| Memo (fam) | (2000) | Memo: [A note from the Wassmann Family Tree on Ancestry.com] Henry and Josephine raised their granddaughter, Grace Marie, from the age of six years, at the death of her own mother, Myrtle Wassmann, in 1918. Their step-grandson, Leslie Normandy, also stayed with them quite a lot, also with his step-father Bill Wassmann, later on, as Bill continued to live on the farm after his parents death, until 1938, when he sold the farm and moved to Puyallup, Washington. He purchased a berry farm and operated that until the last years of his life. He retired and made his home with his sister and brother-in-law, Emma and Glen Allstot, at Puyallup. His funeral was held at Puyallup, and was buried there. I don't know what Bill did for a living during the years he was married, but I imagine he farmed. He worked for his brother Fred on his farm, before he (Bill) was married. After his divorce from his wife, Daisy, he moved back home with his parents. His wife, Daisy, and daughter, Edna, moved to the home of a bachelor, where Daisy was the housekeeper, first on the farm for many years, then, after her employers retirement, they moved to Beach where he purchased a home. Daisy continued to work for him till her death. Her son, Leslie, moved to California in the late 30's. Her daughter, Edna, also moved to California in 1939. She was employed at the home of a movie director until her marriage. She is still working in the movie and T.V. industry, as she works for a catering service that supplies box lunches to movie and T.V. crews working out on location. Her husband, Bob, is a chauffeur for a dignitary in the movies. Leslie was a rodeo trick rider at the time of his death. Very little is known about either of his wives. He never had any children in either marriage.1 |

Israel married Mary Waters around 1799 in Mason County, Kentucky—a region that, at the turn of the 19th century, was a bustling frontier settlement along the Ohio River, known for its role in westward expansion and its proximity to the early tobacco trade. By 1818, amid the post-War of 1812 migration surge, Israel moved his family to Illinois, settling in Walnut Hill, Marion County. This was a time when Illinois had just achieved statehood (1818), and Marion County itself was carved from wilderness in 1823, named after Revolutionary War hero Francis Marion, the “Swamp Fox.” Early settlers like Jennings endured harsh winters, prairie fires, and isolation, yet they laid the foundation for thriving agricultural communities. Israel and Mary’s union produced several children, including Charles Waters Jennings, whose daughter, Mariah Elizabeth Jennings, became the mother of William Jennings Bryan, the famed orator and three-time presidential candidate. Bryan’s own words in The First Battle echo the populist spirit inherited from these pioneers: “Burn down your cities and leave our farms, and your cities will spring up again as if by magic; but destroy our farms and the grass will grow in the streets of every city in the country.” This sentiment reflects the agrarian values deeply embedded in families like the Jennings, who transformed Illinois prairies into productive farmland during the antebellum era. Israel Jennings’ life spanned a transformative period in American history—from the Revolutionary generation through the Civil War era. His story is emblematic of the westward movement, the resilience of frontier families, and the enduring influence of early settlers on national politics. Today, his legacy lives on not only in genealogical records but in the ideals championed by his descendants. |

The Henderson Roll or Rolls of 1835 is a listing of 16,000 Cherokees living in Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, & North Carolina to be removed to Oklahoma, per Treaty New Echota. It was taken in the months leading up to the conclusion of the Treaty of New Echota in December 1835. It lists more than 900 heads of household, with statistical information about each family, including number of people by blood percentage, number of slaves, and farm capacity. The census is organized by state, county, and watercourse, providing the general area where each family lived. The entry was found on Page 6 of the Georgia list. The household was made up of 4 males under 18; 2 females over 18; 0 females under 16; and 1 slave over 16. O3 |

| Memo | 9 Dec 1909 | Memo: Indian Chief: According to an article in 'The Republican' from Salem, IL on Dec 9, 1909 - "David Weaver, chief of the Eastern Cherokees". |
| Memo | (1910) | Memo: Who was Dave Weaver? Much has been writen about Dave Weaver, some true and some maybe not. It would appear from the 1835 Census that he was a full blooded Cherokee Indian. Some have referred to him as a "Chief", but no indian documents have been found that would verify that. When his property was evaluated in 1836 by the US Gov't, in preparation for the Trail of Tears move, Dave's property had 1 and one half acres and was valued at $19. He was about the poorest Cherokee on the list. Bob Eddings, a descendant of Dave Weaver who has done much research on him, states "I have never seen an Indian name for Dave Weaver, Elizabeth Weaver, or any of Daves several sons. I have been trying to find out when and how he and daughter Elizabeth got their Christian names of Weaver.".3 |

| Memo | 5 Dec 2018 | Was Francis Elizabeth a daughter of David Weaver?: On 5 Dec 2018 a Glenda Miller Pritchard made the following post to a Facebook Group called 'Descendants of John Eddings and Elizabeth Weaver'. The following is a copy of that post: Several of the Eddings family applied to receive funds the federal government paid to relocated Cherokees. All the claims were though their relationship to Elizabeth Eddings via Dave Weaver. All of these applications were rejected. The reason they were rejected is documented in the Guion Miller Roll report and Records of Eastern Cherokee Ancestry in the U.S. Court of Claims 1906-1910. The follow explanation is taken from a book called "Cherokee by Blood" which takes its information from the report. 45. JAMES A. BLACKBURN and 3 children, Moneta, Cal. Rejected. These applicants allege that they are descendants of the Dave Weaver who was enrolled in 1835. They claim through Elizabeth Weaver, daughter of Dave, who married John Eddings, and who had the folowing children: Frances Blackburn nee Eddings, Ivan Eddings, Richard D. Eddings and Jesse Eddings. The applicants herein are descendants of these children. There is a conflicting evidence as to where Elizabeth Eddings was residing in 1835. There is some evidence to the effect that she died in that year. Levi R. Eddings, Elizabeth's grandson (Appl. #2370), states that she died in Marion Co., Ill in 1835 (see Exhibit 2). Andrew E. Blackburn (Appl. #6007), another grandson, states that she died in Mo. in 1841 (see Exhibit 4). Josiah Eddings (Appl. #1671), also a grandson of Elizabeth, states that his grandmother was living in Tenn. in 1835 (see Exhibit 6). There is a "Dav" Weaver on the roll of 1835, Cherokee Co., Ga., Page 38, enrolled with 6 others, making a family of 7, all full-bloods, and it is stated on that roll that there were in that family, 4 males under 18 years of age, 2 over 18, and 1 female under 16. Elizabeth Eddings, as shown by applications and other evidence, was a grandmother in 1835, having several grandchildren who were born in about 1830 and one in 1828, Ivan Eddings. There is no evidence in this case as to whether Dave Weaver had any other children than Elizabeth Eddings, and there is no evidence tending to prove that the Dave Weaver on the roll of 1835 is the ancestor of applicants herein, except their statements to that effect. Elizabeth Eddings or her husband should have been on the roll of 1835 under the name of Eddings, if she were living in the Cherokee domain or were recognized as a member of the tribe at that time. Most of her children were also heads of families in 1835, and should also have been enrolled at that time under their own names. Neither the names of any of the ancestors nor the names of any of the applicants herein, with the exception of that of Dave Weaver, appear on the rolls of 1835, 1851, or 1882. The necessary supposition is, therefore, that if Elizabeth Eddings was an Eastern Cherokee and was ever a recognized member of the tribe, she had left the tribe prior to 1835, and since that time neither she nor any of her descendants have been connected with or recognized as members of the tribe. If she and her children had not left the Cherokee tribe but had been recognized members thereof, they would certainly have been enrolled on some of the Eastern Cherokee rolls. As above shown, the Dave Weaver on the roll of 1835 was enrolled with a family of 6, 4 being males under 18 years of age and 1 female under 16. Elizabeth Eddings, who as claimed by applicants herein, was the daughter of Dave Weaver, and was, as above shown, a grandmother in 1835 and had a grandchild 7 years old at that time, so that it is extremely improbable that Dave Weaver would have had several children under 18 years of age and one who was a grandmother at that same time. Even conceding that applicants herein are the descendants of the Dave Weaver whose name appears on the roll of 1835, they would not be entitled, as Elizabeth Eddings and her children as above shown were old enough to have been enrolled on the 1835 roll in their own names as heads of families, and if Elizabeth had left the tribe they would be classed as Old Settlers, if Cherokees at all, and consideration of the premises, therefore, the applications of all person claiming thru Dave Weaver and his daughter, Elizabeth are hereby rejected. EXCEPTION CASE. Rejected. Dave Weaver Group. Total number of exceptions filed in this group - 189. Original recommendation renewed. |
