| Note | (13 Oct 1935) | Note: (13 Oct 1935). The family story I heard before I did some research was that Frank took his Mom, Frances Manning, and brother David Wilder to visit Frances' mother, Mary Frances Jennings, in Sorento, IL. His girl friend, from Greenville, IL had just broken up with him. Note from the author: After reviewing the newspaper articles below there is one item that doesn't make sense at first - the trip to Wisconsin to get his mother. His mother lived in Sioux City, IA and her mother lived in Sorento, IL. Certainly, today, you'd take Interstates south from Sioux City to Kansas City to St Louis and east. But in 1935 'maybe' going through Wisconsin might have been a better route??.7 |

| News | 14 Oct 1935 | Newspaper Clipping: A newspaper clipping from Alton Evening Telegraph, page 21 in Alton, Madison, Illinois, United States on 14 Oct 1935 mentioned Henry. Man Found Shot After Threat to Commit Suicide Farmer Driving Cattle to Pasture Makes Discovery EDWARDSVILLE, Oct 14 (Special) - Frank Cash, 28, who Sunday night had threatened to kill himself, was found slumped in the seat of his automobile, a fatal bullet wound in his head, this morning, near the Brockmeier church just off Bluff Road. His finder was a young farmer, Oliver Ortgier, who was driving his herd of cattle to pasture at the time. Seeing the automobile parked along the roadside, he looked inside, to see Cash's body slumped down in the seat. He immediately went to the home of his father, where he notified the office of Sheriff Simon Henry by telephone. Cash had been forced to pull the trigger twice to make his old 38 calibre revolver discharge, a hammer mark on one undischarged cartridge indicated, according to the investigators from the sheriff's office. In Hackethal's tavern near Long Lake, Sunday night, the investigators found, Cash had told Merle Madison and another companion named Feltman he intended to kill himself. The threat met with the dare "You're too yellow!" it was said at the sheriff's office. The automobile in which the body was found, though new, bore dents and scratches, but it was learned Cash had been held up on a recent trip to Wisconsin. The bandits had wrecked the automobile, turning it over in a ditch at the time. Investigators expressed the opinion the body had been where it was found most of the night. The trip to Wisconsin had been made for the purpose of bringing his mother back to Illinois. She now is at Sorento, where relatives have been notified. Cash, himself, had been moving from place to place, doing work on farms. He last worked for Emil Brockmeieer, near the spot where his body was found. O |
| News | 15 Oct 1935 | Newspaper Clipping: A newspaper clipping from Belleville Daily Advocate, page 3 in Belleville, St Clair, Illinois, United States on 15 Oct 1935 mentioned Henry. EDWARDSVILLE MAN FOUND FATALLY SHOT The body of Frank Cash, 33, odd-job man of Edwardsville, Ill., was found in his automobile with a bullet fired through the mouth into his brain yesterday, on a farm road near Sand Prairie, Madison county. A revolver on the seat beside the body had been fired once after one bullet had failed to fire. According to authorities he had been dead about eight hours. Investigation by authorities showed he was last seen Sunday night at Long Lake, when he told acquaintances he was going to take his life because of financial difficulties and an unsuccessful love affair. | News | 16 Oct 1935 | Newspaper Clipping: A newspaper clipping from Alton Evening Telegraph, page 1 in Alton, Madison, Illinois, United States on 16 Oct 1935 mentioned Henry. 'Read Papers Tomorrow' Said Man Day Before He Was Found Shot to Death Worried Over Payment That Was Due on Automobile EDWARDSVILLE, Oct 16, (Special) - Inability to pay the next installment on an automobile, to some, may mean only a chance to try one's skill at "beating the courts." To Henry Francis (Frank) Cash, honest but poor farmhand, it meant loss of honor that could be cancelled only by suicide. "You'll read about me in the papers tomorrow morning," he told two companions, Orville Feltman and Merle Madison, as they left a tavern near Long Lake Sunday night, after the two had attempted to dissuade him from suicide, Feltman and Madison testified at a coroner's inquest here Tuesday night. Madison testified Cash had threatened suicide before, and told him he intended to kill himself by Oct 13. An installment on his automobile, wrecked when bandits held him up and kidnaped him on a trip to Wisconsin a short time before, was due Oct 15. The coroner's verdict was "death from a gunshot wound, self-inflicted, with suicidal intent." Another witness at the inquest was John Meek, night watchman at the Kettle River treating plant near here, who said Cash had entered the plant for something to eat, had left to return some articles to a farmer for whom he had worked, then returned, leaving a note in which he disposed of his trunks and ordered his automobile be turned back to the agency from which he had purchased it. Orville Ortgier, a farmer residing along Bluff road, near here, testified to finding Cash's body in the automobile Monday morning when he (Ortigier) was driving his cattle to pasture. O |

| Obituary | 21 Mar 2024 | Obituary: The obituary for Howard was recorded in Colorado Springs, El Paso, Colorado, United States on 21 Mar 2024. Howard Francis “Frank” Cash – beloved husband, father and grandfather – passed away peacefully in his home on March 8, 2024, in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He was born in Sioux City, Iowa, on April 27, 1937, the first of two sons to the late Howard and Lillian (Mortensen) Cash. Frank graduated from Climbing Hill High School in 1956. He furthered his education at Morningside College, earning a bachelor’s degree in mathematics in 1961. An avid outdoorsman, Frank moved to Colorado to be closer to the hobbies that he enjoyed including hunting, fishing and camping. He had stories for days about his adventures in the woods – from stepping on a hibernating bear in the Rocky Mountains to chasing down Caribou in Alaska…most of which were true. He also loved classic cars and spent countless hours in the garage rebuilding engines and restoring Ford Mustangs. The cars, along with his hunting trophies, were his pride and joy and were kept on display for all to see. Unbeknownst to him, his move to Colorado would introduce him to a new love, his wife, Sheila. They married on New Year’s Eve in 1965 and shared nearly 49 years of memories – raising two daughters and doting on four grandchildren along the way. After working for private engineering firms, including a surveying company of his own, Frank made a career with the U.S. Department of Defense as a civilian contractor specializing in the areas of space, missile warning and war fighter support. He retired as a GM-15 in 1997 after more than 30 years. After he retired, Frank enjoyed bowling and making trips “up the hill” to try his luck in Cripple Creek. Even when he wasn’t bowling himself, he spent many hours in bowling centers visiting with his friends and watching his family bowl. Frank leaves behind daughters Penny and Dana and their spouses; four grandchildren – Kurt, Kenda, Taylor and Tanner; brother Ted (Verna) Cash and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends that will miss him dearly. He was preceded in death by his wife Sheila, son Kurt, and both parents. A private celebration of life will be held for the immediate family this summer in the place that he loved most…the mountains. | Birth | 4 Jan 1909 | Howard Taft Cash was born on 4 Jan 1909 in Flora, Clay, Illinois, United States. O |
| Proof of Parents | (5 Jan 1909) | Howard Taft Cash's parents are Howard's birth certificate says that his parents are 'Eliga Cash' and Frances Jane Manning, but I believe that his father was John R Blackburn for the following reasons: Facts: 1. 30 Oct 1898, Clay Co, IL - Howard's Grandmother Mary Frances Jennings married John R Blackburn. She had previously married Henry Palmer Manning and had two children with him - Howard's mother, Frances Jane Manning and her younger sister Laura. John Blackburn had been married twice before (the first wife died; he had divorced the second one). Frances and her younger sister Laura lived in the household along with 3 children from John's previous marriage. 2. 13 May 1905, Flora, IL - Henry Francis Cash, Howard's older brother, was born. His mother Frances Jane Manning was unmarried at the time. 3. 14 Aug 1905, Flora, IL - Frances Jane Manning (Howard's mother) married Elijah Cash. 4. Fall 1905 - a doctor visits the family because of a problem with Henry Francis - he fills out a birth certificate form, listing Elijah as the father. Illinois did not require birth certificates until 1917. 5. 16 Mar 1906, Flora, IL - A divorce was granted between Frances Manning Cash and Elijah Cash. Elijah filed for divorce on the grounds that Frances had "carnal knowledge" with John R Blackburn. Frances, under oath, signed an admission that she had "illegal sex" with one John R Blackburn, before and after she married Elijah. 6. 04 Jan 1909, Flora, IL - Howard Taft Cash is born. 7. 17 May 1910, Flora, IL - census records show a family consisting of Mary Frances (Jennings) Blackburn, Frances Jane (Manning) Cash, Howard Taft Cash, and his older brother Henry Francis Cash. Mary Frances was listed as a widow. [Apparently John died between 1906 and 1910 - no death record or burial location has ever been found]. 8. 13 Apr 1911, Flora, IL - Mary Frances marries her third husband (George Bentley), and Frances Jane marries her second husband, Charles (Creed) Wilder. 9. 1940, Los Angeles, CA - Howard was living in Los Angeles and had applied for a job with Lockheed Aircraft; they required a birth certificate. One was filled out by his mother, Frances, and filed with Clay Co, IL on 28 May 1941 showing his father to be "Eliga Cash". Eliga's occupation was listed as working for the railroad. 10. Elijah never remarried and when he died his estate was divided between his siblings. 11. Jun 1998, Flora, IL - In talking with relatives of Elijah, they were surprised that he had any descendants. They recalled a story when someone approached Elijah one day and said "you are my father". Elijah was taken back and reportedly said "get the hell out of here. I have no children". 12. In speaking with Howard's last living sibling, my Aunt Mae, I asked her if she knew anything about John R Blackburn. She replied "Mama [meaning Frances Jane Manning] always said 'he was an evil man'". Thoughts and opinions: Howard's father is most likely John R Blackburn, not Elijah Cash. 1. John R Blackburn - From court records we know that John R Blackburn had access and opportunity to father children with Frances Jane Manning. The 1900 census lists him as a "Saw Miller" so I'm guessing that he was a strong man, and not one that would leave his home after the affair with his step-daughter was disclosed. Therefore, he likely still had access and opportunity. The only real question in my mind is "when did he die?” He is in a photo taken probably during the summer of 1908 and according to the 1910 census he was dead. John's first wife, Sarah Boyd was only 17 (he was 26) when they married. His second wife, Laura Haynes, was only 18 (he was 34) when they married. John's third wife, my great grandmother Mary Frances Jennings, was 42 (he was 41) when they married. Frances Jane Manning was 19 and 23 when Henry and Howard were born. It would appear that John preferred younger women. 2. Elijah (Lige) Cash - Elijah was apparently displeased enough with the "situation" that he filed for divorce. The 1900 census shows him living in Flora with his mother, and his occupation was listed as "farm laborer", not a railroad employee. Later in life he seemed quite vocal, at least from the story told, that he had no children. I cannot imagine that he and Frances would have gotten together almost two years after their divorce to conceive a child. His name on the birth certificate took place 30+ years after the birth and he was likely never aware of the document. 3. Frances Jane Manning - To save embarrassment, she would be more likely to put Elijah's name on the birth certificate than to explain what really happened. She took the truth with her to the grave. Her comment about John Blackburn being 'an evil man' says a lot. 4. Ted Cash - I, the author, was horrified when I first learned through divorce records what had happened. I could not imagine my grandmother doing such a thing. But, I reasoned, or rationalized, that she was much weaker than John, and that it was more likely that John was the aggressor than my grandmother. If I had a choice I would rather go with the character of Elijah as my grandfather than that of John, but my conscience says that would not be correct. 5. DNA Testing - In October 2016 I (and later my brother) submitted our DNA to AncestryDNA.com for testing. So far [as of 13 Apr 2019] I have found 924 cousins that match our DNA; 625 are Blackburn cousins; 0 are Cash cousins. 6. Conclusion - John R Blackburn is the father of Howard Taft Cash. on (5 Jan 1909).3 |

| Memo | From 1925 to 1932 | Early years of working : His step-father, Creed Wilder, was an unemployed alcoholic and money was needed to feed the family, so Howard went out on his own to help feed the family. He worked at anything where he could make a few dollars and sent it home to help out. Mostly, he worked in the farm fields planting, cultivating, harvesting. When work finished in one area, he would hop on a boxcar and head to the next destination. "Riding the Rails" was both illegal and dangerous; but he felt it was necessary to help provide money for his mother's family. He worked in Kansas, South Dakota, Colorado, Minnesota, Iowa and Illinois - and we don't know where else. Finally, with the Great Depression in full force, and unable to find work elsewhere, he joined the US Army as a place to get a meal.6 |

| Memo (fam) | From Jun 1945 to Apr 1952 | Post-WW2: In Jun 1945, with WWII nearly over, Howard and Lillian decided to move back to Iowa and go farming. They stayed with Pete and Marie Lynott in Sioux City for a few months. In Nov 1945 they moved in with Earl and Vera Mortensen on their farm near Anthon, IA. On 3 Dec 1945 they bought a farm and applied for a loan from the Federal Land Bank. The farm was 120 acres located in Section 25 of Kedron Twsp, Woodbury Co, IA. (Located east and a little north of Anthon Iowa.) On 1 Mar 1946 they moved to that farm and stayed there until 1 Mar 1952. They sold the farm, sold most of their belonging at a farm auction, packed their remaining belongings into a trailer which they towed behind them to Los Angeles. |

| Memo (fam) | Mar 1960 | The Return to Los Angeles: Howard drove the entire distance himself, with only a few hours rest, arriving 2 or 3 days later -- this was before interstates. After arriving in LA, they stayed with his sister and family, May and Elmer Brown at 2400 Elm Grove St, Los Angeles, CA, then they found a rental house and moved to 2949 Partridge, Los Angeles, CA for about three weeks. During this time he worked for Lockheed Aircraft, again as a riveter. Too many changes had happened in California since 1945 and they were not happy there, so they packed up their belonging in a trailer and moved back to Iowa, again driving non-stop. They arrived back in Sioux City exactly 5 weeks after they had left, and only hours before the bridge into Sioux City from Nebraska was closed because of flooding. (I remember arriving late at night, and seeing nothing but water on both sides of the road when lightning would flash). They lived briefly with Pete & Marie Lynott, and then moved to a second story apartment at 1922 W 5th St, Sioux City, IA. During this period, he worked for Swift & Co as a laborer, and she worked for Aalfs-Baker Mfg. Co, 1007 Fourth St, Sioux City as a seamstress. On 17 Feb 1953 they purchased their 2nd farm (120 acres) located in Sections 6 & 7, Grant Twsp, Woodbury Co Iowa (between Anthon and Climbing Hill, IA). They lived on this farm until 1 Mar 1960. During bad crop years, he worked for Swift & Co, and she worked for Hovland Mfg. Co, both in Sioux City to supplement their income. |

| Memo | 10 Apr 2026 | Biography: Howard Taft Cash (1909–1968) Howard Taft Cash was born on January 4, 1909, in Flora, Clay County, Illinois, at the tail end of America’s Progressive Era—a time of reform, industrial growth, and social change. His early life, however, was shaped less by national optimism and more by family instability and economic hardship. Questions surrounding his parentage and the complicated relationships within his household placed him in a difficult social position from the very beginning, in a rural culture where reputation and family structure carried significant weight. Howard’s childhood coincided with a rapidly changing America. By the time he was a boy, the nation was entering the age of automobiles and electrification, yet rural Illinois still lagged behind in many of these conveniences. His formal education ended after the sixth grade, a common reality for children in struggling families who were needed to contribute economically. By the mid-1920s, he was already working to help support his household, reflecting the limited opportunities available to working-class youth at the time. As a young man, Howard’s life intersected directly with the hardships of the Great Depression. Even before the stock market crash of 1929, he had taken to “riding the rails,” traveling illegally on freight trains across multiple states in search of work. This dangerous and uncertain lifestyle was shared by thousands of men during the Depression years, as unemployment soared and steady work became nearly impossible to find. Howard’s willingness to endure such conditions speaks to both necessity and determination, as he sent money home to support his family. With economic conditions worsening, Howard eventually enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1932. His service at Fort Crook, Nebraska, provided stability—regular meals, shelter, and income—at a time when such security was far from guaranteed. His military service occurred during peacetime, but it placed him within a broader national effort to maintain readiness during an uncertain global period between the World Wars. In 1936, he married Lillian Mortensen, and together they began building a life during one of the most difficult economic periods in American history. In the late 1930s, Howard worked a variety of jobs, including agricultural labor and employment with the Works Progress Administration (WPA), a federal program created under Franklin D. Roosevelt to provide jobs during the Depression. The WPA played a crucial role in sustaining families like Howard’s by offering income through public works projects. In 1940, seeking better opportunities, Howard and his family moved to Los Angeles, California. This move coincided with the buildup to World War II, which transformed Southern California into a major center of defense production. Howard found work as a riveter for Lockheed Aircraft Corporation, contributing directly to the war effort by helping build P-51 fighter planes. Like many Americans, he became part of the vast industrial workforce that supported Allied victory. After the war, in 1945, Howard and Lillian returned to Iowa to pursue farming, joining a wave of Americans seeking stability and independence in rural life after years of upheaval. They purchased a 120-acre farm near Anthon, Iowa, and raised their family there. Farming in the postwar years, however, was not easy; fluctuating crop prices and unpredictable weather often required supplemental income, and both Howard and Lillian worked additional jobs during difficult seasons. In 1952, the family briefly attempted to return to California, but the rapid changes brought by postwar urban growth made it feel unfamiliar. Within weeks, they returned to Iowa, where Howard resumed farming and labor work. This pattern reflects the broader shift occurring in mid-20th-century America, as rural populations gradually declined while cities expanded and modernized. Later in life, Howard moved his family to Missouri, purchasing property along the historic U.S. Route 66. However, the construction of Interstate highways—part of the Interstate Highway System—soon diverted traffic away from Route 66, reducing its economic importance. This change symbolized the rapid modernization of America’s transportation infrastructure and its impact on local economies. Howard spent his final years in Springfield, Missouri, where he died on April 5, 1968, at the age of 59. His life spanned an era of extraordinary transformation—from the horse-and-buggy world of his birth to the jet age and early space exploration. Howard Taft Cash’s story is one of perseverance through hardship. From riding the rails during the Great Depression, to building aircraft during World War II, to farming and raising a family in the Midwest, his life reflects the resilience of a generation shaped by economic struggle, global conflict, and constant change. |
