[from Dickinson County News, 11 November 2009, online] Richard Riley Ayres Wednesday, November 11, 2009 Dickinson County News Funeral services were held Oct. 27, 2009 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Spirit Lake for Richard Riley Ayres, 81, of Spirit Lake, who passed away Oct. 23, 2009 at Lakes Regional Healthcare as the result of a massive heart attack. Rev. Phill Andreasen officiated. Special music was provided by his daughter, Ann Ayres Bass on organ, granddaughter Laura Ayres on piano and family friend, Jack Ryan of Spencer, on trumpet. Interment was in Spirit Lake Memorial Gardens. Ayres was born March 10, 1928 to Charles and Floy (Cornelius) Ayres. He was a lifelong resident of Spirit Lake. He graduated from Spirit Lake in 1946 and then joined the Army in October. He served at Camp McGill in Japan in 1947-48. In 1948-49 he attended A.I.B. and worked part-time for Younkers in Des Moines in the credit department where he and another employee locked up the daily receipts in the vault each night. Later he transferred his G.I. Bill of Rights to "On The Job Training" at the Lake Park News. During his senior year in high school, Richard met Mary Lou Hummel and after a four year courtship, they married on April 16, 1950 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Spirit Lake. In December, they purchased the Lakes Printing Company, an in-house print shop for Berkley & Co. from Berkley and Elinor Bedell and opened the shop to the public. They enlarged and operated this business working together for 56 years before selling it to their son, Rick. In 2001 Mary Lou and Richard were honored as Grand Marshals in the Chamber Mainsail-A-Bration in honor of being a 50-year old business in town. Dick began his long history of community service when he joined Kiwanis in 1951 and had an outstanding 57+ years of perfect attendance. During the years he chaired many committees and served as President in 1965. Lakes Printing was privileged to the printer for the Nebraska-Iowa District Kiwanis Bulletin for 33 years. During 1965 he and his brother, Connie, also a printer living in Jackson, Minn., were the only brothers in Kiwanis International serving as president of their respective clubs the same year. They were also the only brothers each printing their separate District Kiwanis Bulletins. Interesting Kiwanis Trivia: Dick and Rick are one of only two sets of father-son to serve as president of the Kiwanis Noon Club -Dick in 1965 and Rick in 1988-89. Dick was a Scout Master for Troop 167 for eight years and took his troop to Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico. He was a member of the Spirit Lake City Council for 13 years; member of the City Board of Adjustment for eight years; President, Elder, Treasurer and Church Council of Immanuel Lutheran Church; life member of VFW; member of Printing Industries of the Midlands; Past President Iowa Division Izaak Walton League of America; state IWLA treasurer for over 25 years; secretary and member of the National IWLA Endowment Board 20 years; served as president of local Kiwanis and Izaak Walton League Chapter; and active in other organizations. Dick was honored to have received the Kiwanis' Citizen of the Years Award in 1972. In 2008 Dick and Mary Lou retired after 10 years as chairpersons for the Fifty-Plus School Reunion held each year. Another special award was in 2001 when he and Rick each were honored as the Iowa Distinguished Printer of the Year by Printing Industries of the Midlands, the only father and son ever honored in the same year. Left to honor his memory is his wife, Mary Lou of Spirit Lake; daughter, Ann and Jim Bass of Grimes; son Rick and Sue Ayres of Spirit Lake; four granddaughters, Laura and Emily Ayres, Lisa Wiebenga of Spirit Lake and Laura W. and Matt Fouty of Grand Rapids, Mich. and their son, great grandson, Kalin; and the mother of granddaughters Laura and Emily, Carol Ayres and her husband Doug Stueven of Spirit Lake. Preceding him in death was his father in 1938, mother in 1960, brother Connie and Lois Ayres; Ed and Lena Hummel, Mary Lou's parents; Betty Banning, sister-in-law; and George Banning and Johnny Hummel, brothers-in-law. The Schuchert Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.²
