Elizabeth Neitz Obituary

Obituary of Elizabeth Helen (Neal) Neitz
Elizabeth Helen (Neal) Neitz, 81, died on Friday, February 9, 2024, at her home in West Melbourne, FL, following a short and intense fight against cancer. Her husband, sons and brother were with her during her final days
Elizabeth and Don Neitz observed their 60 wedding anniversary on February 8, with a small party at her bedside.
She was born on March 1, 1942, to Helen Frances Smith Neal and Robert Miller Neal in Madison, WI. Elizabeth grew up in Columbia, MO, where she graduated from University High School. She earned an associate's degree from William Woods College in Fulton, MO, and a master's degree in English from Florida Atlantic University.
Elizabeth and Donald Neitz married on Feb. 8, 1964, in Odell, IL. A year later they moved to West Palm Beach, FL, where they lived until moving in 2007 to West Melbourne.
In West Palm Beach, Elizabeth taught English at Cardinal Newman High School before opening and building a successful antiques business. Elizabeth turned her fondness for Teddy Bears into a large part of the business, selling and buying Steiff stuffed animals, especially bears.
Elizabeth and Don traveled to Germany annually to visit the Steiff factory and friends they had made through Steiff. They sold at some of the largest antique shows in the country, including Brimfield, Mass. Teddy Bears spread into her daily life, too, as she decorated her home with bears of all sizes and styles.
Elizabeth was also a quilter, making personalized quilts for family members and attending quilting festivals around the eastern United States. Her love of language led her to word games, and she was an enthusiastic player of Words with Friends and other word games. In addition to the trips to Germany, she and Don traveled to much of the United States and Europe.
Elizabeth is survived by her husband, Donald Neitz; her children, Daniel (Lisa) Neitz, Nancy (Jon) Lambert and Kenneth (Lora) Neitz; her grandchildren, Jennifer (Chance) Baker, Matthew Neitz, Daniel (Patty) Peterson, Stephanie (Ryan) Duffield, Kristen (Ben) Williams, K.J. Neitz, Bradford (Alix) Lambert, Benjamin Lambert, and Braydon Lambert; her great-granddaughter, Emma Williams; her brother, Bob Neal, and sister, Carol (Bill) Piper, and many nieces and nephews.
Elizabeth was predeceased by her parents Helen and Robert, along with her sisters Margaret and Ruth.
Friends and family are invited to a celebration of Elizabeth's life between 2 and 5 p.m., Saturday, February 17, 2024 at 1954 Botanica Circle in West Melbourne.
The family suggests donation to the American Cancer Society in lieu of flowers.2

———

Darlene went to be with her Lord on Saturday, April 18, 2015. Darlene was born March 3, 1929, in Inwood, Iowa, to Bernard C. and Tilda Alice (Bergeson) Nelson. She was baptized on March 31, 1929, and confirmed May 9, 1943, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church. Darlene graduated from Inwood High School in 1947.

She attended Iowa State Teachers College, graduating in 1952. Darlene’s teaching career included stints at a rural school in Lyons County in Iowa, Melvin Elementary School in Melvin, Iowa, Denison High in Denison, Iowa, and Humphrey High in Humphrey. She did substitute work in Columbus, Norfolk and Battle Creek.

While teaching at Melvin Elementary in Melvin, Iowa, she met the love of her life, Don. They were married June 12, 1953, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Inwood, Iowa. Don teased Darlene that he had married an “older” woman since he was born two days after her, March 5, 1929.

She and Don raised four children together while farming in Melvin, Iowa, Brookings, S.D., and then selling seed corn and insurance in Humphrey, Columbus and in 1967 moving to Norfolk. During their years in Norfolk, Darlene helped Don with their businesses, first selling seed corn to area farmers and then with their insurance business. She and Don built the Triple D Center located on east Omaha Avenue in the early 1980s to house the insurance business and bring other businesses to that part of Norfolk.

Darlene also worked as church secretary at Our Savior Lutheran Church for a number of years. Darlene taught herself how to use a computer early on and continued to enjoy using the computer and her Kindle. When Don’s health began to fail, Darlene became his primary caregiver until he was unable to safely be at home. Don passed away on August 15, 1993.

Darlene continued to work part-time, first at her own business, Secretary Pro Tem, one of the first temporary employment services in Norfolk, and then at Liberty Center and Improved Living Inc.

Throughout her life, Darlene served both her church and her community. She served as president of the Westside PTA, secretary of the Our Savior Lutheran congregation, secretary of Lutheran Laymen’s League and taught Sunday school. The service that held special meaning for her was the time she spent with Lutheran Women’s Missionary League (LWML.) She held various offices in the local, zone and district LWML organizations. Everywhere Darlene went, she found fellow members who had a special bond.

Darlene and Don gave their children their sense of humor. She taught the importance of loving unconditionally. She was a dedicated wife. She had the marriage that we all envied. She managed the house and made sure that her children had everything they needed. She had the ability to take limited funds and made sure that all of the bills were paid.

Don would give her 30 minutes notice that they were going camping, and she could get all four kids and food ready for a weekend. Her husband would come home with all kinds of gadgets including a computer. She taught herself and everyone who asked how to use the computer. She’d embraced her independence since losing her husband in 1993.

She loved to babysit and bake them chocolate chip cookies. She taught them how to make lefsa and eat lutefisk for the holidays. And don’t forget “Uff da.” You have to know “Uff da” to be a true Norwegian. She was very proud of her family.

Darlene will be greatly missed by her children and grandchildren, Grant and Janine Drenkow (Brittany, Nathan and Allison), Brian and Danita Drenkow (Anissa and Kevin Marshall, Shelly and Curt Aust and Jason), Craig and Melodee Drenkow (Cassie and Fred) and Deann Alvarado (Isaac); and two great-grandchildren, Abbygail and Zachary Marshall; sister-in-law Shirley Drenkow of Melvin, Iowa; brother-in-law and wife, Ron and Gladys Drenkow of Sheldon, Iowa; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Donald M. Drenkow; sister and brother-in-law, Donna and Robert Mathieson of Dana Point, Calif.; and brother-in-law Marvin Drenkow of Melvin, Iowa.

Darlene shared her faith at the end, leaving a folder with suggestions for final service, important dates and these notes included the following: “I would like a lot of music. I hope you will help people to think of this as a joyous occasion. I have gone to be with my Lord and to join my husband and my parents!” and “Don’t wear jeans to church!” O2

Memo(1935)Memo: [A note from the Wassmann Family Tree on Ancestry.com]

The following information was provided by Josephine's granddaughter Mrs. Ruth (Wassmann) Arnold.

Josephine and Henry C. Wassmann lived on the same road between Beach North Dakota and Golva as her folks Henry and Sybil Wassmann. One day about two years after the death of Henry C., Joshephine while preparing a turkey for dinner by burning off it's feathers, her dress caught fire. Josephine subsequetly died of those burns.

Ruth remembers seeing her grandmother in bed with burns all over her body. The combination of the burns and the fact that her diabetes was very bad led to her death.

After her death Henry and Sybil moved into Henry's farm as it was owned by Henry C and the farm they were on was rented. They lived and worked that farm until the depression forced them off the land in 1938. They packed up and moved to the Puyallup Valley of Washington State as many farmers had to do in those days.1
