| Memo | 10 Apr 2026 | Biography: Albert Christopher Bremer (1897–1984) Albert Christopher Bremer was born on October 29, 1897, in Horton Township, Osceola County, Iowa. He entered the world at a time when rural America was still largely unchanged from the 19th century. Farming was done primarily with horses, homes typically lacked electricity and indoor plumbing, and communities were closely centered around church, family, and the land. His birth came just one year before the Spanish–American War, during a period when the United States was beginning to emerge as a global power. He was baptized on November 21, 1897, at Zion Lutheran Church, a congregation that would remain central to his life. Like many children growing up in rural Iowa, Albert attended a one-room country school and completed his education through the seventh grade around 1909. His upbringing reflected the rhythms of farm life—long days of physical labor, seasonal routines, and a reliance on family cooperation. As a young man, Albert came of age during a time of global conflict. He registered for the draft on September 12, 1918, near the end of World War I. Although many rural men did not ultimately serve overseas, the war had a profound impact on farm communities. Agricultural production was critical to the war effort, and demand for crops increased while labor became scarce. The 1920s brought change to American farming. Mechanization began to take hold, with tractors slowly replacing horse-powered equipment. Automobiles such as the Ford Model T made travel to nearby towns easier and reduced rural isolation. Even so, life on the farm remained demanding and uncertain. Those uncertainties deepened during the Great Depression. Farmers were among those hardest hit as crop prices collapsed and many families faced the loss of their land. Although northwest Iowa was less affected by the worst of the Dust Bowl than areas farther west, economic hardship and drought were still significant challenges. It was during this difficult period, as conditions were just beginning to improve, that Albert married Margaret Johanna Hartwig on December 23, 1938, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Melvin, Iowa. Albert spent his entire life in Osceola County, farming northeast of Ocheyedan. During World War II, farmers like Albert played a vital role in supporting the nation. Food production was essential both for Americans at home and for troops overseas. Farm families worked long hours, often with limited help due to labor shortages, while also coping with wartime rationing of fuel and materials. During this same period, rural life began to improve with the expansion of electricity through programs such as the Rural Electrification Administration, gradually bringing modern conveniences to farm homes. The years following the war brought increasing prosperity and rapid modernization to agriculture. By the late 1940s and 1950s, farms were transitioning to tractors, combines, and more efficient equipment. Rural homes gained running water, electricity, and modern appliances, transforming daily life. These changes mirrored improvements made on the Bremer farm, where conveniences such as indoor plumbing were added, reducing the physical burden of everyday tasks. Albert and Margaret raised their family during this period of growth and change. They were the parents of three children: Belva Joan, who died in infancy; Wayne Alden Bremer; and Verna Jean Bremer. Their life together was rooted in faith, family, and the farming community. Albert was a lifelong member of Zion Lutheran Church, where he was confirmed in 1912 and later became a charter member of the church’s Men’s Club. He was also a member of the N.G.O. Club. Albert retired from farming in 1963, after decades of working the land, and moved into the town of Ocheyedan. By that time, agriculture was continuing to evolve toward larger and more mechanized operations, and many small family farms were beginning to decline. In retirement, he witnessed a rapidly changing world, including the tensions of the Cold War and milestones such as the Apollo 11 Moon Landing—events far removed from the horse-powered farming of his youth. Margaret passed away in 1970. Albert continued to live in the Ocheyedan community he had known his entire life. He died on November 1, 1984, at Worthington Regional Hospital in Worthington, Minnesota. Funeral services were held at Zion Lutheran Church, where he had been baptized, confirmed, and remained a lifelong member. He was laid to rest in Zion Lutheran Cemetery. Albert Christopher Bremer’s life spanned an era of extraordinary transformation. From a childhood without electricity or modern conveniences to a lifetime that witnessed mechanized farming, global wars, and the beginnings of the space age, his story reflects both the endurance and adaptability of the American farm family. |

| Obituary | Aug 2013 | Obituary: The obituary for Alvin was recorded on Aug 2013. Al Bremer, a long time Mason City resident, died peacefully, in Naples, FL on August 15,, 2013, at the age of 82. Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Monday (August 19, 2013) at Fuller Funeral Home, 1625 Pine Ridge Road, Naples, with Rev. Roy Fisher, officiating. Entombment will be in the mausoleum at Naples Memorial Gardens, Naples, Florida. The family will greet friends one hour prior to services Monday, at the funeral home. Al was born in Horton Township, Iowa September 12th 1930, a son of Edward and Adele (Ostermann) Bremer. Not long after graduating from Ocheydan High School, he enlisted in the United States Air Force, serving as a B29 Gunner in the Korean War and being awarded the Purple Heart. Upon returning from Korea, Al returned home to the Ocheydan area, where he met Marge Stallinga. Al and Marge were married on August 16th, 1957. In 1959, with two young children, Al and Marge made the decision to leave the family farm, with Al enrolling at the University of Minnesota and earning a degree in Mortuary Science, leading to his eventual move to Mason City in October 1963. The Bremers purchased the then, McCauly- McKassen Funeral Home, and operated as McCauley - Bremer Funeral Home from 1963 to 1968. In 1968, McCauley - Bremer merged with Hogan- McKee Funeral Home, where Al and Charles Hogan operated as Hogan- Bremer Colonial Chapel until their retirements in 1996, also establishing Colonial Chapel Funeral Homes in Northwood, Manly, Nora Springs and Clear Lake, as well as Memorial Park Cemetery & Crematory. Al and Marge eventually moved to Naples, FL, in their retirement years. While in Mason City, Al was active in local service organization such as Kiwanis, Rotary, Toastmasters, as well as the Iowa Funeral Directors Association. Appointed by Gov. Branstad, he served three terms on the Iowa Board of Mortuary Science Examiners. He was also an active member of the Republican party in Cerro Gordo County and Iowa, including a run for US Congress for Iowa's 6th district in 1982. In his spare time, his passion was fishing, making numerous trips to Canada and Lake Michigan with good friends and spending hours tinkering in the garage to equip the perfect fishing boat. More than anything, Al was a devoted Husband, Father and Grandfather, unfailingly generous with his time and love. He is survived by Marge, his wife of 56 years, Daughter, Sonda Kuhn and husband Paul, of Naples, FL, Son, Glendon and wife Diane, of Beaverton, Oregon and grandchildren, Brandon, Alton, Mackenzie and Zoie; brother, Donald Bremer, Ocheydan. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Arlene Range. We will all miss him greatly.3 |
