Norbert's Obituary
Ocheyedan, IA

Norbert Bremer of Arnold’s Park, Iowa, went to his Heavenly home on December 13, 2020, just 3 days after his 84th birthday. He had been hospitalized for 2 weeks fighting a battle with Covid-19 at the Lakes Regional Medical Center in Spirit Lake, IA.

A private family graveside service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, December 19, 2020 at the Ocheyedan Township Cemetery, with Reverend Perry Aalgaard officiating. Family will gather at our funeral chapel in Ocheyedan prior to going in procession to the cemetery. There will be military honors by the Wood-Miller American Legion Post No. 326. Service will be recorded and uploaded later to a link on Norbert’s obituary on our website. Norbert Bremer Service

Public visitation will be Friday, December 18th from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Jurrens Funeral Home Andringa Chapel in Ocheyedan, IA. Social distancing guidelines will be followed, and family will not be present.

Norbert was born on December 10, 1936 to Ernest and Minnie (Hesebeck) Bremer in Ocheyedan, Iowa. He attended Zion Lutheran Parochial School, then Ocheyedan High School, graduating in 1955. Norbert served in the U.S. Army after graduation from High School.

He grew up on the family farm near Ocheyedan and began his career in farming working alongside his dad. Norbert took great pride in farming and it remained an important part of his life even after he retired.

In the early 1980’s, Norbert found a new passion to pursue. That is when he began hunting across the U.S., Canada, and the world, in pursuit of big game trophies. He continued on many adventures during the next several decades, until the mountains got a bit too steep and the trails a bit too narrow. That is when he took up fishing, be it lake, river, stream, or ocean.

After retiring from farming, Norbert made Arnold’s Park, Iowa his home. During the past 9 years, he has spent his winters in Arizona. He had made some special friends during those years.

He also enjoyed competing in tractor pulling contests and traveled around the U.S. attending those. With his 2 Oliver tractors he pulled in the open class and won many competitions.

Norbert was a member of the Foundation for North American Wild Sheep (FNAWS) and Safari Club International. He attended those conventions yearly for the past 30 plus years.

He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Spirit Lake, Iowa and enjoyed attending the drive-in worship at First Lutheran Church in Okoboji, Iowa.

Norbert is survived by 3 sisters, Joanne Patrick of Sibley, Iowa, Joyce Scheu of Sibley, Iowa, and Mary (Mike) Boswell of Cody, WY. Nephews LeRon Hromatko, Gene Patrick, Tony Scheu, and Randy Bremer. Nieces Desiree Scheu, Denise (Scheu) Gonnerman, Robyn Bremer, Monica Boswell, and Michelle (Boswell) Schutzman.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Leonard Bremer, brother Gary Bremer, sister Linda Hromatko, brother-in-law Larry Scheu, nephews Larry Hromatko, Michael Boswell, and Mark Boswell. O8

Randall C. Bremer OBITUARY
Randall “Randy” Carl Bremer, 90, of Ruckersville, VA, formerly of Simsbury and East Granby, beloved father and grandfather passed away peacefully attended by his loving family on Sunday (December 8, 2024) at home in Ruckersville, VA after a brief illness. Randy was born to the late Carl Bremer and Helen Rahn Bremer in Ocheyedan, IA, and grew up on the family farm where he would later bring his family for many summer vacations and family reunions. These special times are remembered with great fondness by his children. They’ve continued the family tradition by gathering frequently, most recently in Virginia this past June when all of his children and grandchildren came together to honor his 90th birthday.
Randy attended Valparaiso University before joining the U.S. Army in 1955, which brought him east to the Nike missile base at Talcott Mountain. While stationed there, he met his wife and future in-laws through a church program which invited servicemen to Sunday dinner with local families. It was during one of these Sunday dinners when Lucy returned home from Boston University for Thanksgiving Break that their love story began. They were wed at Avon Congregational Church in August 1958, and their marriage of 62 years was a blessing to all who knew them.
Randy started his long career as an electrical test engineer at Arrow Hart and retired from Carling Technologies. He was a founding member, trustee and choir member of the Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in Simsbury, CT. He enjoyed vegetable gardening and had an engineer’s special knack for being able to fix most anything. He loved fishing, especially sharing time on the water with family and friends. There was almost always some kind of fish stocked in the freezer, along with delicious, fresh-from-the-garden vegetables. He was a hard-working, gentle man of quiet but strong faith and unwavering integrity. His kindness and generosity of spirit was shared freely with his family, friends and neighbors – he was always willing to lend a helping hand.
Randy was predeceased by his parents, his beloved wife Lucille (Lucy), his sisters Eileen and Carol, his brother Dennis, his brother-in-law Wayne Nixon, and a granddaughter, Allison Bremer. He is survived by his brother Richard (Wilma) Bremer of Ocheyedan, Iowa; sister Donna Limmer of Spring, Texas; three children: son James (Karen Crist) Bremer of Walworth, New York; son Karl (Joyce) Bremer of Ruckersville, Virginia; and daughter Jennifer Miller of Stephens City, Virginia; as well as six grandchildren: Sabrina (Henry Philofsky) Bremer, Marisa Bremer, Isabel Bremer, Sophia Bremer, Elizabeth Miller, and Sean Miller; as well as many nieces and nephews. Randy was much-loved and will be greatly missed.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a celebration of Randy’s life at Avon Congregational Church, Reverend Chris Dion presiding, on Thursday, December 19, 2024 at 11:00 AM with graveside service immediately following at Evergreen Cemetery, 76 Climax Road, Avon. There are no calling hours. In Randy’s memory, please consider a donation to Lutheran World Relief or to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. The Vincent Funeral Home of Simsbury, CT is in care of arrangements. Please visit Randy’s memorial website at www.vincentfuneralhome.com. O9

[from funeralplan.com/sanborn/obits?id=309051]

Stanley Darrell Bremer was born at Ocheyedan, IA on November 15, 1925 to Christopher "Chris" Conrad and Eleanor Julia (Meyer) Bremer. He grew up on a farm near May City, IA and attended the local country school through the 8th grade.

On June 10, 1947, Stanley was united in marriage to Cleo Mae Guhl at St. John's Lutheran Church in May City. To this union two sons were born: Wayne and Steven.

Following their marriage, the couple was engaged in agriculture for two years on the family farm. Stanley also worked with Dick Imhoff at the Body-Repair Shop in May City. He then used his skills at Ray Reinke's Body Shop in Hartley, IA. Eventually, an employment opportunity became available at Rock Rapids, IA, so Stanley moved his family there and began using the trade he had learned at Imhoff's shop in May City. The same situation took the family to Fremont, CA when Stanley began working for the Central Chevrolet Dealership located in that city. While employed there, Stan participated in GM Schooling, and various other auto body tech courses. His experience, along with his natural mechanical ability earned him the title of Assistant Manager of the body shop at Central Chevrolet.

As his parents' health began to fail, Stan and Cleo decided to move back to Iowa. In 1972, they purchased the Reinke Body Shop in Hartley where Stan operated his own business until his retirement. Once he did retire, Stan had more time to do the things he rarely had the time to do before, like woodworking, fishing and boating. Part of the summer was spent at home, and the other at their cabin in Spirit Lake, IA. Along with his talent for repairing and restoring, Stan always had an interest in art. Those two combined made him a real "Mr. Fix-It"; something he enjoyed doing his entire life.

Stan was an active member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church MS at Fremont. Over the years, he served as an elder, sat on Church Council, taught Bible Class, and was the Youth Counselor for the Youth Group while in Rock Rapids and Fremont. He was currently a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hartley. Stanley passed from this life December 19, 2013 at the age of 88 years.

Preceding him in death were his grandparents; his parents; and two sisters; and two brothers.

Survivors include his wife, Cleo of Hartley, IA; sons, Wayne Bremer of Kiowa, CO and his children: Eero and Vanessa; Steven Bremer of Hartley, IA; sisters: Joyce Fowler of Adel, IA, Virginia Smith of Fremont, CA, other relatives and friends.

[from funeralplan.com/sanborn/obits?id=309052]
Steven D. Bremer, son of Stanley Darrell and Cleo Mae (Guhl) Bremer was born October 12, 1951 at Hartley, IA. He lived his youth in the Hartley area until his father's occupation dictated a move to Rock Rapids, IA, then to Fremont, CA. Steve was confirmed at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church MS in Fremont, CA where he completed his education, graduating from high school there.

After high school, Steve served his country for 3 years in the United States Navy aboard an aircraft carrier. Following his honorable discharge, he was employed by the Spokane Airlines for a time. He also worked at a lumber camp and was groundskeeper for Marilyn Rider. As his parents required more assistance, Steve relocated back to Hartley in order to help out where he could.

Being an artist at heart, whenever Steve could find some "down-time", he would spend it drawing or dabbling in photography. He too, was a "Mr. Fix-It" like his dad. He passed away on April 7, 2016 at the age of 64 years.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, William and Adelila Guhl, and Christopher and Eleanor Bremer; his father, Stanley D. Bremer; and two paternal aunts and uncles.

Left to cherish his memory are his mother, Cleo of Hartley, IA; his brother, Wayne Bremer of Kiowa, CO, and his children: Eero and Vanessa; aunts: Joyce Fowler of Adel, IA, and Virginia Smith of Fremont, CA; other relatives and friends.

Wayne Allen Bremer was born on July 22, 1940 in Worthington, Minnesota. He was the son of Albert and Margaret (Hartwig) Bremer of Ocheyedan, Iowa. Wayne was baptized August 25, 1940 and confirmed April 11, 1954 at Zion Lutheran Church, Ocheyedan, Iowa. He was a life member at Zion and active in his church as a Sunday School Teacher, Adult Bible Study Leader, and he held various offices within the congregation. Wayne began his education at Lone Star School, then at Ocheyedan Public and at Zion Lutheran. He graduated from Ocheyedan High School in May of 1958. Wayne attended Agriculture College in Brookings, South Dakota for two years, graduating in 1960. He worked for area farmers before taking over his father’s farm in 1963.
Wayne met Bonitta “Bonnie” Christopherson at Zion Lutheran School when Bonnie taught there. They were united in marriage on June 16, 1963 at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Brookings, South Dakota. To this union two children were born, Nathan and Valerie.
In addition to farming, Wayne worked at Sather’s from 1978 to 1982 and at Northern Iowa Die Cast from 1993 to 2005. In 2015, Wayne and Bonnie retired and moved to Sibley, Iowa where Wayne was involved in the Historical Society.
Wayne enjoyed reading, especially local area history involving the church and community. He also collected coins, stamps and toy farm equipment, for 45 years.
He passed away on Tuesday, February 4, 2020 at Avera McKennan Medical Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
Those left to cherish his memories are his wife of 56 years, Bonnie Bremer of Sibley, IA; one son, Nathan Bremer of Paullina, IA; one daughter, Valerie Bremer of Grafton, WI; one sister, Verna (Ted) Cash of Charlotte, NC; sister-in-law, Betty (Carl) Brooks of Wilhoit, AZ, four nephews and numerous cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents and infant sister, Belva. O9

WILLIAM BREWSTER
ORIGIN:
Leiden, Holland

MIGRATION: 1620 on Mayflower

FIRST RESIDENCE: Plymouth

REMOVES: Duxbury

OCCUPATION: Publisher (in Leiden). (See R. Breugelmans, ed., The Pilgrim Press, a bibliographical & historical memorial of the books printed at Leyden by the Pilgrim Fathers by Rendel Harris & Stephen R. Jones, With a chapter on the location of the Pilgrim Press in Leyden by Dr. Plooij, Partial reprint with new contributions by R. Breugelmans, J.A. Gruys & Keith Sprunger [Nieuwkoop 1987].)

CHURCH MEMBERSHIP: Morison summarized Brewster's church activities prior to 1620: "One of the original members of the separatist congregation at Scrooby which became the nucleus of the Pilgrim church, he immigrated with them to Holland in 1608, and became elder and teacher of their church at Leyden" [Morison 368]. With no minister at the Plymouth church for most of the years before Brewster's death, he was the lay leader and preached to the congregation regularly, and continued in this manner after his move to Duxbury. In the course of relating the controversy surrounding John Lyford, Bradford recounts how "our reverend Elder hath labored diligently in dispensing the Word of God to us, before he came: and since, hath taken equal pains with himself, in preaching the same" [Bradford 162]. Included in the inventory of his library were "7 sermons by W B," which may have been his notes for some of his own sermons.

FREEMAN: In 1633 Plymouth list of freemen, prior to those admitted on 1 January 1632/3 [PCR 1:3]. In list of 7 March 1636/7 [PCR 1:52]. In Plymouth section of list of 1639 (annotated "dead") [PCR 8: 173].

EDUCATION: Entered Peterhouse, Cambridge, 3 December 1580, but did not graduate [Venn 1:213; Morison 368]. Within the inventory of William Brewster separate listings were made of his Latin and English books, with nearly four hundred titles included; "the total of both Latin & English books amounts to the sum of £42 19s. 1 Id." [MD 3:27].

ESTATE: In the list of Plymouth "meersteads & garden plots of [those] which came first laid out 1620" Mr. W[illia]m Brewster is on the south side of the street, at the corner of the highway, and next to John Goodman [PCR 12:3].

In the 1623 Plymouth land division Mr. William Brewster received six acres as a passenger on the Mayflower, and "Pacience & Fear Brewster" received two acres as passengers on the Anne [PCR 12:4, 6]. In the 1627 Plymouth cattle division "Mr. Will[ia]m Brewster," Love Brewster and Wrestling Brewster were the first three names in the fifth company [PCR 12:10].

Assessed £1 7s in the Plymouth tax lists of 25 March 1633 and 27 March 1634 [PCR 1:9, 27].

Administration on the estate of William Brewster was granted on 5 June 1644 to Jonathan Brewster and Love Brewster [MD 3:15, citing PCR 2:101]. The inventory of the estate of William Brewster, taken 18 May 1644, totalled £150 7d., with no real estate included [MD 3:15-27, citing PCPR 1 :53-59].

"Whereas William Brewster late of Plymouth, gent., deceased left only two sons surviving vizt. Jonathan the eldest and Love the younger and whereas the said William died intestate for ought can to this day appear," the two sons requested William Bradford, Edward Winslow, Thomas Prence and Myles Standish to assist them in coming to an agreement, and on 20 August 1645 a division was made. Jonathan Brewster was excused the debt he had owed to his father, except £4 "in consideration of the wintering of some cattle which the said Jonathan had the summering upon the division and for the diet of Isaack Allerton a grandchild of the said Will[ia]m which he had placed with his son Love to table and because he was the first born of his father we gave him his father's arms and also a two year old heifer over and above his part of the dividables of the said estate," and Love received his father's dwelling house. The lands were divided equally, except for a dispute over the lands at Duxbury, of which sixty-eight acres went to Jonathan (along with a "dwelling house which the said Jonathan had built on the said land by leave of his said father") and forty-three acres went to Love "and the reason wherefore we gave Love the less quantity was and is because the quality of Love's land in goodness is equal to the quantity of Jonathan's as we judge" [MD 3:27-30, citing PCLR 1:198-99; PCR 12:115-17].

BIRTH: About 1566, probably at Scrooby, Nottinghamshire, son of William Brewster.

DEATH: Duxbury 10 April 1644 [MD 1:7].

MARRIAGE: By 1593 Mary____. She died at Plymouth 17 April 1627 [MD 1:7]. (See COMMENTS below for discussion of her identity.)

CHILDREN:

JONATHAN BREWSTER, b. Scrooby, Nottinghamshire, 12 August 1593 [MD 1:7]; m. Plymouth 10 April 1624 "Lucretia Oldam of Darby" [MD 1:8]; she was bp. All Saints, Derby, Derbyshire, 14 January 1600/1, and was sister of JOHN OLDHAM [PM 345].
PATIENCE BREWSTER, b. say 1603; m. Plymouth 5 August 1624 THOMAS PRENCE [PM 374], "the ninth marriage at New Plymouth" [Prince 229].
FEAR BREWSTER, b. say 1605; m. Plymouth by 1627 ISAAC ALLERTON [Bradford 218,242; PM 10].
LOVE BREWSTER, b. say 1607; m. Plymouth 15 May 1634 Sarah Collier [PCR 1:30], daughter of WILLIAM COLLIER [PM 128].
Child BREWSTER, bur. St. Pancras, Leiden, 20 June 1609 [NS] [Dexter 605].
WRESTLING BREWSTER, b. say 1611; d. unm after 1627 and by 1651 [Bradford 444; see GDMNH 109, MD 43:13, Waterhouse Anc 67].
COMMENTS: In his list of passengers on the Mayflower Bradford included "Mr. William Brewster, Mary, his wife, with two sons, whose names were Love and Wrestling" [Bradford 441]. In the accounting of 1651 we find that "Mr. Brewster lived to very old age; about 80 years he was when he died, having lived some 23 or 24 years here in the country. And though his wife died long before, yet she died aged. His son Wrestling died a young man unmarried. His son Love lived till this year 1650 and died and left four children, now living. His daughters which came over after him are dead but have left sundry children alive. His eldest son is still living and hath nine or ten children; one married who hath a child or two" [Bradford 444].

The quest for the identity of Mary, the wife of William Brewster, has attracted the attention of many genealogists, but as yet without a definitive result. For some time she had been thought to be Mary Wentworth, daughter of Thomas Wentworth of Scrooby, and in 1965 John G. Hunt presented his case in favor of this identity [TAG 41:1-5, 63], but this claim was rejected by Rubincam and others, and Hunt himself has now given up this position. He has, however, published a pamphlet claiming that she was a certain Mary Wyrrall, based on the appearance in a will of a bequest to "Mary Butho," which Hunt took be a variant of Brewster resulting from a speech defect in the person dictating the will [John G. Hunt, Of Mary Brewster: The Identity of Mary, Wife of Elder William BREWSTER of the Mayflower Voyage of 1620 from Plymouth, England, to New Plymouth, New England (Bowling Green, Virginia, 1984)]. Eugene A. Stratton reviewed this volume negatively in 1985 [Detroit Society for Genealogical Research Magazine 48:135-36], to which Hunt responded with a supplement to his pamphlet [Of Mary Brewster, part two (Bowling Green, Virginia, August 1985]. The maiden surname of Mary, wife of Elder Brewster, remains unknown. (Hunt has published other articles on various aspects of William Brewster's life, which, as with all of Hunt's work, need to be used with caution: "'Master Williamson' of the Mayflower" [NGSQ 62:88-90]; "The Mother of Elder William Brewster of the Mayflower" [NEHGR 124:250-56]; "Mary Stubbe - A Connection of Elder William Brewster?" [NEHGR 128:288-90].)

A number of other children have been proposed for William Brewster, although there is no reason to accept any of these proposals. Jacobus in 1936 disposed of the claimed connections between William Brewster of Plymouth and Francis Brewster of New Haven and his son Nathaniel [TAG 12:199-210, 13:8-21, 113-116]. Mary Walton Ferris proposed a son Edward, for whom there is no evidence [Dawes-Gates 2:151].

BIBLIOGRAPHIC NOTE: Emma C. Brewster Jones published early in this century a serviceable genealogy of the family [The Brewster Genealogy, 1566-1907 ..., 2 volumes (New York 1908)]. Among the many versions of the family published in all-my-ancestor volumes the most complete is that of Mary Walton Ferris [Dawes-Gates 2:142-56].

The General Society of Mayflower Descendants published in its "Mayflower Families in Progress" series an accounting of the first four generations of descendants of William Brewster, prepared by Barbara Lambert Merrick, the third edition of which was published in 2000. Two additional volumes by the same compiler were published in 1999 and 2000, the first of these on the fifth-generation descendants of son Jonathan Brewster, and the second on the fifth-generation descendants of daughter Patience (Brewster) Prence.

In 1985 and 1986 Jeremy D. Bangs published a three-part article presenting and discussing all known documents naming Jonathan Brewster in Leiden [MQ 51:161-67, 52:6-16, 57-63]. Bangs examined the claim made by the Dexters that Jonathan Brewster had an earlier wife and child while residing in Leiden and determined that the records cited by the Dexters did not pertain to Jonathan Brewster.3

Bangs examined the claim made by the Dexters that Jonathan Brewster had an earlier wife and child while residing in Leiden and determined that the records cited by the Dexters did not pertain to Jonathan Brewster.5

Bangs examined the claim made by the Dexters that Jonathan Brewster had an earlier wife and child while residing in Leiden and determined that the records cited by the Dexters did not pertain to Jonathan Brewster.4

CHILDREN:

(Hunt has published other articles on various aspects of William Brewster's life, which, as with all of Hunt's work, need to be used with caution: "'Master Williamson' of the Mayflower" [NGSQ 62:88-90]; "The Mother of Elder William Brewster of the Mayflower" [NEHGR 124:250-56]; "Mary Stubbe - A Connection of Elder William Brewster?" Memo10 Apr 2026Biography: Elder William Brewster (c. 1566–1644)

Elder William Brewster was born around 1566 in Scrooby, Nottinghamshire, England, during the reign of Elizabeth I, a period often called the Elizabethan Age. England at that time was experiencing both cultural flowering and deep religious tension. The Church of England had broken from Rome only a generation earlier, and many believers—like Brewster—felt it had not gone far enough in reform.

Educated at Cambridge, Brewster entered public service as a postmaster and bailiff in Scrooby, a position that placed him along important government and diplomatic routes. Yet his life soon took a decisive turn toward religion. By the early 1600s, he had become a central figure in a Separatist congregation—those who believed the Church of England was beyond reform and that true believers must separate entirely.

This belief put him in direct conflict with the English crown under James I of England, who enforced religious conformity. Facing persecution, Brewster and his fellow Separatists fled England in 1608, first to Amsterdam and then to Leiden in the Dutch Republic. There, in a more tolerant society, he became a religious leader—“Ruling Elder”—and supported the community by teaching and later operating a printing press. His press was not merely a livelihood; it became a tool for producing religious materials critical of English authorities, forcing him at times into hiding.

Despite relative freedom in Holland, economic hardship and concern over losing their English identity—especially among their children—led Brewster and his congregation to consider a bold move: establishing a new colony in the New World.

In 1620, Brewster, his wife Mary, and two of their sons boarded the Mayflower. The voyage itself was perilous, lasting over two months across the Atlantic. When they arrived off Cape Cod in November 1620, far north of their intended destination, Brewster was among the signers of the Mayflower Compact—a foundational document of self-government in what would become New England.

The early years in Plymouth were harsh. The winter of 1620–1621 brought disease and death, claiming nearly half the settlers. Brewster’s wife Mary survived these early struggles but died in 1627. Through it all, Brewster served as the colony’s spiritual leader. Because Plymouth lacked an ordained minister for many years, he regularly preached, counseled, and guided the community.

Brewster also lived through key events in early colonial history, including relations—both cooperative and tense—with Native American tribes, and the gradual stabilization of the Plymouth Colony. In England, meanwhile, tensions between monarchy and Parliament were building toward what would later become the English Civil War—a conflict rooted in many of the same religious and political disputes that had driven Brewster to leave decades earlier.

As a senior figure in Plymouth, Brewster was involved in both civic and economic affairs, including participation in agreements that helped sustain the struggling colony. He spent his later years in Duxbury, Massachusetts, continuing his role as elder and advisor.

William Brewster died on April 10, 1644, at about 78 years of age—remarkably old for his time. By then, Plymouth Colony had taken firm root, and his children and grandchildren were part of a growing New England society.

His legacy is profound. As a religious leader, he helped shape the spiritual foundation of the Pilgrim community. As a passenger on the Mayflower and signer of the Mayflower Compact, he stands among the earliest architects of self-governance in America. And as an ancestor to thousands, including your own line, his life represents the intersection of faith, courage, and the search for freedom that defined the early colonial experience.
