She was born at home in Tyler, MN on August 11, 1917. She was the daughter of Kris and Emma Sandager. She married Donald C. Piepho on October 13, 1939 at First English Lutheran Church in Faribault. Donald passed away May 10th, 2001. Visitation will be held at the Boldt Funeral Home, Faribault, on Wednesday, August 18, 2010 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. and also at the church on Thursday for one hour prior to the service. Funeral Services will be held at First English Lutheran Church, Faribault on Thursday, August 19, 2010 at 11 a.m. with the Reverend Richard L. Jorgensen officiating. Interment will be at Meadow Ridge Memorial Park, Faribault. They lived in various residences in Rice County before purchasing a home at 521 Shumway in Faribault where they lived for 51 years. In 2005, Gertrude sold their home on Shumway and purchased a condo at Cardinal Pointe and loved it there very much. Gertrude is survived by five children: Lloyd (and Phyllis) Piepho of Savage, Harold (and Rae) Piepho of Lutsen, Walter (and Carol) Piepho of Olathe, KS, Paul (and Carrie) Piepho of Sacramento, CA, Trudy (and Bob) Kuhlman of Edina; twelve grandchildren, Ann Neilsen, John Piepho, Tim Piepho, Karla (and Kelly) Spence, Sara (and Jon) Voss, David (and Jessamy) Piepho, Jeff (and Meadow) Piepho, Matt (and Yvonne) Piepho, Daniel Piepho, Maxwell Piepho, Tamara Kuhlman, Nathan Kuhlman; 11 great-grandchildren; Andrew Comb, Austin and Alexis Piepho, Luke and Desiree Spence, Conor, Abram, Maggie and Roman Voss, and Jaustin and Titus Piepho; and a brother, Earl Sandager of Newberg Oregon, many nieces, nephews and dear friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, 3 sisters, 2 brothers, many in-laws, and many very dear friends. As a young woman Gertrude worked at St. Lucas Hospital in Faribault, followed by several years as a waitress at Wimpy's Restaurant. Over several years Gertrude was employed by the U.S. Census Bureau as an enumerator, worked on the agricultural census, and also worked in corrections. Her final job was at the Minnesota State Academy for the Deaf as a houseparent for 25 years. She retired in August 1982. Gertrude was very active at St. LukeÕs United Church of Christ at Women's Guild and Circle Meetings, several times serving as Chairperson. She and Ruth Kielmeyer were the first two women at St. LukeÕs to serve on the Church Council. She also volunteered as a "Meals on Wheels" driver and scheduler. In 2005, Gert had a longing to go back to her "Home Church," First English Lutheran Church, where she had been a member her first 22 years of life. She rejoined First English in 2005 but has many fond memories of St. Luke's United Church of Christ. She belonged to Faribault Senior Center and regularly participated in water exercise classes for over 25 years. Gertrude loved to play cards, be it "500", "Bridge", or many other card games. She was both competitive and social making many friends. Gert and Don loved going on two week long bus tours to view many beautiful areas of the United States. They also made many trips to the Oregon shore, Lutsen and Grand Marais. Family outings were a big enjoyment and their grandchildren were extra special to them. Gertrude was an exceptional person, active in her church and community and greatly beloved by her family, as she also loved us. She will be missed very much by many. Memorials may be directed to Habitat For Humanity or First English Lutheran Church.¹

Obituary	13 Mar 2006	Obituary: The obituary for Elmer was recorded on 13 Mar 2006. Elmer B. Sasse, 87, of Fremont died Friday, March 10, 2006, at Haven Manor in Lincoln. He was born Jan. 30, 1919, in Diller to Albert and Folena (Lottman) Sasse. He grew up on the farm, and graduated from Diller High School in 1937. In 1939, he began working as a crop insurance clerk in the Jefferson County AAA office, later becoming the chief clerk. At the same time he also had a small farming operation. In 1951, he became the secretary of the chamber of commerce of Moorhead, Minn. In 1952, he was named as treasurer of Midland Lutheran College in Fremont, later becoming the vice president of finance at the college. He remained a part of the college administration until retiring. He had received an honorary doctorate from Midland Lutheran College and he received the first Pro Christo Award that was given by the college. He had served in the U.S. Army from Sept. 19, 1942, through November 1945. He saw duty overseas in 1944. He was appointed an admiral in the Great Navy of the State of Nebraska on Nov. 7, 1949. He served the city of Fremont on the planning commission and the board of adjustment for 20 years. He was a longtime member of the Fremont Kiwanis Club. He had been very active in the United Lutheran Church in America. He had been the stewardship director of the Midwest Synod, and the first layman to be elected treasurer of the synod. He had served on the board of directors and board of pensions of the Lutheran Church in America, and the board of the American Missions - LCA. He also served on the board of the Lutheran School of Theology in Chicago, the board of the Nebraska Lutheran Campus Ministry and the board of the Nebraska Lutheran Outdoor Ministries. He was a member of St. Timothy Lutheran Church in Fremont. He married Elda Krebs on May 24, 1941, in Diller. Survivors include: his wife; two sons, Roger (and wife, Jan) Sasse and Gary (and wife, Jean) Sasse, all of Lincoln; a brother, Alfred (and wife, Brook) Sasse of Lincoln; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Lydia Mann, Clarence and Amanda Krebs, Viola Smith, Elmer and Bethel Krebs, Mildred Malchow, Orville and Dorothy Krebs, Phyllis and Delmar Wiemers and Faye and Edwin Schmidt; 10 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. The funeral will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at First Lutheran Church in Fremont with the Rev. John Plowman of St. Timothy Lutheran Church and Rev. Delmar Wiemers of First Lutheran Church officiating. Visitation will be from 1-9 p.m. Tuesday at Ludvigsen Mortuary in Fremont with the family receiving friends from 6:30-8 p.m. Burial will be 3:30 p.m. Wednesday in Prairie Home Cemetery in Diller. Military honors will be rendered at the cemetery. Memorials are suggested to St. Timothy Lutheran Church, the Elmer and Elda Sasse Endowment Fund at Midland Lutheran College and the Nebraska Lutheran Outdoor Ministries. Mary Kay was born Aug. 9, 1931 in Youngstown, the daughter of Joseph and Mary Ellen (Murphy) Saunders. A 1948 graduate of Ursuline High School, she was a homemaker and a member of St. Christine's Church, where she served on the Altar and Rosary Society, Infant of Prague Guild, and the prayer chain. She was also a member of the Mahoning County Council for Retarded Citizens. Her husband, Charles L Cornelius, whom she married Oct. 18, 1952, passed away Dec 5, 2002. Mrs. Cornelius leaves five children, Patricia (Lou) Geroni of Hamilton, Mary Jo (BJ) Artrup of Columbus, Brian (Laraine) Cornelius, with who she made her home in Canfield, James Cornelius of Mineral Ridge, and Daniel (Donna) Cornelius of North Canton; seven grandchildren, Daniel and Mimi Geroni, Erik and Claire Artrup, and Paul, Elise, and Elena Cornelius; two sisters, Florence (Steve) Gerak and Carol Jean (Don) Potts; and a brother, Jack (Barb) Saunders of Minnesota. Besides her husband, Mary Kay was preceded in death by a sister, Ruth Harris; a brother, Joseph Saunders; and her parents. Friends and family may offer condolences at 9:30 a.m. Monday before the services at the church.
