| Memo | 1860 | Memo: Cord Koeritz (known as Henry all his life), was from the town of Idensen, a village of less than 1000. Neingraben, where Heinrich Koritz was born, is now a village of 4-6 houses/barns, on the edge of Idensen. His date of birth of 16 July 1838 is cited in He was a farmer, but was trained as a weaver in his homeland. His family were peasant farmers, with little land of their own. They worked for other farmers during the day and at night they returned to their home on the edge of town and wove linen on their own looms to bring in additional money. Henry, being the last of numerous male children born in his family, didn't have a chance of having even the smallest patch of land for his own, and the wars of the 1850's in Germany would have soon drafted him into the army if he had not left for America. He emigrated to America when he was 20 years of age. Cord arrived in America in July of 1858. It appears that he arrived in the New York harbor on the 4th of July but was not released from immigration procedures on Castle Island until July 6. He had arrived on the sailing ship Orpheus from Bremerhaven, Germany.2 |

He claims Germany as the land of his birth, having been born near Hesse-Cassel June 16, 1838, and is a son of Christopher and Mary Koritz. The family of this worthy couple numbered five children, as follows: Conrad, who died in 1850; Christopher, who is still living in Germany; Catherine, the wife of Christopher Pinkenburg, also a resident of the Fatherland; Sophia, who became the wife of Henry Pinkenburg, and died in 1882; and our subject. The subject of this sketch is the youngest in the family. He was reared to manhood in his native land and his education was acquired in the public schools, which he attended until fourteen years of age. At the age of sixteen, he began earning his own livelihood. He learned the weaver's trade, which he followed for a number of years, or until his emigration to America, in 1858. Wishing to try his fortune in the New World, of whose advantages he had heard so much, he crossed the Atlantic in a sailing-vessel, and after a voyage of five weeks landed in New York City on the 4th of July, 1858. He did not remain long in the eastern metropolis, but at once journeyed Westward to Chicago, and thence went to Crete, Will County, Ill. He had borrowed money to bring him to America and had again to borrow in Chicago to bring him to Crete. He began work on a farm at $8 per month, and was thus employed for a period of five years, after which he rented land for two years and engaged in farming on his own account.2 |

Mrs. Barnhart had worked as a secretary for attorney Fred Raney Miller in Gilman. She had also worked at the Condenser Factory in Watseka, retiring in 1978. She was born July 27, 1913, in Thawville, the daughter of Amos and Hulda Gerth Koritz. Her husband, George Maurice Barnhart, whom she married Oct. 20, 1932, in Clayton, Mo., died April 24, 1984. She attended schools in Thawville and Onarga. She was a graduate of Gallagher Business School in Kankakee. She had been a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Gilman since 1970. She enjoyed oil painting, crossword puzzles and being with her family. Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, James Maurice and Lynn Barnhart of Lawton, Okla.; one daughter and son-in-law, Roberta "Barney" and Robert "General" Harrison of Gilman; two granddaughters, Diane Herscher of Kankakee, Janette Harrison of Gilman; six great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Naomi Bossong of Watseka; one brother-in-law, Arlo Barnhart of Woodland; and special friend, Millie Schunke of Gilman. Deceased are two brothers, Lloyd and Alvin Koritz; one sister, Wilma Martin; and one grandson, Mike Harrison.2 |

He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Freddie Clayton Kolb of Blue Springs; his daughter, Janie Kolb Vinson of New Albany; his son, Randy Kolb (Betty) of New Albany; two granddaughters, Brandy Kolb of Tupelo and Rachel Murphree (Shane) of New Albany; and three great-grandchildren, Reagan Vinson of Burnsville and Katherine Smith and Clayton Murphree, both of New Albany. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Earnestine Rakestraw; his brother, Woodson Kolb; and his grandson, Brad Vinson. Pallbearers will be Shane Murphree, Clayton Murphree, Dennis Clayton, Charlie Dillard, Jimmy Sprouse, Eldridge Littlejohn, Gus Randle, Arthur Koon, Mike McCord and Bill Hunter.
