Obituary | April 1896 | Obituary: The obituary for James was recorded in April 1896. According to the 1896 obituary of James W. Willey (see below), he was born near Nashville, Tennessee on 10 Dec. 1818. This is consistent with available census data. He identified his father as the pastor of an Methodist Episcopal church near Nashville, of which he became a member at the age of 18. At the age of 19 (ca 1838), he moved to Greenville in Bond County, Illinois, where he lived near two of his brothers. In the History of Bond and Montgomery Counties, Illinois 1882 - Part 1, page 85, the following “old settlers” of the City of Greenville were listed: “Willey, John F., Wilson W., and James W., brothers.” James W. Willey’s obituary claimed he was only married twice and that four children were born to his first marriage, before his marriage to Elizabeth V. Edwards. However, records indicate that James W. Willey married six women: 1840: Mary Ann Jackson b. 27 Jan 1819/Tennessee d. ca 1848/Greenville, Bond Co., Illinois fa. Larkin Jackson (1786-1869) mo. Mary Norman (b. 1814/KY) m.1 29 Aug. 1850/Bond Co., Illinois/John Nelson Edwards m.2 3 September 1859/Bond Co., Illinois/James W. Willey In 1859, James W. Willey married Elizabeth Vineyard Merry, widow of John Nelson Edwards. Elizabeth and James each had at least four children from prior marriages. Together, they had at least eight more. In 1867, Elizabeth’s oldest daughter from her first marriage, Mary Ellen Edwards, married James Willey’s oldest son from his first marriage, Wilson Isaac Willey. In 1868, Wilson and Mary Ellen left Illinois in a covered wagon and settled near Independence, Kansas. After two years, they moved to Nebraska, where they settled along the Republic River, three miles north of Alma in Harlan County. James W. Willey and his family left Bond County in 1869 and moved to Hamburg, Fremont County, Iowa. After one year, they moved to Thayer County, Nebraska, where they homesteaded on Rose Creek, in the northwest quarter of Section 26. James sold the homestead to a Daniel Brown from Wisconsin in April 1878 for $1,100.00. The Hebron Journal, dated 25 April 1878, recorded the sale. James and his family moved to Fairbury, Nebraska for a few months, where his daughter Hattie died from a diphtheria epidemic. According to the Hebron Journal, they stayed a few weeks in Hebron, Nebraska with his step-son John Edwards and his family. From there, they moved to Alma, Harlan County, Nebraska, where his son, Wilson Isaac Willey lived. Agricultural records for the year 1879 for James W. Willey of Harlan County, Nebraska, read as follows: “Improved land, 61 acres; unimproved land, 100 acres; 2 mules; 1 cow, 150 lb. of butter fat; 6 swine; 12 chickens; 4 eggs; 10 acres barley, 140 bu; 10 acres Indian corn, 300 bu; 50 acres wheat, 1000 bu.” His son Wilson’s homestead was between Orleans and Alma, according to Norris Willey, grandson of Wilson, who was living at Arapaho, Nebraska in 1995. In Alma, James and Elizabeth became members of the Free Methodist Church, by letter from Tennessee. [Helen Willey Pedrick] They remained in Alma for 13 years, where James suffered a stroke from which he never fully recovered and was left with some paralysis. In 1891, they moved back to the small town of Sidney, in Fremont County, Iowa. James W. Willey died in Sidney, Iowa on 9 April 1896 and is buried there. Although a Methodist, his funeral was held in the Baptist Church and officiated by a Presbyterian minister.2 |
