Letter One:
Dear Brother and Sister in Law,

We are all well and we hope that you are too, dear Brother. You wrote that you might be able to send us a little money this winter, how about it, couldn't you do that, as I need a lot of money for new year and I do not know from where to get it as everything is so expensive. Can you imagine the cow alone cost four hundred Mark now and I would like to keep it because I have enough fodder ... if only I can, dear Brother, for I have bought it on ... and will probably do it again when I can. And now a friendly greeting from us all, dear Brother, also greet your wife from us and live well.

Letter Two, written February 22nd, 1911
Dear Brother and Sister in Law,

I will now congratualte you on the occasion of your birthday, dear Brother, and hope you may live well in the new year, so we all wish you. I have long waited to hear from you, but we have now waited long in vain, you might write to say how you are and how ... or is, for I must adjust according to that, dear Brother. How is you winter, here we have hardly had nay winter yet, and hardly any snow, but lots of rain and wind this winter and that is very unhealthy - it is a long time since we have had any snow in the winter, for probably that is also the reason that no longer have warm summers. Now I have no more news.

And now a kind greeting from us all, you brother and family of Coter (?).

From April 1, 1938 to Feb 1940 they lived in an old garage belonging to Pete and Marie Lynott (Lillian's sister) at 902 Rock St., Sioux City, IA. To earn money, he raised chickens, raised and sold vegetables from their garden; she returned to work at Baker's. From 13 Sep 1939 to 5 Sep 1940 he worked for the WPA in Sioux City, IA as a laborer ($52/month). From Feb 1940 to Sep 1940 they lived in a house at 2128 Dewey St, Sioux City, IA, which they bought for $400 (borrowed $350 against his life insurance policy). They moved to Los Angeles, CA, arriving on 9 Sep 1940, where he worked for American Awning Co, Santa Monica, CA ($20/week). Memo (fam)From Jun 1945 to Apr 1952Post-WW2: In Jun 1945, with WWII nearly over, Howard and Lillian decided to move back to Iowa and go farming. They stayed with Pete and Marie Lynott in Sioux City for a few months. In Nov 1945 they moved in with Earl and Vera Mortensen on their farm near Anthon, IA. On 3 Dec 1945 they bought a farm and applied for a loan from the Federal Land Bank. The farm was 120 acres located in Section 25 of Kedron Twsp, Woodbury Co, IA. (Located east and a little north of Anthon Iowa.) On 1 Mar 1946 they moved to that farm and stayed there until 1 Mar 1952. They sold the farm, sold most of their belonging at a farm auction, packed their remaining belongings into a trailer which they towed behind them to Los Angeles. Photo4, 12

Memo (fam)Mar 1960The Return to Los Angeles: Howard drove the entire distance himself, with only a few hours rest, arriving 2 or 3 days later -- this was before interstates. After arriving in LA, they stayed with his sister and family, May and Elmer Brown at 2400 Elm Grove St, Los Angeles, CA, then they found a rental house and moved to 2949 Partridge, Los Angeles, CA for about three weeks. During this time he worked for Lockheed Aircraft, again as a riveter. Too many changes had happened in California since 1945 and they were not happy there, so they packed up their belonging in a trailer and moved back to Iowa, again driving non-stop. They arrived back in Sioux City exactly 5 weeks after they had left, and only hours before the bridge into Sioux City from Nebraska was closed because of flooding. (I remember arriving late at night, and seeing nothing but water on both sides of the road when lightning would flash).
They lived briefly with Pete & Marie Lynott, and then moved to a second story apartment at 1922 W 5th St, Sioux City, IA. During this period, he worked for Swift & Co as a laborer, and she worked for Aalfs-Baker Mfg. Co, 1007 Fourth St, Sioux City as a seamstress. On 17 Feb 1953 they purchased their 2nd farm (120 acres) located in Sections 6 & 7, Grant Twsp, Woodbury Co Iowa (between Anthon and Climbing Hill, IA). They lived on this farm until 1 Mar 1960. During bad crop years, he worked for Swift & Co, and she worked for Hovland Mfg. Co, both in Sioux City to supplement their income. Photo4, 12

Memo10 Apr 2026Biography: Lillian Mortensen (1912–1981)

Lillian Mortensen was born on July 21, 1912, in Sioux City, Iowa, at a time when America was entering the modern age. Automobiles were becoming more common, electricity was spreading, and industry was reshaping daily life. Yet her upbringing remained closely tied to the traditions of immigrant farming families, rooted in hard work, faith, and community.

Her childhood spanned a period of dramatic national change, including World War I, which unfolded during her early years. Though far from the battlefields of Europe, Midwestern communities felt the war through economic shifts, patriotic efforts, and the loss of young men. The postwar years brought both optimism and instability, culminating in the agricultural downturn of the 1920s that hit farm families particularly hard.

By 1930, as a young woman, Lillian was working as a machine operator—evidence of the growing role of women in the industrial workforce. Her early adulthood coincided with the Great Depression, one of the most difficult economic periods in American history. Jobs were scarce, wages were low, and families often relied on multiple sources of income to survive. Lillian’s work in manufacturing and her later efforts to support her household reflect the resilience required during these years.

In 1936, she married Howard Taft Cash, and together they began building a life amid ongoing hardship. Their early married years were marked by frequent moves and modest living conditions, including time spent in a converted garage and reliance on small-scale farming and garden production to supplement income. These experiences were typical of many American families struggling to recover from the Depression.

In 1940, they moved to California, joining a broader migration westward in search of opportunity. This move coincided with the buildup to World War II, during which Southern California became a major center of defense production. While her husband worked as a riveter helping build aircraft, Lillian managed the household and raised her young family during a time of rationing, uncertainty, and national unity.

Following the war, like many families seeking stability, Lillian and Howard returned to farming in Iowa. The postwar years were a time of transition in American agriculture, with increasing mechanization and consolidation making small farming more challenging. Their eventual move back and forth between Iowa and California reflects both the opportunities and uncertainties of that era.

Throughout the 1950s and 1960s—years marked by prosperity, the growth of suburbia, and the tensions of the Cold War—Lillian remained centered on family life. She contributed to household income when needed, worked as a seamstress, and helped maintain the family through both good times and difficult ones. Her life bridged two very different Americas: the rural, agrarian world of her youth and the increasingly modern, mobile society of mid-century America.

After her husband’s death in 1968, Lillian continued to adapt, relocating between Missouri and Colorado. These later years coincided with a rapidly changing country, including the social upheavals of the 1960s and 1970s and the technological advances that were reshaping everyday life.

She was remembered as a devoted mother and an excellent cook, someone who provided not only materially for her family but also created a sense of warmth and stability. Her life reflected the quiet strength of many women of her generation—working when needed, supporting their families through economic hardship, and adapting to constant change without losing their core values.

Lillian Mortensen died on April 10, 1981, in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Having lived through two world wars, the Great Depression, and the transformation of America into a modern global power, she left behind a legacy rooted in perseverance, family, and the enduring strength of everyday life.

Memo10 Apr 2026Biography: Rasmus Mortensen (1861–1944)

Rasmus Mortensen was born on November 5, 1861, in Haarby, Denmark, in the midst of profound change across Europe. His early childhood coincided with the Second Schleswig War, a conflict that resulted in Denmark losing significant territory and contributed to economic hardship and national uncertainty. For many Danish families, including those in rural communities like Haarby, these conditions encouraged emigration in search of better opportunity.

Raised in a traditional Lutheran farming society, Rasmus grew up in a culture shaped by craftsmanship, discipline, and faith. By the time he reached adulthood, Denmark was experiencing population pressure and limited economic mobility, especially for younger sons. In 1887, at age 25, he joined the great wave of Scandinavian emigration to America, traveling through England and arriving in Boston before continuing west to Iowa. His journey was part of a larger migration that reshaped the American Midwest, bringing skilled laborers and farmers from Northern Europe.

Settling in Iowa, Rasmus entered a region that was rapidly developing due to railroads, agriculture, and growing towns. He became a cabinet maker and fine carpenter—trades that required precision, patience, and artistry. His skills placed him in demand during a period when communities were expanding and buildings—homes, businesses, and public structures—were being constructed across the region.

In 1890, he became a naturalized U.S. citizen, formally joining a nation that was then entering its industrial peak. That same year, he married Anna Karine Johansen, beginning a large family that would span generations. Their life together unfolded during a time of both opportunity and hardship, as America moved through cycles of economic expansion and recession, including the Panic of 1893, which severely impacted workers and small businesses across the country.

Rasmus’s craftsmanship extended beyond ordinary construction. He contributed to notable projects in Sioux City, including work on the Orpheum Theater and the maintenance of the city hall clock—evidence of both his skill and reputation. These contributions placed him within the broader story of American urban development during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when cities were investing in public buildings, entertainment venues, and civic identity.

His life also reflected the mobility common among working families of the time. He moved between Iowa, South Dakota, and even New York for a period, following opportunities where they arose. By the early 20th century, he had established his home in what is now North Sioux City, South Dakota, where he built his own house and continued his trade well into his later years.

Rasmus lived through extraordinary global and national events. During World War I, many immigrants faced questions of identity and loyalty, though Danish Americans generally integrated smoothly into American society. The postwar years brought economic growth followed by the devastating impact of the Great Depression, which affected craftsmen and laborers as construction slowed and jobs became scarce. Despite this, records show that he continued working into his seventies—an indication of both necessity and dedication to his trade.

By the time of World War II, Rasmus was in his eighties, witnessing another global conflict that involved the country he had adopted decades earlier. One of his sons served overseas, connecting his family directly to the war effort.

He died in April 1944 in Stevens (now North Sioux City), South Dakota, having lived more than eight decades across two continents. His life story reflects the classic immigrant narrative: leaving a homeland shaped by limitation, building a skilled trade in America, raising a large family, and contributing quietly but meaningfully to the communities in which he lived. Through craftsmanship, perseverance, and adaptability, he helped lay both literal and figurative foundations for future generations.

Richard "Dick" Darle Mortenson, passed away peacefully in his sleep at the age of 85, in the early morning of August 22nd in Ellensburg, Washington.
Dick was born in Sioux City, Iowa on May 8, 1933, to Rose Knight and Rudolph Mortenson. His youth was spent in Northwest Iowa until he was called to military service for the US Army in Korea from 1953 to 1955. Upon his return to civilian life in Iowa, Dick began his career and married Carolyn Jean Goodwin in June of 1958.
In 1962, he made the largest move of his life from Iowa to Washington state to begin his 30-year finance career with The Boeing Company. After he retired in 1992, he enjoyed camping, fishing, and collecting marbles and antiques. In 2004 he moved to Ellensburg, Washington to be close to his daughter Cinda and her family.
Dick is survived by his four children: Cinda Kohler (Ron), Vicki Hall (Lee), Gregg Mortenson, and Pam Turk (Jeff); his six grand-children: Keesha Kohler Poyer (Bradey) Korey White (Erin), Keeley Kohler Lange (Jeremy), Shanlee White Lindgren (Brian), Breanna Kelsey, and Chelsie Turk; his eleven great-grand-children: Reegan Lange, Keeana Lange, Cohen White, Jereson Lange, Callie White, McKenzee Poyer, Landen Lindgren, Cason White, Revel Lange, Delanee Poyer, Keegan White, and his sister
Bella Charmaine Ingram.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Bob, and sister, Bonnie. We will all miss him tremendously. His unconditional love, steady support, and quiet humor provided us all with a foundation for our lives
A private celebration of life will be held on Sunday, September 16th at 1 PM.
