[from Daily Progress, Charlottesville, VA] Marlin Ewald Meese of Palmyra died Monday at the University of Virginia Medical Center after a brief illness. He was in many ways an ordinary man who was also an extraordinary husband and father. He will be greatly missed by innumerable family and friends who loved him dearly. Marlin was born in 1932 in Faribault, Minnesota, third of four sons of Alton Meese and Alfreida (Piepho) Meese. He attended the public schools in Faribault, and was a member of the Boy Scouts. As a scout, he sometimes served as an usher at University of Minnesota football games. After graduating from high school, he enlisted in the Navy, where he served as a radioman and electronics specialist on a P2V Neptune surveillance aircraft, in Patrol Squadron One, based in Whidbey Island, Washington. During the Korean War, Squadron One deployed to Okinawa, from which the Neptunes patrolled the straits of Formosa and waters off Korea. After honorable discharge from the Navy in 1955, Marlin returned to Minnesota and attended what was then known as Mankato State College on the GI Bill, graduating with a degree in Mathematics in 1959. He met Rose Stegmaier in Makato, and they married in December of 1958. In late 1959, Marlin took a job as an engineering draftsman for the Federal Bureau of Reclamation, in the Department of the Interior. After stints in Ogden, Utah and Sacramento, California, he transferred to the Federal Highway Administration, where he served as a real estate acquisition specialist, implementing federal standards governing the acquisition of land for the construction of the Interstate Highway System. He served in FHWA district offices in St. Paul, Minnesota, Providence, Rhode Island, and Phoenix, Arizona. He ended his Federal service in the FHWA headquarters in Washington, D.C., living in Fairfax, Virginia. While in Fairfax, he entered the Knights of Columbus, and ultimately advanced to Third Degree Knight. In 1994, Marlin and Rose retired to Palmyra, Virginia, at Lake Monticello. An accomplished craftsman, woodworker, and amateur electrician, Marlin spent much of his retirement on various remodeling projects at home and elsewhere. He also participated in numerous projects for Habitat for Humanity in Fluvanna County and, with Rose, volunteered for the National Park Service at Humpback Rock Farm on the Blue Ridge Parkway. He was a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. Throughout his adult life Marlin focused on pursuing his lifelong dream of "getting married and providing for his family." He was first and foremost a family man, who loved his wife and children unconditionally. He cherished his grandchildren, who knew him as "Gramps Marlin" and "Grampsy." He was always quick to lend a helping hand to friends and family in need. (Once, clad only in a bath towel, he rushed to a neighbor's house and doused a fire consuming a new and poorly-assembled gas grill.). He loved to read the paper, particularly the comics, enjoyed a good meal, was fond of cars and an excellent driver, and he usually wore a hat. In his younger years he enjoyed swimming, particularly in Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island and later in the family pool in Arizona. He liked romantic comedies, because they had happy endings and read numerous Robert Ludlum spy novels. He was a gentle soul, did not take himself too seriously, and he lived according to the golden rule. He was preceded in death by his mother, father, and three brothers, Linford, Allan and Curtis. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Rose Meese of Palmyra; his children, Alan Meese and his wife, Kelly Metcalf-Meese, of Williamsburg and Theresa Meese Landow and her husband, Timothy Landow, of Palmyra. Also surviving are four grandchildren, Michael and Julia Meese and Joseph and Nikolaus Landow. Funeral services will be handled by Hill and Wood Funeral Home in Charlottesville. A funeral mass will be held at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Palmyra 2 p.m. Tuesday, December 29, 2009. Donations in memory of Marlin can be made to the Lake Monticello Fire and Rescue Squad, 10 Slice Road, Palmyra, Virginia 22963 or to the Lake Monticello Police Department, 855 Jefferson Dr., Palmyra, Virginia 22963.2 |

| Obituary | 27 Jul 2001 | Obituary: The obituary for Emma was recorded the Chicago Tribune in Chicago, Cook, Illinois, United States on 27 Jul 2001. Emma Schweer, the longtime Crete Township tax collector who, at 105, was widely believed to be the oldest elected politician in America, died Wednesday, July 25, in St. James Hospital and Health Centers in Chicago Heights. She succeeded her husband in the post in 1965 and was re-elected 17 times, most recently in April. She continued to be an institution even after her position became less significant when Will County took over tax collection duties in the 1970s. Though the position was unpaid and largely ceremonial, the people of Crete Township considered it a tradition to continue electing her to the office, said Crete Village Administrator David Wallace. “There are just some things you don’t change,” he said. ” I think the type of person that Emma Schweer was warranted that. I think it commanded respect, and I think that’s why it lasted as long as it did.” With her husband, she was the co-owner of Schweer Gas & Appliance on Main Street, learned how to fly in the 1930s and volunteered to train pilots during World War II. Though her family said she was driven by a gritty, do-it-yourself mentality, almost everyone in town remarked that Mrs. Schweer was an elegant woman in every respect. “I was probably 5 or 6 years old and I met her when we were paying our light bill at the store she operated. She was a very proper figure, always very businesslike, always dressed impeccably,” said Crete Mayor Mike Einhorn, recalling an encounter some 45 years before. “She’s been pretty much constant,” he added. Mrs. Schweer was born in Iowa in 1896. Her family moved to a farm near Crete when she was 4. She graduated from Trinity Lutheran School in town at a time when classes were still conducted in German, and she attended business college in Chicago Heights. She met her future husband, Art Schweer, at a local roller rink. After working briefly as a secretary for an insurance company in Chicago, she married him in 1923. Partners in business, politics They went into business together, first in a small wooden building on Main Street and later by branching into operation of an airport in Homewood. She served as his deputy when he held the township collector’s post from 1933 until his death in 1965, and said she took it over afterward out of respect for him. For a few years, Mrs. Schweer was responsible for typing tax bills, collecting real estate and personal property taxes and shuttling tax revenue back and forth between township taxing bodies and the county seat in Joliet. State law required the post remain even when it became unnecessary in Crete Township in the 1970s. After that, “her position and running kind of took on a life of its own. It just evolved,” said Einhorn. “She kept doing it. She could have just walked away, but didn’t. Not only did she run, but she won. It was probably at that point that she became somewhat of an institution.” Out of respect for Mrs. Schweer–a staunch Republican who filled her white frame house with elephant figurines–the local Democratic Party has not slated anyone to run for collector since the late-1980s, township Democratic Chairwoman Norenna Schumacker told the Tribune in April. “She was a symbol of consistency and loyalty,” said township Republican Chairman Joseph Battaglia. “She gave a lot of pride to the members of the Republican Central Committee. She gave a lot of substance to the Republican Party.” Still, she had to be talked into running again at 101. Crete Township Assessor Ronald Koelling said that to avoid a similar argument this year, he nominated her at the township Republican caucus last January without first telling her. “A big cheer went up from the audience–there were probably 300 people. She got a big round of applause,” he said. “And she was nominated without question.” Pride in the post If she was reluctant to run a few years ago, it was not because she disliked the job, said her great-niece Jeannine Aull, adding that Mrs. Schweer was always proud of the post. “She was really just a little farm girl when she grew up, but when she got involved in picking up [her husband’s] term when he died, that’s when she really began to shine,” Aull said. “She had to make her own decisions. The numbers, the spreadsheets, that was all a part of her household.” Interviewed in April, Mrs. Schweer even hinted at considering another run in four more years: “I don’t think I’ll be around by then,” she said. “But if I am and they put my name on the ballot again, I just might give it a shot.” Visitation will be held from 2 to 9 p.m. Saturday in Hirsch Funeral Homes, 507 Exchange St., Crete.
