Obituary | 19 November 2010 | Obituary: The obituary for Herbert was recorded on 19 November 2010. [from nwi.com, 19 Nov 2010] The Rev. Reichert lived long, full life The Rev. Herbert F. Reichert, who died recently at the age of 90, made a homecoming of sorts, when he was laid to rest in the cemetery of Dyer's Zion United Church of Christ on Nov. 6.
He was baptized, confirmed and finally ordained in Zion United Church of Christ, said his sister, Margaret Brink. His first wife, Martha Jean, was buried in the cemetery, and he was brought home to rest beside her.
Reichert's long, full life began in the farming country, south of Dyer, she said. Zion United Church of Christ would always be their home church. Their grandfather had been one of its founding members. Reichert was "my big brother (4 1/2 years older)," Brink said. "We were very close."
She recalled how her brother was on the verge of becoming a minister at the same time she was expecting a child.
"We were (joking) about who was going to do it first."
He would be ordained before her child was born. And the last time he spoke to her, she said, he was still trying to be the big brother.
"He was telling me, 'You've got to go to the doctor.' "
Reichert studied for his ministry in Maywood, Ill. He eventually moved to Parma, Ohio, where he lived with his wife of 30 years, Joan.
Reichert was the father of four, stepfather to three, grandfather of 19 and great-grandfather of four. He was also a loyal member of the Brooklyn Kiwanis Club, in Cleveland.
The family has asked that in lieu of flowers, memorials in Reichert's name be made to the Brooklyn Kiwanis at 910 West Schaaf Road, Cleveland, Ohio, or the St. Paul United Church of Christ in Parma, Ohio.
In addition to his family and his faith, Reichert was devoted to the job that consumed him for 29 years: chaplain at Deaconess Hospital in Cleveland. In its way, the job was a fulfillment of one of his boyhood interests, said his sister. He'd been so fascinated with the process of dissecting animals in science class, he said he thought he'd like to become a surgeon, she said.
Later on, of course, he felt a call to the ministry. But the work at Deaconess was a way to come full circle. He could be a part of medicine while still answering his call.
"He felt it was the best of both worlds," Brink said.4 |
