Virgo left us on July 22 doing what he loved, working in his yard and garden. Jim was born July 24, 1934 in Modesto, CA. He lived his entire life in Turlock and Delhi, attending Turlock High School. He retired from Turlock Irrigation District as a line supervisor in 1994. He also worked for a time at Leedom Tire Shop. Jim’s served in the National Guard. Jim loved to hunt and fish and was sad to give that up due to failing health but continued to support Ducks Unlimited and California Waterfowl. Growing fruits and vegetables to give away brought him great pleasure. He canned the best green beans and tomatoes. Jim was pre deceased by his father, George Virgo, mother, Bernice Mikkelsen, brother, Sidney Virgo and step-son, Robert Richardson. He is survived by Janice Virgo, his wife of over 40 years, daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Marty Zickefoose, and sister-in-law, Connie Virgo, 5 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. A visitation will be held at Turlock Funeral Home, 425 N. Soderquist Rd.in Turlock on July 30th from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. At Jim request, no other services will be held. O²

She entered the world at the dawn of a period of sweeping change in Europe, the same year the French Revolution began—an event that would reshape political and social structures across the continent. She was raised in a rural farming community where daily life revolved around agriculture, family, and the Lutheran church. Like most women of her time, Christine would have learned essential household skills at an early age—cooking, sewing, preserving food, and managing the home—preparing her for the demanding responsibilities of farm life. On July 29, 1808, she married Heinrich (Christian) Bremer at St. Thomas Lutheran Church in Hohenbostel. Their marriage took place during the height of the Napoleonic Wars, when the Kingdom of Hanover and surrounding German territories were affected by military campaigns, shifting political control, and economic disruption. Although rural villages like Wichtringhausen were somewhat removed from the centers of conflict, the broader instability would have influenced daily life through taxation, conscription pressures, and economic uncertainty. Christine and Heinrich established their household in Wichtringhausen, where Heinrich worked as a Halbmeier, operating a mid-sized farm. Together they raised a large family during a time when survival depended on hard work, cooperation, and resilience. Their home would have been a busy and demanding environment, with responsibilities that included preparing meals over open fires, tending gardens, raising children, and assisting in farm work as needed. Christine gave birth to numerous children between 1809 and 1831. As was common in the early 19th century, several of these children did not survive infancy or early childhood. The family experienced repeated losses, including infants and young children, reflecting the harsh realities of the time when diseases such as infections and childhood illnesses were often fatal due to limited medical knowledge and care. Despite these hardships, Christine’s role in maintaining the household and raising her family was central to their survival and continuity. Women like her formed the backbone of rural family life, ensuring that homes functioned efficiently and that children were cared for in difficult circumstances. Christine died on September 16, 1832, in Wichtringhausen at the age of 42. Her death came during a period when Europe was facing recurring outbreaks of disease, including the spread of cholera in the early 1830s, though the specific cause of her death is not recorded. She was laid to rest on September 20, 1832, at St. Thomas Lutheran Church in Hohenbostel. Her passing left Heinrich with a large family to raise, and within a year he remarried. Her children, including her son Friedrich Bremer, would carry forward the family’s legacy—eventually leading to immigration to America and the establishment of future generations in the Midwest.
