| Memo | (1800) | Memo: George Washington was an American soldier, farmer, and statesman, as well as the first President of the United States under the U.S. Constitution. Since the late 1780s, Washington was commonly referred to as the "Father of His Country" by his compatriots. He was commander-in-chief of the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War and presided over the 1787 Constitutional Convention. As a leading Patriot, he was among the nation's Founding Fathers. Born into wealthy Virginia gentry, Washington had early opportunities in his education and in military service which he exploited. He learned mathematics, which launched his early successful careers as a surveyor and land investor. He joined the Virginia militia at age 20, fought in the French and Indian War, and rose to the rank of colonel. The Second Continental Congress made him commander-in-chief of the Continental Army in 1775. Washington's strategy, field command, and development of the army combined with a French alliance to defeat the British, who surrendered after the Siege of Yorktown. He also waged total war against the Iroquois nation, a British ally. His devotion to American Republicanism impelled him to decline further power after victory, and he resigned as commander-in-chief in 1783. He was unanimously chosen to lead the Constitutional Convention in 1787 which devised the new Federal government.3 |

In 1944, they moved one mile west of the home place where they farmed and continued to live. In 1975, they retired. Carl and Clara moved to the Country View Manor in 2004. Carl was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church in Ocheyedan, where he was active when he was able. Church always came first. Carl and Clara enjoyed working together and keeping busy. They made quilts and gave them to the church and World Relief. They also enjoyed gardening and sharing the produce with the community. Carl continued gardening until he was 94. He passed away on Thursday, September 7, 2006, at the Country View Manor in Sibley. Those left to cherish his memories are his wife: Clara Wassman of Sibley, IA; two sons and daughters-in-law: Lorne and Maxine Wassman of Ocheyedan, IA, Darwin and Nan Wassman of Ogallala, NE; one daughter and son-in-law: Marilyn and Dennis Gregerson of Columbus, OH; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers: Edwin (in his youth), Arthur and Harry; four sisters: Elsie, Amollie, Hilda and Olga. Burial: Ocheyedan Township Cemetery Ocheyedan Osceola County Iowa, USA.1 |

| Memo | (1892) | Memo: [taken from 'History of Osceola County, Iowa, by D A W Perkins, 1892, pages 134-136] Since the earlier settlements in Horton Township quite a number of German families have moved into the township, and these Germans are considered as some of its most substantial and industrious citizens. In 1882 Henry Wassmann with his son Dick, Charles Griep and several others of their neighbors left Indiana and bought tickets to Chicago, from there to Glendive, Montana. They were simply going west as men do go, without knowing exactly where until they looked it over. They got to Bismarck in North Dakota, when the elder Wassmann thought that any more west was too much for him, and told the rest of the party they could go on, but as for himself he should look over a part of Iowa. This caused the three parties above named to return to St. Paul, where they bought tickets to Sheldon. They drove from Sheldon to Bigelow, Minn., and not desiring to settle there, were returning, when, by parties at Sibley, they were induced to settle in Osceola County, which they did. The Wassmann's bought several pieces of land, among which was the L. G. Ireland place on Section 34, where Dick Wassmann now lives. His correct name is Diedrich Wassman, but is commonly called Dick. There is no better farm in the county than Dick Wassmann's, and no better place for a home than right there among the large variety of forest trees, set out by the lamented Ireland and later by Dick himself. About one hundred different kinds of trees stand there in the gorgeous grandeur of their green foliage and as the leaves rustle in the breeze, they seem to whisper a voice of contentment, of thrift and independence which mark the surroundings, and are expressed in the hospitality of the occupant, for Dick Wassmann is no more diminutive in heart and soul than he is in stature. There are kinds of trees on this farm that probably couldn't be found anywhere else in the state, and fruit trees in abundance.Dick Wassmann bought the L. G. Ireland farm, which is one of the best and most attractive places in the county. Mr. Wassmann added to the already great variety of trees planted by Captain Ireland until it is claimed there are over one hundred varieties of forest trees in the beautiful grove that delights the eye as one drives past it. Mr. Wassmann served three terms as county treasurer and at one time wielded a powerful political influence in the east end of the county. After retiring from the treasurer's office he was connected with the bank of Ocheyedan until his death a few years ago. There is hardly space to mention at length all these strong men to whom Horton township owes much of her present prosperity. Henry Wassman returned to Indiana where he still resides. Charles Griepbought the northeast quarter Section 27 where he still lives and is a successful farmer. The coming of these parties here was the means of other Germans following them and buying land in Horton. Henry Pinkenburg took a part of Section 25, also did Conrad Hattendorf; Henry Rusche the northwest quarter of Section 14; Fred Glade a part of Section 23; William Lick a part of Section 21, and Conrad Oldendorf a part of Sections 23 and 25. W. H. Noehren bought the northeast quarter of Section 22,and still lives there. Mr. Noehren has been prominent in township matters, and at present is a member of a good class of people, and among its other substantial farmers not otherwise mentioned are the three Piscators, father and two sons, who we believe are on Section 8, Gustav Johnson on Section 10, William Rehborg on Section 11, and August Polinski on Section 13. On Section 14, besides Henry Rusche, lives August Bremer on the northeast quarter, and John Estabrook on the southwest quarter. Conrad Bremer is on Section 15, William Filk and John Farragher on Section 18, and Peter Wickland on Section 19. On Section 20 is Vaclave Sixty, also John Maske,Joseph Rhomatko and Joseph Cload. On Section 22 we find Chris Bremerand Henry Redeker. John Robertson has the southeast quarter of Section 24, and John Gielow and William Graveare on Section 26. On Section 27, besides Mr. Griep, are Charles Schmidt and William Sehr. Mr.John Thompson lives on a quarter of Section 28, and Mr. I. B. Titus owns a part of Section 30, and is the only resident on that section. Frank Engle is on Section 31, and William Maske on Section 32. Chris Wassmann is on Section 35 and has recently built there a house and barn. On Section 36 William Carney has a quarter, also A. V. Randall formerly lived on this quarter, but is now in business at Ocheyedan. J. T. Boling's place is now owned by Herman Bauermeister, who lives in Worthington, Minn.1 |
| Death | 29 Jan 1911 | Diedrich (Dick) Wassmann died on 29 Jan 1911 in Ocheyedan, Osceola, Iowa, United States. O1, 2 |

| Memo | (2001) | Memo: [A note from the Wassmann Family Tree on Ancestry.com] Dorothy she and her husband were married while he was in the Army during W.W.2. He spent 44 months in the service, entering on his birthday, March 29th, 1942, and being discharged November 29th, 1945. He saw action in Europe, and also saw about every State in the U.S. during his Army service. After he came home, they bought a farm 12 miles south of Sentinel Butte, and have farmed and ranched there ever since. They will complete their 32nd year on the farm in December, 1977, and hope to continue to live there many more years yet. He is now a salesman and crop loss adjuster for the Federal Crop Insurance Corp. He spent almost six weeks in the fall of 1976 at Storm Lake, Iowa, adjusting crop losses there. He has been especially busy this summer of 1977 adjusting crop losses in the State of N.D. He is also a supervisor for the local Soil Conservation District at Beach, served on the Local Selective Service Board, served on the F.H.A. Board at Dickinson as a county committeeman for Golden Valley County. He is a member of the American Legion, where he has held several offices. He held the office of Treasurer for the local school board for 25 years, was a township supervisor for six years, and was a tax assessor for the township for a few years. They are members of Trinity Lutheran Church in Sentinel Butte, (A.L.C.), where he has been the Treasurer for a number of years. She has held the office of Secy. and Treas. for the Sunday School for a number of years. She is very active in the A.L.C.W. of the church also, and he is a member of the Lutheran Brotherhood. He was also church usher for quite a few years too. Dorothy also belongs to the local Birthday Club and a bingo club, as well as the Am. Legion Aux. Dorothy stays at home and takes care of the ranch and the livestock and etc., when John is away from home adjusting crop losses. John used to do carpenter work for others as a sideline to farming until a severe back injury in November, 1973, forced him to give up that line of work. They have no family, so have always worked together side by side at whatever they set out to accomplish. They won the State Conservation Award for their farm for their county in 1967. They often receive high praise for the beauty of their farmstead, and their thousands of trees they have planted. Their only regret is that his parents and her father, Fred, didn't live long enough to see all they have accomplished. They have had their share of hard times. Fred and Lina were also very active in community affairs and church work. Fred was also a township supervisor for a number of years, and was a member of the school board for some years. Walter also was a township supervisor. He is also a member of Trinity Lutheran at Sentinel Butte. Dale and his family are also Lutherans. Jack Fakler and his children are Catholics; his wife and her boys are Lutheran.1 |

| Memo (fam) | (2000) | Memo: [A note from the Wassmann Family Tree on Ancestry.com] Glen and Emma Allstot and their three children spent the early part of their lives on a farm in Garner Township, just ¼ of a mile from where Fred and Lina Wassmann lived with their family. In August, 1937, Glen had an auction sale and moved his family to Tacoma, Washington, where he got employment at the smelter (in Tacoma) where he was employed for over 25 years. Earl, their son had began his high school at Sentinel Butte, but graduated from Tacoma High School. Darlene, their oldest daughter, had attended rural grade school in North Dakota, but both she and her sister, Mary Lee, graduated from Puyallup High School, as their parents had moved there by that time. Both girls worked in banks prior to their marriages. Mary Lee is still employed in a bank at Tacoma. Earl served in the Army during W.W.#2. Earl and Viola lived in the States of California, Texas, Maryland, and Washington during the years of their marriage. Earl was a chemist for a paper products company, at one time; I don't know what he does now, except that he travels a lot. Viola used to work at the J.C. Penny Stores. Since their divorce, Viola now lives at Carson City, Nevada, near their daughter, Patty, and family. Both of Earl's sons were in the service at one time. Emma Allstot worked in the canneries a lot there in Washington, also picked berries and helped planting flower bulbs. She died of cancer. She's buried at Puyallup too.1 |

| Memo (fam) | (2000) | Memo: [from the Wassmann Family Tree on Ancestry.com] Osceola County Iowa Glidden-Carroll County Iowa Bio: Emma Wassman was born in rural Ocheyedan Osceola County Iowa November 24 1884. She was the second eldest of five children and spent her early years in this area where her father was a respected farmer County Auditor and Banker. She attended rural school in Horton Township Osceola County. In 1901 the local Lutheran Parochial school was visited by a seminary student fulfilling his school mission teaching requirements. This slender Texan Frederick Hendrick Rudi was attending Concordia Seminary in St. Louis Missouri and their meeting started a long distance romance. After his graduation in 1903 he returned to Ocheyedan where on August 20 1903 they were married. The Reverend Rudi had accepted a pastoral call in 1902 to Clifton Texas located between San Antonio and Houston in an rural area settled by German immigrants in the late 1890's. In 1903 Emma left the green fields and frigid winters of Iowa for brown dusty cow country of south Texas which was to be her home until 1912. Their marriage produced eleven children all who grew to adulthood. Their pastoral calling was spent in three different congregations in three states. Their life together raising a family spanned the turbulent ten's a devastating world war the ebullient twenties the trials of the depression a second world conflagration and the after war recovery and technological advances. Five children were born at their first pastorate in Clifton. In 1912 they responded to a pastoral call to rural Tilsit at Jackson Missouri. Reverend Rudi served there until 1920 when they moved their family north to Glidden Iowa. Reverend Rudi served the Peace Evangelical Lutheran Church (Missouri Synod) until his retirement in 1943. Their Children were: Walter (1904) a high school scholar and athlete who died of pneumonia as a senior in high school. Carl (1906) Graduated in Electrical Engineering from Ames College (now ISU) prominent in athletics and Cardinal Key. He married Helen Heperly also an Ames College Graduate. Gertrude (1908) A creative person married Frank P Clawson. Elvira (1910) Trained as a nurse. Married Orville Prill died in childbirth at twenty two. Anita (1912) Music teacher/organist married buttermaker Gordon Junker. Martha (1915) Born with grand mal epilepsy passed away at twenty eight. Edgar (1916) Served with the 34th Division front line medical group for four years in North Africa and Italy. A University of Iowa graduate became an Audio-visual specialist at the University of Iowa Hospitals. Married Nadine Beckner. Frederick (1919) served five years with Patton and the Ninth Armored Division at Bastogne Bridge at Remagen and the race into Germany. Awarded the Croix de Guerre from Luxembourg in 1946. Rural Mail Carrier in Glidden Iowa. Married Arlene Elliott. Harold (1922) Served four years with the U.S. Navy Armed Guard as a signalman aboard merchant ships taking supplies across the north Atlantic to England and Murmansk Russia. After graduation from the University of Arizona was personnel director for Hughes Tool and Die Tucson. Married Kathleen Sporleder. Louella (1924) National Honor Society attended Iowa State College. Married Lowell B Fisher ISC and West Point graduate career military officer bomber pilot and missile commander. Norman (1928) Served in Army of Occupation Japan in paratroops. Graduated from the University of Oklahoma Architect. Married Ann Andrews. Frederick and Emma's lives were not without trial and tragedy apprehension and fear. But they were also filled with love expectancy hope accomplishment and thanks for their many blessings. Reverend Rudi was not only father to his flock but father to the entire congregation who needed and received considerable attention through the many difficult times. Consequently a great majority of the rearing feeding and caring fell squarely on Emma's shoulders. The family was raised with out the contemporary conveniences of electricity running water indoor plumbing and modern food storage. They maintained an enormous garden and the entire summer was preparation for surviving the winters. She canned vegetables fruits pickles sauerkraut odd cuts of beef received from parishioners and tomatoes. They maintained a chicken yard for eggs and fast food when Pastor Hermann of Lidderdale dropped by unexpectedly with his family of thirteen.1 |

| Memo (fam) | (2000) | Memo: [A note from the Wassmann Family Tree on Ancestry.com] Fred and Lina bought a home in Golva, and moved there to make their home until his death in July, 1959. Fred still continued to farm his own land until the last year before he passed away. Lina continued to live in her home in Golva, until failing health, in 1969, forced her to moved to Beach, North Dakota, to make her home. She lived in a house there with her brother, Bill, a widower from Aberdeen, South Dakota, until her death in June 1972. Fred and Lina saw many hard times during their life time on the farm, but somehow survived it all, living through the Depression Years and the Dirty Thirties. Fred and Lina both suffered from heart conditions later in life, and Fred died of a heart attack, and Lina died of internal bleeding. Their four children all attended rural grade school in Garner Township. Clara graduated from high school in Sentinel Butte; the other three never got to go to high school. Lloyd served in the Army in W.W.2. He farmed for some years, during the early years of his marriage. Then he worked as a carpenter, ran a cafe, worked for an oil company, worked for Cable T.V., and is now semi-retired. He works at the swimming pool as a maintenance man in the summer time, in Sidney, Montana, where he lives. His wife, Nina, has cooked in cafes for many years, also did some baby sitting in her home after they moved to Sidney. Their two daughters, neither one went to high school; they both married as young teenagers. Both have worked as waitresses in various cafes in Glendive, Montana, and the oldest daughter also worked at the Coca Cola Plant, and her husband and her owned and opened a tavern and pizza house for a while. Her husband now is manager of Cable T.V. in Glendive, Montana. The other daughter's husband works for an oilfield company, and they live at Watford City, North Dakota now. Their children are all in various grades in school.1 |

George and his first wife, Myrtle, homesteaded in eastern Golden Valley County in an area known as the Badlands east of Golva, when they came here from South Dakota after their marriage. After the death of his first wife, George then worked as a farm laborer for a few years; then he mined coal at various local coal mines for a few years; then he became a "Cat Skinner" on road construction for the county, until illness forced him to give up all heavy work the last year he lived. He also ran a snowplow for the county in the winter-time for some years. He died of cancer two days after New Years in 1944. His eldest daughter, Grace, was raised by her grandparents after her mother died. He and his second wife, Vera, lived in various towns after their marriage. | Memo (fam) | (1951) | Memo: [A note from the Wassmann Family Tree on Ancestry.com] Grace Wassmann married Joe Dietz and lived on a farm and ranch 14 miles south of Sentinel Butte, all their married lives, and raised their family there. Their farm had belonged to Joe's parents prior to the time that Joe took it over. After his wife's death in 1950, Joe continued to live on the farm and finished raising his family by himself. After his children were all grown and gone from home, Joe retired and sold the farm to his oldest son, Richard, and his wife. They now live there with their two youngest sons and their oldest daughter and her husband. They farm and ranch, also have a big dairy herd and also raise hogs. Richard's other children are all gone from home. Joe's oldest daughter, Myrtle, and her husband lived in Seattle after their marriage, and worked for Boeing Aircraft. This fall they retired and moved back to Marmarth, North Dakota to live. Margaret, the second daughter, lives at Marmarth with her husband and family. Marcella, the third daughter is a licensed practical nurse. She and her husband and family live on a farm south of Sentinel Butte. Her oldest son is married and lives in Wyoming. John, the second son lives in Oregon. I know nothing about their family. Doris, the next daughter, lives in Beach; she is County Superintendent of Schools. - This is the continuation of the Joe Dietz family history: Edward, the next son, and his family live in Colorado. He works for an oilfield co. Charles, the next son, lives on a farm south of Sentinel Butte, with his wife and children. Joan, the next girl, lives in Glendive, with her husband and family. She is a licensed practical nurse; her husband works for cable T.V. in Glendive. Robert, the next son, served in the Army and was over in Germany, where he met and married his wife. They returned to the U.S. He worked at various jobs, then moved to Wyoming, where he works for an oilfield co., and his wife, Christa, works in a bank. Eleanore, the youngest daughter, went to beauty operators school following graduation. Her husband works for the State Highway Department. They live in Sentinel Butte. James, the youngest son, and his family and wife live in Beach. He works at various jobs. All of the Joe Dietz children, except Margaret, graduated from Sentinel Butte High School. | Memo | (1970) | Memo: [A note from the Wassmann Family Tree on Ancestry.com] Harry was born in Golva, North Dakota on March 16, 1917. He was raised on a farm in Golva and attended school there until the 9th grade. He lived and worked there until he joined the CCCs in the 1930s. He was the first child of Henry and Sybil Wassman. His siblings were Alvin, Stella, and Ruth. When the depression hit full term, he and the rest of the family moved to the west coast in about Feb. of 1938. They had intended to move to Salem, Oregon, but when Sybil met with her older sister Mary Shaw who had already moved to Puyallup years ago they decided to stay in Puyallup. They lived for a time actually on Shaw road which was named after the Shaw family. They lived next door to the Clifford’s who they knew back in North Dakota. Harry married Nancy Francis Martus on Oct. 2, 1938 in Vancouver Washington. Harry and Nancy had 2 sons. Larry born 11/11/41 and Dennis born 12/16/1943. Harry worked in the Navel Shipyards during WW2, and spent the rest of his life in construction. He worked and built many of the biggest and highest buildings in the Northwest including the Seattle Space Needle and the SeaFirst Tower. Because Harry had dropped out of school at an early age to help on the farm, he had little opportunities without a high school diploma. He was not a stupid man and could do complex math in his head, but the only jobs he ever had involved working with his hands and were very hard physically. Construction is very dependent on weather and there would be long periods of time when there was no work to be had. Dad tried many things to make money. But as hard as he tried it seemed he could never really get ahead in life. He worked every day when he could and never stayed home when he felt ill. He smoked cigarettes and drank some as most men in his line of work did in those days. Because of smoking he had a heart attack in his early 40's. He was advised to stop, but he would not stop and that contributed to his death at 51 of another attack. Around town he was known as Zorro, because he had black hair and a dark complexion and kind of looked like the guy playing Zorro on TV in those days. He was honest and true and worked hard all his short life. He loved sports and had a short try as a pitcher in professional baseball, but failed a physical and had to give up on that dream. He did coach us kids in the area on our baseball teams for many years. I think he really worked himself to death trying to give us a good life. He supported me as best he could while I was in college and was proud that I was the first one in our family to go to college. I loved and respected my dad. He loved me as well and was proud of me and I knew it. The night before he died he was in the hospital waiting to go home after his latest heart attack. I was inspired to go and give him a shave as his beard was getting pretty bad. We were not the kind of dad and son that told each other we loved each other, but for some reason after I shaved him I said, "dad I love you". He said, "I love you too Larry". Those were the last words we said to each other and I am thankful to heavenly father that I had the chance to tell him the last time I saw him on earth. I miss you very much dad, and thanks for the life you gave me.1 |

| Memo | (2000) | Memo: [A note from the Wassmann Family Tree on Ancestry.com] My name is Larry Martus Wassmann, Heinrich would be my great, great grandfather. If you are working this same line as I have for years, here are some of the odd things I have found about this person and immediate family back in Lake County Indiana and Will County Illinois in the 1850-1920 time frame. First Henry (Heinrich) Wassmann came to Indiana from Germany with his first wife Doretta. There are many variations of her name as well but I have settled on this spelling for now. They arrived in New York in 1851 and migrated to Indiana. Please note in doing research that Lake County Indiana and Will County Illinois are next to each other just across state lines. The family was very active in the St. John’s Evangelical Lateran Church in Beecher Will County Illinois. Much of the events of their lives can be traced by going to the records of this church. Baptisms, Marriages, and Deaths are recorded there. Many of the family are buried there as best I can determine but as of yet I have not seen a gravestone for anyone in the family is supposed to be buried there. There is another Lutheran Church in the Beecher area named St. Paul’s. It was formed from members of St’ John’s. And yet another church formed from the same group of German immigrants after that in Sollitt Zion Church near Grant Park in Kankakee County Illinois and another daughter church of St. John’s called the Zion United Church of Christ in Dyer, Indiana . There are Wassmann relatives listed as buried in all of the graveyards adjacent to these churches and the church records record family life events, so go there to find great information on the family and extended family. Here are some of the ODD things I have found and would welcome correction or clarification from anyone who has better data. But I have more than one source for what I have found so if you have other information which I would welcome, I would appreciate the source of your information so I can cross check it. The family used the name Wassmann and Wassman and even Wassemann. Maybe the census takers miss understood or miss wrote, I do not know but I have found the same family members with the same dates of birth listed as any, and all of these last names at times. There was another large Wassmann family living there at the same time and in fact the name of the head of the family was also Heinrich. But the wife was Sophie Meier. Their children had many of the same first names, which was not uncommon, but it does cause a lot of confusion. The dates of births of these Wassmann’s are a little older and it looks like they came to America a few years before my line did. For a time I had these folks intermixed but the relatives of this Wassmann line have assured me that in fact as strange as it seems there were two major Heinrich Wassmann families in the area at the same time. They must have been related as they both came from Germany at relatively the same time. Here is one thing that I find very odd. I may have some of the facts wrong but to the best of my ability this is what I have. Doretta Wassmann died in 1872. This fact is recorded in the St. John’s church records. Henry apparently married Anna Kappermann that same year, in fact just a few months apart. I have a copy of a marriage certificate for a Henry Wassman and Anna Kappermann filed in Cook County Illinois in 1872. Note that the name has one “n” . The church records at St. John’s lists their marriage at the same dates but the names have two “ns”. I guess not uncommon. But how could the marriage take place so quickly? Hanky-Panky???? To make matters even worse, there was a Henry Wassmann born in 1872 to them????? But in the baptismal records at the Zion United Church in Dyer there is a Anna Kappermann as mother of a Heinrich (Henry) baptized that was born on Nov. 15, 1871 and she does not list the father’s name. Apparently he was born out of wedlock but who was the father? Could have been my gg grandfather or maybe someone else and my gg grandfather adopted him????? More questions to be answered. Now I know dates can get messed up but I have big questions on my part. I have found the listing for all the family in the Hanover Township, Lake County Indiana census of 1880 but the name is listed as Wassemann. Note the random e in the name. Many of the children of Henry and Anna, who is sometimes listed as Annie, are buried in the graveyard at St. Paul’s church in Beecher. Other events and other census data has their names correct but it is very confusing. My great grandfather Henry C. Wassmann who was born of Doretta in 1858 is listed along with this other Henry born in 1872 to Anna. My grandfather’s name was also Henry Wassmann. He was born in 1893. Are you confused? My grandfather would then be Henry the 3rd. I have death certificates on these folks and they list their fathers. So I am confident of the linkage of the Henry’s, but some of the details get me very confused. If you have any information on any of these people please contact me.2 |

| Memo | (1933) | Memo: [A note from the Wassmann Family Tree on Ancestry.com] Background History of Henry and Josephine Wassmann "The Background History of the Wassmann Families" Henry C. Wassmann was baptized and attended German Lutheran parochial school while a boy in Indiana, and was confirmed there. He attended high[?] school at Brunswick, Indiana. At the age of eighteen he moved to Iroquois County, Illinois, and in 1881 he moved to St. Louis, Missouri. From there he went to Jerseyville, Illinois, where he married his wife Josephine Newberry. At least one of their children were born there. It was hard to determine exactly where all the children were born, as the family moved around a lot, and each set of relatives seemed to have a different birthplace for their own parent. I did the best I could with the information I could gather from obituaries and from relatives' information. Anyway, from there it is thought they moved to Iowa, where they lived until 1904. Then they moved to Dell Rapids, South Dakota. From there they moved to North Dakota, settling in Garner Township, Golden Valley County, a few miles east of the village of Golva, North Dakota. They purchased a farm there, where they lived out their remaining years. Grandfather Henry C. owned and operated a steam threshing rig and did most of the threshing in the area, until failing health in his last years put a stop to active work. He was also a Township Supervisor for Garner Township. He died at his farm home of a severe case of "dropsy" on June 18th, 1932. He was buried from the Methodist Church at Beach, North Dakota, and laid to rest in the city cemetery at Beach. His wife Josephine continued to live on the farm with her son Bill (who was now divorced from his wife). Josephine passed away at her farm home also, during Easter week in April, 1934. She had suffered from diabetes for many years; this, along with severe burns she suffered on her entire body, caused her death. Her clothing caught fire while doing the cooking in her home; she lived one week after. She is buried in the Beach Cemetery beside her husband. She was also buried from the Methodist Church. "Grandma" Wassmann, as she was affectionately called by all who knew her, was greatly missed by everyone. Her six sons were her pall bearers. Henry and Josephine have the following list of descendants as of 1994: Ten children; twenty-nine grandchildren; eighty-three great grandchildren; one hundred four great-great-grandchildren, and seven great-great-great-grandchildren. All (?) eight of Henry's children were married, and they all had families except for Harry. All of the grandchildren married except for four, two of which died at birth. All had families except for Leslie, Dorothy, Alvin, James and Dale. Thirty-five great-grandchildren are married, and six great-great-grandchildren are married. The majority of them have families also. There is also a possibility that there may be more great-great-great-grandchildren that I have no knowledge of at this time. Their descendants are now scattered all over the United States doing all types of occupations.1 |
