Memo (fam)(21 Nov 1854)Memo: The following is from the Ocheyedan, IA Centennial Book of 1991: They left Hannover, Germany, approximately 1850, with three children. The middle child died near shore and was buried in Germany. In their 5 week sail boat trip the nursing baby became very ill and passed away. The mother dressed the baby for burial and covered the body with her prettiest white apron. They were told to put the baby on deck and they could see the baby one more time in the morning. Next morning the baby was gone. Buried at sea. Then the mother became very swollen from all the milk and desperately ill. The only way to solve the problem was for the husband to suck the milk. She was spared and soon returned to health. One daughter came with them to America. Five daughters and two more sons were born in America.6, 7

Memo10 Apr 2026Biography: Anna Dorothea Elisabeth Helm Drangmeister (1826–1911)

Anna Dorothea Elisabeth Helm was born in April 1826 in Prussia, Germany, during a time when much of central Europe was still recovering from the upheaval of the Napoleonic Wars. She grew up in a rural society where life revolved around family, church, and agricultural work, and where opportunities for advancement were often limited.

Around 1845, she married Henry Drangmeister, and together they began building a family in their homeland. Like many young couples of that era, they faced the realities of limited land, economic pressure, and the challenges of supporting a growing household.

Seeking a better future, Anna and Henry made the difficult decision to emigrate to the United States. In 1854, they departed from Germany with their young children and arrived in New Orleans on November 20 after a long and perilous journey across the Atlantic aboard the ship Bessel.

The voyage was marked by profound hardship and loss. During the crossing, three of their children died—tragic events that were all too common during long sea journeys of the 19th century. Family accounts describe the heartbreak of losing a baby at sea, prepared for burial by her mother and then committed to the ocean. Anna herself became seriously ill during the voyage, weakened by grief and physical strain, but ultimately recovered. These experiences illustrate both the dangers of immigration and the resilience required to endure them.

After arriving in America, the family traveled north, eventually settling in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, before moving west to Illinois. This migration reflected a broader pattern among German immigrants seeking farmland and stable communities in the Midwest.

Anna’s life in America was centered on her role as a wife and mother. She raised a large family, including her daughter Marie Dorothea (Friedricka), who would later marry into the Bremer family. Daily life would have involved cooking, preserving food, sewing clothing, tending to children, and assisting with the many tasks required to sustain a farm household.

Her life was not without sorrow. Several of her children died in infancy or early childhood, reflecting the harsh realities of the time before modern medicine. Yet she also witnessed her family grow and establish roots in their new country.

Anna lived through a period of great transformation in the United States. She experienced the expansion of settlements into the Midwest, the development of farming communities, and the turmoil of the American Civil War. Though her daily life remained centered on home and family, these broader events shaped the world around her.

After the death of her husband in 1895, Anna continued to live with her children, a common arrangement in extended families of that era. By 1910, she was living in Crown Point, Indiana, with her daughter, spending her later years surrounded by family.

Anna Dorothea Elisabeth Helm Drangmeister died on August 21, 1911, at approximately 85 years of age. Her death followed a period of declining health, and she passed away peacefully after a long life marked by endurance and devotion to her family. She was buried at St. John’s Lutheran Church of Eagle Lake cemetery in Illinois, a place closely tied to her family’s history.

Her life spanned an era of extraordinary change—from early 19th-century Prussia to a modernizing America. She endured the hardships of immigration, the loss of children, and the demands of frontier life, yet helped establish a family whose descendants would continue to grow and prosper.

Anna Dorothea Elisabeth Helm Drangmeister’s story is one of quiet strength. Though her life was largely centered within the home, her resilience, faith, and perseverance were foundational to the success of future generations.
