I give to my son William Jennings, the lot I bought of Thomas Shaw, joining to ye land my house stands on. I give to my son Samuel Jennings, my house and home lot, with all the housings thereon, to he possessed by him when he shall be twenty-one years of age. And the rest of my lands, meadows, and commonage my will is that they be equally divided betwixt my said three sons, John, William and Samuel, and in like manner all my Military Arms. If either of my sons die without issue, the estate be equally divided to my surviving sons. I leave to my wife, Ann, full and free possession of my house and home lot. with all improvements, until my son Samuel shall come of age, if she shall live a widow, But if my said son shall die, and my wife should marry again, then when my son William shall come of age; and whosoever she shall bring into ye said house shall make ye houses and all other buildings when they leave them, as they were at their first entering upon them. I give to my daughter, Ann James, 10 shillings, to be paid by executor. I give to my daughter, Johannah Haines, 10 shillings. I give to my daughter, Sarah Jennings, a feather bed and bolster, with furniture thereto, and soe much more out of my estate as shall make up the bed and furniture to be Twenty-five Pounds. I make my wife executor of this will, to pay out all my said legacies and to dispose of all ye rest of my estate that I have not herein given, as shall seem best unto her. | Note | 23 Jan 1955 | Note: 23 Jan 1955. On 23 Jan 1955 Eva Irene Jennings interviewed Lewis M Jennings and wrote the following information. Three families came out together from Wales, England to Portsmouth, Virginia and settled on the Cumberland River as farmers. Their names were McLean (he was not sure of the spelling), McKinney and Jennings. There were three Jennings brothers, and each of them had three children. The first three whose names he remembers were: BENONAH, who had three sons -- our grandfather, Cyrus K., Elliott and Cary; ISRAEL, whose daughter Martha was the mother of William Jennings Bryan and therefore Martha and our grandfather were first cousins. ABRAHAM, the names of whose children he could not remember. From Virginia our family traveled by covered wagon, stopping for a time in Maryland; then on to Brown County, Ohio. Our grandfather, Cyrus K. was a Charter Member, as was Ruth Long's Grandfather Kelly, of Samuel McAdams Post 479 of the G.A.R. at Sorento, Illinois. He lived to be 92 and is buried in Nettleton, Arkansas. His wife, our grandmother was Sara Jane Cornelius, is buried near Old Ripley, Illinois. Uncle Lewis believed that our great grandfather, Benonah Jennings was probably the son of Abraham. He also said that our Great, Great Uncle, James McKinney, had a very active part in Braddock's Defeat as a member of the Virginia Blues Regiment and that one of our ancestors -- probably Silas Jennings -- was also a member of that famed regiment. He said most of the male members of the family were given Biblical names. I have a vivid recollection of hearing Grandfather Jennings tell of "Running the Gauntlet" to avoid being taken prisoner by the Confederate Army so I inquired as to the battle in which this occurred. Uncle Lewis said it was the Battle of Peach Tree Ridge when Longstreet was trying to retake Nashville. Our grandfather was assigned to the rear guard on the road to Franklin to hold back the Confederates until his outfit was well entrenched. When the Confederates reached the Rear Guard they did not have sufficient food to take many prisoners so lined up with bayonets and allowed those Union Men who could run through without being wounded to do so. My grandfather cut loose his musket and other gear so he might run faster, and made it but not without suffering three small slashes, scars of which he retained the rest of his life. He did not report in as being wounded, merely got a bandage and continued so no wound shows on his record. Uncle Lewis, being 80 years old, was a bit excited by my interest and talked very rapidly, but I believe the above covers all the information I was able to secure. He was not sure as to the spelling of the name of my great grandfather "BENONAH" but said it appears in the Old Testament. E. Irene Jennings.3 |

| Note | 26 Jun 1944 | Note: 26 Jun 1944. The following infomation is from Charles T Rinkel, Jr: Notes from a letter from my grandfather, Martin Luther Jennings, to my mother, Lela Cora Jennings Rinkel, November 26, 1944. "My Father's name was Cyrus K Jennings. He was born in Indiana near Indianapolis and in a neighborhood called Stotts Creek. His father's name was Bennonia and they first came to Illinois settling in Cumberland County and later moved to Bond County. My father first married Rachel Hannan. She died and left no children. So he enlisted in the Civil War, served 4 years and 8 months and after returning married Sarah Jane Cornelius, my mother, and raised 6 children -- 3 boys and 3 girls. Two girls are still living and the last time I heard anything about Louis he was still living. As to Bryan, his father and my grandfather Jennings were cousins. That would make me a third cousin. But I never thought enough of him to care for his kinship. You were born in Clay County, Ill and I am the only living witness. I can get you a Birth certificate. I got Irene one about 2 years ago." Chuck's note: 1) The Bryan referred to in this letter is William Jennings Bryan. 2) Martin Luther Jennings, my grandfather, is the man who commented upon the death of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, "If he isn't in hell there isn't any need of having one.".4 |

| Obituary | 25 Jan 1955 | Obituary: The obituary for Martin was recorded on 25 Jan 1955. M L JENNINGS RITES TODAY AT HILLSBORO (Illinois) Native of Sorento Dies at Quincy S. and S. Home Martin Luther JENNINGS, who was a native of the Sorento community and also lived there and at Hillsboro several years, died at eight o'clock Saturday morning at the Soldiers and Sailors home in Quincy. The body was brought to the Carroll funeral home in Hillsboro where he had made arrangements for his funeral before he entered the Quincy home a year ago. Mr. Jennings was ill about ten days of infirmaties of advanced age. He was 85 years old on November 18. Mr Jennings was born on a farm in Bond county, near Sorento on November 18, 1869, a son of Cyrus K and Sarah Jane CORNELIUS JENNINGS. He was reared in the Sorento community before the village of Sorento was established and when the old Sorento mine was sunk he worked in that mine. He lived at Flora, Ill., for some years and it was there that he was married to Miss Eva Priseilla RICE of Flora in May 1895. About nine years later, they moved to Sorento, where Mrs. JENNINGS died on January 23, 1906. He afterwards lived at Edwardsville for a time and then came to Hillsboro to make his home with his sister, the late Mrs. Roxie LONG, mother of Mayor Joe LONG. After her death, he remained here for a time and then went to Peoria where he resided for some years and came back to Hillsboro for a short time before entering the Quincy home. In his later years, he spent considerable time as a salesman of trees and shrubbery. He enjoyed writing poems and songs and some of the music published a few years ago contained words written by him. He belonged to a group in Peoria of poets and music writers and he greatly enjoyed this association. He was a veteran of the Spanish-American War and belonged to the Spanish War Veterans of Foreign Wars. Surviving are three daughters: Mrs. E. Irene JENNINGS of Chicago; Lela, wife of Charles T. RINKEL of Pittsburg, Kans., and Luella, wife of Louis NEUHAUS of Bethalto, Ill. A sister, Mrs. Margaret HALEY lives in Chicago and a brother, Lewis JENNINGS resides in Grafton, Mo. There are two grandchildren -- Rev. Charles T. RINKEL of Irwin, Ia., and Miss Alice NEUHAUS of Bethalto and a great-granddaughter, Pamela Sue RINKEL of Irwin, Ia. He was preceded in death by a brother, Cary JENNINGS of Nettleton, Ark., and two sister, Mrs. Roxie LONG of Hillsboro and Mrs. Carey GREEN of Montana. Funeral services were held at half past one Monday afternoon at the Carrol funeral home in Hillsboro, Rev. George CRANFILL of Hillsboro officiating and interment was made in Sunnyside cemetery at Sorento beside the grave of his departed wife.12 |

| Memo | 10 Apr 2026 | Biography: Mary Frances Jennings (1856–1938) Mary Frances Jennings was born on February 23, 1856, in Sorento, Bond County, Illinois, into a rural Midwestern community that was still developing from its frontier roots. Her early childhood coincided with a period of mounting national tension that soon erupted into the American Civil War. Although she was only a young girl during the war, its effects would have been felt in her community through economic strain, the absence of men, and the uncertainty that touched nearly every household. She grew up in the home of her parents, William Elliott Jennings and Frances Caroline Cornelius, in Bond County. Life in this region during the mid-19th century revolved around farming, seasonal labor, and strong family networks. Children were expected to contribute to household work from an early age, and Mary’s upbringing would have prepared her for the demanding responsibilities of adulthood. By 1870, Mary appears in the census in the household of George Washington Bentley, Jr, suggesting an early connection that would later become significant. The post-war years, known as Reconstruction, were a time of rebuilding and adjustment across the country. In Illinois, agriculture remained central to daily life, but the expansion of railroads and markets was beginning to change how farmers operated and sold their goods. On October 26, 1882, Mary married Henry Palmer Manning in Bond County. She was 26 years old, entering marriage during a time when the United States was transitioning from a rural, agrarian society toward greater industrialization. Together they had two daughters, Frances Jane and Laura Palmer Manning. As a mother, Mary would have been responsible for maintaining the household, raising children, and supporting the family’s livelihood, often under physically and emotionally demanding conditions. Family accounts suggest that Henry later left the marriage, and no formal record of divorce or death has been found. This would have placed Mary in a difficult position. In the late 19th century, a woman separated from her husband often faced social and economic hardship, with limited legal protections or independent income. Her resilience is evident in the fact that she continued to raise her children and rebuild her life. On October 30, 1898, Mary married John R. Blackburn in Clay County, Illinois, linking her life to another established family in the region. Around the turn of the century, the United States was experiencing rapid change, including the rise of industry, improved transportation, and new technologies such as the telephone and electric lighting, though such advancements often reached rural areas slowly. The 1900 census shows the blended household, including her children from her first marriage, living in Hoosier Township, Clay County, where John worked as a sawmill operator—an occupation tied to the continued development and use of natural resources in the region. By 1910, Mary was living in Flora, Illinois, and the following year, on April 13, 1911, she married George Washington Bentley, Jr, returning to a connection from earlier in her life. This period marked the Progressive Era in American history, a time of social reform, modernization, and growing attention to public welfare. For Mary, however, life remained grounded in family, home, and community. During her later years, Mary witnessed profound changes in the nation. She lived through the World War I, which brought global conflict and social change, and the Great Depression, which caused widespread economic hardship. Rural communities like Sorento were not immune, as falling crop prices and financial instability affected many families. Yet she remained in the community where she had spent most of her life. Mary Frances Jennings died on March 11, 1938, in Sorento, Illinois, at the age of 82, and was buried in Sunnyside Cemetery. Her life spanned more than eight decades of American history, from the pre-Civil War frontier through industrialization and economic upheaval. Through multiple marriages, the raising of children, and the challenges she faced, her story reflects resilience, adaptability, and the enduring strength of family ties in changing times. |
