She was born Feb. 7, 1922, at Hubbard, Nebraska to Henry Mads and Hanna Amanda Mogensen Kundsen. She married Chris Mortensen on Jan. 20, 1944, and the couple became members of the Christian Congregation of Jehovahs Witnesses in 1977. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband on July 20, 1994; a brother, Don Knudsen; a sister, Elsie Thomas; and a grandson, James Caleb Mortensen on Sept. 3, 2005. Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Ron and Ann Mortensen of Pottsville and Gary and Cathy Mortensen of Reeds Spring, Mo.; a brother, Ralph Knudsen of Fremont, Neb.; a sister, Juanita Nordgren of Springdale; three granddaughters, Casey Mortensen Brown of Hector and Michelle Schmid and Heather Satchel both of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and seven great-grandchildren. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2007, at the Shinn Chapel with Ken Morphis officiating. Burial will be in Rest Haven Memorial Park under the direction of Shinn Funeral Service. Pallbearers will be Jim Amey, Neil Webb, Loyd Cates, Dan Dennis, Dave Kibler and Carl Apple. He was born June 6, 1926, in Dysart, son of Vernon and Rose Messer Knupp. On Feb. 12, 1950, he married Doris Matthias at St. Johns Lutheran Church, Denver. He graduated from Dysart High School in 1943 and farmed the family farm east of Dysart until 1985. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and the Dysart Lions Club. Survived by: his wife; a daughter, Cheryl (Stan) Ames of Beaverton, Ore.; three sons, Kevin (Katy) of Madison, Ala., and Michael (Amy) and Jeffrey (Marcia), both of Dysart; a sister, Irene (David) Wieck of Dysart; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by: his parents; his stepfather, Leo Blough; and a sister, Dorothy. Services: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Zion Lutheran Church, with burial in Dysart Cemetery. Public visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Overton Funeral Home, Dysart. Memorial fund: has been established. Condolences may be left at www.overtonservice.com.²

Survivors: wife, Carolyn; sons, Delvin and wife Melissa and Rod and wife Lori, all of Beatrice; daughters, Bernita Morgan, Kari McPeek and husband Tom, Connie Heidbrink and husband Dave, Cammie Hellmer and husband Terry and Patty Kaufman and husband Paul, all of Beatrice; 14 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; brother, Loren Koch and wife Susan of Marysville, Calif.; sister, Wanda Hammond and husband Bob of Littleton, Colo.; brother-in-law, Jack Wolf of Princeton, Ill.; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Katherine (Lottman) Koch; brother, Don Koch; sister, Mavis Wolf. At his request there will be no services. Cremation has taken place. Marie was born Nov. 5, 1913 in Trempealeau and was the third of six children born to Richard John and Anna (Schiller) Koch. Her father immigrated to the United States from Germany in the 19th Century and in 1898 served with the U. S. Navy in the Spanish-American War. In addition to Trempealeau, while the children were young, the Koch family resided in several areas of the U. S., including Perth Amboy, N.J.; Kearney, Neb.; St. Petersburg, Fla.; Fergus Falls, Minn.; and the Roberts-Hammond area where Mr. Koch farmed and operated a hemp mill. Marie attended a country school in the Town of Hammond. On Sept. 9, 1939, in Minneapolis, Marie married Donald Piepho, who had worked in the Civilian Conservation Corp in the 1930s, served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, and later was employed by Honeywell. During the early years of their marriage they lived in Robbinsdale. They then moved to North Minneapolis where they resided for over 50 years. Marie and Don became the parents of three children: James, Margaret and Richard. Marie was a member of St. Austin's Catholic Community in Minneapolis. She was very proud of her family and served delicious home-prepared food to them and friends. She was involved in politics and had an extensive collection of post cards which had been mailed to her over the years by friends who traveled in all parts of the world. She truly enjoyed ballroom dancing and card playing. She and Don always attended the reunions of Don's World War II Navy Unit. Marie is survived by her son, Richard (Karen) Piepho of Brooklyn Park, Minn; grandchildren, Robert Hilger of Camarillo, Calif., Mike Hilger of Park City, Utah, Patrick Hilger of Circle Pines, Minn., Rebecca St. Martin of Minneapolis and Daniel Piepho of Brooklyn Park; six great-grandchildren; brother Ted (Joan) Koch of Shinkleton, Calif.; son-in-law Don Hilger of Minneapolis; sisters-in-law, Mary Johnson Koch of Baldwin and Marie Koch of Strafford, Mo.; nieces in the local area, Mary Anna (Koch) Forsythe of Roberts, Jean (Koch) Lindus of Hammond; and many other relatives and friends. Marie was preceded in death by her husband Donald Piepho; two children, James Piepho and Margaret Hilger; daughter-in-law Linda Piepho; her parents, Richard John and Anna Koch; and four brothers, Edward, Richard C., Bert and Fred Koch. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Feb. 19, in the Du Schane Chapel of the Washburn-McReavy Funeral Home in Robbinsdale, with Father Gregory Welch of St. Austin's Church officiating. A eulogy was given by Robert Hilger. Interment was in Gethsemane Cemetery in New Hope, Minn. Casketbearers were Robert Hilger, Patrick Hilger, Michael Hilger, Rebecca St. Martin, Carl Golob and Daniel Piepho.¹
