to clear timber from land bought by Theodore, the bachelor brother. Theodore was an inventor who worked in various places, mostly Iowa. Later, he married, living at Clinton, Iowa. The William Leckband family moved back to the Ocheyedan area in 1916. They lived on three different farms and retired to Spirit Lake for about two years. When Grandmother Glade died in 1922, they moved into the west part of the Glade homestead and cared for Grandfather Fred Glade, until his death in 1932. They moved to a small house in southeast Ocheyedan. William died in 1939. Minna stayed in the home until she moved in with her daughter Martha, (Mrs Henry) Consoer. Minna died in 1963. Louis married Emma Riebesehl. Their children were Eunice Wulkow, Phyllis Rueter, Stanley and James. Walter married Lydia Scheu. They had five children. Martha married Henry Consoer. Their children were Norbert, deceased at age 11; Lyle, deceased at age 1; Marland, deceased infant; Vernon, deceased infant; Warren, Leslie and Paul. Otto married Clara Schaefer. Their children were Joyce Christianson and Mary Dorr. Erwin married Esther Sitz. Their children were Bernice Ostlund, Arnold and Margaret Ryan. Raymond married Rosa Brott. They had four children. Ernest died at age six. Lorenz died at age fifteen. The Louis Leckband and Martha Consoer families resided in Horton Township. Louis was a director of the Ocheyedan Co-operative Elevator, served in several capacities on the Zion Lutheran Church Council, and was active in Farm Bureau. Rev. Walter Leckband served various pastorates, mostly in eastern Iowa, and retired to California. Otto and Raymond lived in California. Erwin lived in Brainerd, Minnesota. At the time Gregory Leckband, son of James, farms the Riebesehl homestead in Horton township. James farms in Minnesota, just across the state line.4 |

| Memo (fam) | (1991) | Memo: [From the Ocheyedan Centennial Book, 1891-1991] Louis Leckband, son of William and Wilhelminna Glade Leckband, was born at Adair, Iowa, in 1890. His first years were spent there and in the Exira, Iowa area until the family moved to Ocheyedan in 1903, where they farmed. The family then moved to Dayton, Oregon, in 1908, where they cleared land so they could farm it. In 1916, the family moved back to Ocheyedan, where they once again engaged in farming. In 1917, Louis married Emma Riebesehl and began farming in the Ocheyedan area. Emma was born in Webster City in 1893, moving to Horton Township with her family in 1894. Louis and Emma farmed a number of farms until 1927, when they moved to the Riebesehl homestead where they farmed until their retirement in 1955. They then moved to Worthington, Minnesota, and lived there until their deaths, Emma in 1977, and Louis in 1982. They had both resided in Lake Haven Nursing Home. Emma was a very active farm woman who helped milk cows, helped with haying and harvest, shocked grain, raised chickens, ducks and geese, besides having a large vegetable garden, raspberry and strawberry beds, plus apple and plum orchards. She was an excellent cook and horsewoman. At the age of nine, her father sent her out to plow with the sulky and a three horse hitch. Louis and Emma's first years of farming were very difficult because of cool, wet years with severe winters. After moving to the Riebesehl half section, they hired a man, and raised hogs and dairy cattle, and later fed cattle. They were progressive farmers, following information from Iowa State about crop rotation and balanced feed formulas, using their own grain. They were among the early farmers in the area who planted soybeans. Other crops were corn, oats, barley, alfalfa and clover. Louis was a dedicated fisherman and later a game hunter. His trophies included moose, deer, bear, antelope, elk and caribou. His cousin, Alfred Hattendorf was often his fishing and hunting companion. As a grandfather he enjoyed taking his grandsons camping on fishing trips with them. He truly loved the outdoors and all of nature. Louis took an active part in the community, serving on the Co-op Elevator board, as a township officer, and also in Farm Bureau. He held offices in the Zion Lutheran Church in Horton Township, of which he and his family were all members. To this union were born four children. Eunice married Reinard Wulkow and lives at Sac City, Iowa. Phyllis married Marcus Rueter (deceased). Phyllis lives at Ocheyedan. Stanley married Vivian Oleson and lives at Dewey, Arizona. James married Maureen Rehborg and lives at Worthington, Minnesota.3 |
