He was the tenth child of Frederick and Dorothea Glade, who had immigrated to the United States from Germany in 1853, at ages 17 and 7 respectively. After the Civil War, when Frederick Glade was discharged from the army, he and Dorothea were married and farmed in Indiana. In 1883, Chris came with his family by rail to Sibley, and then by wagon to a farm 4 1/2 miles north of what is now Ocheyedan. They were crowded into a small rented house across the road from the farm Frederick Glade had bought until their house was built. As Chris was only two years old, he didn't remember the hardships and trials this pioneer family faced in establishing their new home. Three more children joined the family after they moved to Iowa. Over the years more and more sod was broken, until the 320 acres Frederick Glade had bought were tillable. This farm was divided into three sections, and Chris farmed the home place after he married Rosa Schlacht in 1907. He farmed this land until they bought the bare 160 acres north of the Fred Glade homestead. After a house and barn were built, the Chris Glade family moved in 1917. The family of four sons and four daughters grew up on this farm, went to the country school, and graduated from Ocheyedan High School. In 1942, Chris and Rosa moved to a house they had bought in Ocheyedan. Rosa died suddenly of a heart attack in 1949, and Chris died in 1959. The house was sold to Robert Reiste. The Chris Glades left many descendants, Erwin, their oldest child, was a carpenter. He married Ella Bremer and lived in Ocheyedan, where they raised four children. Frederick teaches in Minnesota; Eugene is a Lutheran minister in Minnesota; Karen is married to Ron Schroeder, a mortician in Akron, Iowa; and Joel is a contractor in Minnesota. Erwin died in August, 1987, after many years in a nursing home. Ester Glade was a teacher and married John Heisler, a farmer. They raised three children. Phillip is a parochial teacher in Illinois; Jim teaches in Ruthven, Iowa; and Barbara is a dental hygienist, married to Bill McDowell, and lives in Georgia. Esther died December 1985, after battling cancer for many years. Ruth never married and worked at various jobs. She kept house for her father until his death. in 1966, she moved to Spencer, Iowa, and lived with her sister, Esther, after her husband's sudden death. Ruth was in failing health from a blood condition; and after a hip replacement, she entered a nursing home and died there in May, 1985. Gerhardt died December, 1936, at 25 years of age, after lingering two years as a paraplegic following an automobile accident. Ted farmed on the home place and later became a carpenter. He married Elsie Hesebeck, and they raised three children. Dick is a carpenter and lives in Ocheyedan; Diane is married to Dennis Davids, and they live in Sibley; and Paul lives in Arizona. Ted died May, 1972, in Sheldon, Iowa, where they had lived for some time. Florence taught school and married Raymond Heetland, a farmer. They farmed near May City and moved to Sheldon in 1963. They moved to their present home on West Okoboji in 1971. They raised five children. Harlan lives in Lincoln, Nebraska; Colleen lives in Spirit Lake, Iowa; Jerry lives near May City; Patricia lives in St. Cloud, Minnesota, and is married to Jim Swenson; ray, Jr., lives in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Bernard graduation from Iowa State University. He was a navigator in the air force during World War II. He married Elizabeth moreland from Galveston, Texas, and they raised four children. Jane lives in Virginia, married to Anton Malich; Bernard, Jr., lives in Florida; Tom lives in Washington; and John lives in Texarkana. Texas. Bernard died suddenly as a result of a heart attack in May, 1986. Edith became a registered nurse and married Robert Drexler. They raised three children. Margo is married to Andre Moeckel and lives in Sonoma, California; Robert, Jr., lives in Burlington, Iowa; and Jeffrey lives in Oregon. Edith lives in retirement in Shawano, Wisconsin. Two direct descendants of the Chris Glade family remain, along with 22 grandchildren, 53 great grandchildren and several great great grandchildren.2 |

Duane L Glade Duane L Glade, 84 of 300 Sesame Street, Cherokee, Iowa died Thursday December 15, 2005 in the Cherokee Regional Medical Center, following a brief illness. Visitation will be Sunday from 2:00pm to 7:00pm with a funeral service at 7:00pm at the Greenwood Funeral home, Cherokee, Iowa. He will then be flown to Dumas, Arkansas for burial next to his loving wife of 54 years in the Oakland Cemetery in Monticello, Arkansas. Online condolences may be sent at www.greenwoodfuneral.com. Duane L Glade was born January 22, 1921 in Osceola County, near Ocheyedan, Iowa, to Arthur and Rose (Ostermann) Glade. He attended schools in the Ocheyedan area, graduating from Ocheyedan High School in 1939. Duane attended the University of Iowa, majoring in civil engineering for 3 years. Duane served in the Army Air Corps during World War II, as Captain and pilot of a B-24 bomber. He flew 85 bombing missions in the European Theater and among his many honors received the distinguished Flying Cross from President Harry Truman for landing his crippled plane safely and saving the lives of his crewmen. On January 22, 1950 he married Jewell Adams Hays in Ocheyedan, Iowa. She preceded him in death July 12, 2004. They moved to Cherokee, Iowa in 1955 where Duane worked for Scothorn Construction of Cherokee, Iowa and later for Van Buskirk Construction out of Sioux City, Iowa. He assisted in the building of the Rathbun Dam near Centerville, Iowa. Finally, he worked for the Cherokee County Department of Secondary Roads maintenance for 17 years, retiring in 1986. he enjoyed being outdoors and daily walked around Spring Lake Park. Survivors include a daughter, Judy Hays Buss, of Cherokee, Iowa; a son, Robert Glade, of Littleton, Colorado; granddaughters, Robin Adams-Hays, of Climax, Minnesota and Lindsey Glade, of Littleton, Colorado; sisters, La Vonne Dirks, and her husband, Lyle, of Ocheyedan, Iowa; Mavis Miller, of Lake Forest, California; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, brothers (Kenneth and Loren), sisters (Lillian Ostermann, Marge Butcher, Naomi Hill and Marie Pruett)2 |

| Memo (fam) | (1924) | Memo: [From the Ocheyedan, IA Centennial] Frederick Glade was born in Kolenfeld, Hanover, Germany in 1836. Dorothea Seehausen Glade was born in Mesmerode, Germany. Both came to America in 1853. Frederick traveled to Indiana to a community of German immigrants. Later, his parents also arrived in America. The Civil War was being fought, and Frederick enlisted. He served during the entire war in the cavalry. After the war he worked in a brick factory in Chicago. While there he met Dorothea. They were married in 1865, and farmed in Indiana. In 1883, Mr. & Mrs. Glade and their ten children (five boys and five girls) moved to Ocheyedan, Iowa. They arrived in Sibley, the nearest railroad town, and had to haul everything 14 miles cross-country to get to their land. They were able to rent a house on the farm across the road. The house consisted of three small bedrooms, a kitchen, and a pantry. Three carpenters stayed with them, so there were seventeen people for three beds and three straw ticks. The boys had to sleep outside in a wagon box. It was March, so it was quite cold. When the house was completed, it was one of the best in the community. Walls were plastered and back plastered. The outside was covered with lap siding, and the windows had green blinds. The house is still standing to this day. The girls had to twist hay for fuel and gather buffalo chips. The boys herded the cows on the prairie. The first summer the girls planted beans in the prairie sod by using an axe to chop holes in the sod and dropping in a few beans. They had a wonderful bean crop. More sod was broken every year. The first wheat for flour was taken to the mill at Spirit Lake, 30 miles away. After several years the railroad came to Ocheyedan. Three more sons were born into the Glade family in the next five years, bringing the total to thirteen children. Frederick and Dorothea helped establish the present Zion Lutheran congregation in Horton Township in 1887. The Glades observed their 60th wedding anniversary with an impressive service at the church; Frederick and Dorothea sat at the altar with seven sons, four daughters, and thirteen in-laws seated around them. Few unions last to see such an occasion. All thirteen children grew to adulthood and married. They were Fred, Wilhelmina Leckband, Dorothea Bremer, Louisa Hattendorf, Sophia Dorr, Mary Bremer, Henry, August, William, Chris, Herman, Albert and Arthur. The Glade homestead consisted of 320 acres. This was later divided into three farms. Herman had the south, Albert had the center, and Arthur had the north. Dorothea Glade died in 1925 at age 78, and Frederick Glade died in 1932 at age 95.4 |

Glade, 84, lifelong resident of Ocheyedan passed away Friday, June 4, 2004, at the Worthington, Minn. hospital after a brief illness. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Peters Lutheran Church in Ocheyedan. Burial will be in Ocheyedan Township Cemetery. Visitation will be 2 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present 5 to 7 p.m., at Andringa Funeral Home in Ocheyedan. Kenneth Warren Glade, the son of Arthur and Rose (Ostermann) Glade, was born on Nov. 17, 1919 on the Glade family farm in Horton Township. He attended parochial school in Horton and later graduated from Ocheyedan High School. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He married Alice Fisher at Milbank, S.D. on June 29, 1941. She preceded him in death in 1988. He had been a farmer and helped to construct the Ocheyedan Grain Elevator in 1955. He worked at the elevator for 28 years, retiring in 1983. Survivors include a daughter and her husband, Kathy and Gary Gonnerman of Humboldt, Iowa; a son and his wife, Steve and Marilyn Glade of Ocheyedan; two grandsons, Dustin and Lance, both of Ocheyedan; a long-time special friend, Rae Dass of Ocheyedan; a brother, Duane Glade of Cherokee, Iowa; two sisters, LaVonne and her husband, Lyle Dirks of Ocheyedan and Mavis Miller of Lake Forest, Calif.; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his wife, Alice, he was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Loren Glade; and four sisters, Lillian Ostermann, Marge Butcher, Naomi Hill and Marie Pruitt.6 |

Kerry married Karen Carlson Hellinga. He is the city maintenance and water supervisor for Ocheyedan. Karen has four children. Kim is married to George Hiveley, Jr. They live in Lake Park with their four children. George is employed at Style Craft in Milford, Iowa. Kris is married to Doug Van Hunnick. They live in Lake Park, and both work at Monfort in Worthington, Minnesota. Kelly is married to Dan Hartwig. They live in Ocheyedan, with their two daughters. Dan farms and does custom work. Kelly babysits. Lisa is married to Brad Noble, and they have three sons. Brad works on a hog confinement farm in Sioux Valley, Minnesota, wher Lisa babysits. Dwight lives in Ocheyedan, and works with Gregg Construction in Sibley. Tony lives in Ocheyedan, and works at Monfort in Worthington, Minnesota. Michael lives in Ocheyedan, and attends Iowa Lakes Community College in Estherville. He works for Greg Construction Sibley in the summer. Dana lives at home and is a senior at Sibley-Ocheyedan High School. Dana works at Village West in the summer. Dick and Marilyn have fourteen grandchildren.3 |

He was predeceased by : his parents, Richard Glade and Marilyn Glade (Leckband); and his brothers, Darren and Kevin. He is survived by : his wife Laura Glade of Ocheyedan, Iowa; his daughter Morgan Scott (Skyler) of Olathe, Kansas; and his siblings, Kerry (Karen), Dwight (Mitzi), Michael (Elise), Kim (George Hiveley), Kris, Kelly (Dan Hartwig), Lisa (Dale Carrigan) and Dana (Terry Butler). He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and other extended family. Visitation was held on Thursday, June 8th 2023 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Jurrens Funeral Home - Andringa Funeral Chapel (855 Main St, Ocheyedan, IA 51354). A funeral service will be held on Friday, June 9th 2023 at 10:30 AM at the St. Peter Lutheran Church (1075 Pine St, Ocheyedan, IA 51354).Ocheyedan, Iowa Tony Glade age 58 of Ocheyedan, Iowa died Tuesday, June 6, 2023, at VA Medical Center in Iowa City, Iowa. Funeral service will be 10:30 AM, Friday, June 9th at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Ocheyedan, IA, with Rev. Richard Milbrandt officiating. Burial will follow at Ocheyedan Township Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday, June 8th from 4:00 to 8:00 PM, with the family present at Jurrens Funeral Home, Andringa Chapel in Ocheyedan. Tony Douglas Glade was born January 7, 1965, in Worthington, Minnesota, the son of Richard and Marilyn (Leckband) Glade. He was raised in Ocheyedan, Iowa. He graduated from Ocheyedan High School in 1983. He entered the U.S. Army in 1984 and received his honorable discharge in 1986 and returned home to Ocheyedan. Tony was united in marriage to Laura J. Noble on August 3, 1991, at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Ocheyedan, IA. They welcomed a daughter, Morgan, after three years of marriage in 1994. Together they made their home in Ocheyedan while Tony worked at Swift in Worthington, MN, Rosenboom Machine & Tool and later, Polaris Industries, both in Spirit Lake, IA. In 2005 Tony was diagnosed with a brain tumor and in 2009 he became disabled and unable to work. Tony enjoyed watching the L.A. Rams football games. He was a music enthusiast and enjoyed playing his guitar. He also enjoyed muscle cars, going for walks, camping at the Lakes, and listening to the birds. Most of all he enjoyed visiting with friends and family. Tony was well-known for his sense of humor. He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Laura Glade of Ocheyedan, Iowa; a daughter, Morgan (Skyler) Scott of Olathe, Kansas; three brothers: Kerry (Karen), Dwight (Mitzi), Michael (Elise); five sisters: Kim (George Hiveley), Kris, Kelly (Dan Hartwig), Lisa (Dale Carrigan), and Dana (Terry Butler); many nieces, nephews and other extended family. He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Marilyn Glade and two brothers, Darren and Kevin.2 |
