Wilford G. Cornelius, 87, of Pine Street, Saltillo, and formerly of Newburg, died Monday, Dec. 6, 1999, in J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital, Huntingdon. Born April 10, 1912, in Saltillo, Huntingdon County, he was a son of the late Beaver and Alma Green Cornelius. He was a member of Roxbury United Methodist Church. Mr. Cornelius was a 1931 graduate of the former Saltillo High School.

He and his wife formerly owned Kenmar Motel, Newburg, having operated it for 14 years. Previously, they owned and operated the former Cornelius Self-Service Market for 24 years and the former Cornelius Hardware Store for 10 years. Both were in Orbisonia. The last original bank board member of Community State Bank of Orbisonia, he was a member of Orbisonia Lodge 572, Free and Accepted Masons.

He and his wife, Erma E. Chilcoat Cornelius, were married April 6, 1938. She died Aug. 17, 1997. A brother also preceded him in death. Surviving are a sister, Nancy Starr of Saltillo, with whom he resided; nieces and nephews.

Burial will be Thursday, in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Cromwell Township, Huntingdon County.2

FORT LOUDON, Pa. - J. Edwin Cornelius, 85, of Fort Loudon, died Wednesday, April 7, 1999, at home.

Born Sept. 20, 1913, in Saltillo, Pa., he was the son of the late Beaver and Alma Green Cornelius.

He and his wife owned and operated grocery stores in Cassville, Pa., Three Springs, Pa., Fort Loudon and McConnellsburg, Pa., and four furniture stores in Hancock, Pa., McConnellsburg and Mercersburg, Pa., and one from their home.

He had a barn storm baseball team called "Nellie Fox All Stars." He was a scout for the Kansas City baseball team in its first two years in the American League.

He was active in the McConnellsburg and Mercersburg Chamber of Commerce and served one term as president of the Mercersburg Chamber. He was active in having back roads rebuilt.

He is survived by his wife, Geraldine Smith Cornelius, whom he married Oct. 5, 1933; two daughters, Elsie White of McConnellsburg and Dorothy Seiden of Miami; a sister, Nancy Starr of Saltillo; a brother, Wilford Cornelius of Saltillo; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren, including Terrie Mumma, whom he raised; and five great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Howard L. Sipes Funeral Home, Harrisonville, Pa. The Revs. David Ford and Joseph Orr will officiate. Burial will be in Saltillo Cemetery.

Visitation will be Saturday from 2 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.2

Highly respected citizen passes away at home on Saturday

Edwin Stanton Cornelius, on of Saltillo's most highly respected citizens and a lifelong resident of that place, passed away at his home on Saturday night, Oct 26, 1940 at 11:25pm. Although in failing health he was seriously ill only a few hours.
He was the oldest child of Walter and Amanda (Kough) Cornelius and was born in Saltillo on March 10, 1862. He was aged at the time of death 78 years, 7 months and 16 days.
He was united in marriage with Annie Hudson, of Three Springs, on January 10, 1884 by the Rev. A. B. McCurdy, Baptist minister at that place. Mrs. Cornelius preceded her husband in death on March 15, 1939.
Mr. Cornelius was employed by the East Broad Top Railroad for 35 years. Twenty-seven years of that time we worked as an engine hostler at Robertsdale. In May 1936, he retired. Prior to his (unreadable) company he was employed at the Saltillo tannery for 20 years.
The deceased was an active member of the Saltillo Methodist church for 55 years. He was a member of the board of trustees for many years. He was also faithful to the services of the Saltillo Baptist church. His employment at Robertsdale necessitated his spending Sundays at that place where he took an active part in Methodist church work.
Mr. Cornelius was deeply interested in education and in any movement for the advancement of the community. He was kenly interested in the history of Saltillo and the surrounding community. His authority on this subject was recognized. His loss in the community will be deeply felt.
He was a member of the P.O.S. of A. at Three Springs for 50 years. He was one of the founders and an active member of the Saltillo Brotherhood.
Mr. Cornelius is survived by these children: Arthur Cornelius, Three Springs, R.D.; Mary Cornelius, Three Springs, at home; Beaver Cornelius, Saltillo; Ira Cornelius, of Youngstown, Ohio; Clarence Cornelius, Saltillo; Pauline, Mrs. Hayes Querry, Calvin; his oldest daughter, Mrs. Edith Fleming, preceded him in death in 1938. nineteen grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren also survive.
The following brothers and sisters also survive: John Cornelius, Roaring Spring; Mrs. Anna Mary Conner, Youndwood, Pa.; Mrs. Hattie Foore, Calvin; Rufus Cornelius, Mount Union; Mrs Cary Winters, Six Mile Run; Miles Cornelius, Mapleton Depot, R. D.; Ross Cornelius, Three Springs, R. D.; Mrs. Sarah Chamberlain, Saltillo.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 30 at 1:30 o'clock in the Saltillo Methodist church in charge of his pastor, the Rev. R. B. Dysart, assisted by the Rev. R. M. Wilkinson, pastor of the Baptist church at Saltillo. Interment will be made in the Saltillo cemetery directed by Greene funeral service. Friends may call at the late home until 11 o'clock on Wednesday morning. The body will then be taken to the church where it may be viewed until the hour of the funeral service.2

Mrs. Annie Cornelius, wife of Edwin S. Cornelius, of Saltillo, passed away at her residence on Wednesday
morning, March 15, 1939, at 11:15 o'clock.

She was the daughter of Ephraim and Eliza (Newman) Hudson and was born in Three Springs on November 17, 1861. At the time of death she was aged 77 years, 3 months, and 28 days. Mrs. Cornelius was a faithful and devout member of the Saltillo Baptist church having united with that church on January 28, 1880.

She was a loving wife, mother, and a generous neighbor. Her passing is keenly felt by her immediate family and a host of friends.

On January 10, 1884, she was united in marriage to Edwin S. Cornelius, who survives with the following children: Arthur Cornelius, Mount Union; Beaver Cornelius and Clarence Cornelius, Saltillo; Ira Cornelius, Youngstown, Ohio; Mrs. Hayes Querry, Calvin; and Miss May Cornelius, at home. One son died in infancy and one daughter, Mrs. Edith Fleming died on March 30, 1938. Two brothers, George Hudson, Pitcairn; Edgar A. Hudson, Three Springs; and two sisters, Mrs. A.H. Wilson and Mrs. Clay Park, both of Three Springs; and nineteen grandchildren and five great-grandchildren also survive.

Funeral services will be held at the Saltillo Baptist church on Saturday afternoon, March 18, at 2:15 o'clock. The Rev. James Taylor, pastor of the Saltillo Baptist church, assisted by Rev. W. W. Breckhill, will officiate. Interment will be made in Saltillo Cemetery.6
