Second St. died at 11:39 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 29, 1994, at Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria. Born Jan. 26, 1924, in Peoria to John M. and Anna Martha Hartwig Closen, he married Virginia Lee Weyand on Aug. 8, 1953, in Peoria. She survives. Also surviving are one son, Robin M. of Mapleton; two daughters, Virgie M. Frank of Washington and Julie A. Thompson of Canton; one brother, John of Pekin; seven sisters, Matilda Roth, Marie Calhoun, Mildred Honold, Clara Gudat and Ann Manns, all of Peoria, Viola Malson of Bartonville and Ruth Hall of Glasford; 12 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Three brothers, four sisters and two grandchildren preceded him in death. He was a World War II Navy veteran. He was a farmer for Krause's Highland Farms for 25 years.He then worked for Laborers Local 165 in Peoria for six years and later in maintenance for the Pekin Housing Authority. He retired in 1989. There will be no funeral services. Visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday at Abts Mortuary. Cremation will be accorded, and burial of ashes will be in War Veterans Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Charles H. Closen Memorial Fund, in care of Citizens Equity Federal Credit Union, 3515 Court St., Pekin 61554.¹

Memo	8 Sep 1972	Memo: The following is an excerpt from the Peoria Journal Star, dated Sept. 8, 1972, page A-14. The news item states the "A 47 year old man was killed and two others wounded in a shooting stemming from an argument in a South Side Liquor Store. Frederick Closen of 3322 W. Starr St., was pronounced dead at the scene by Coroner Horace Payton. Robert Jack Hagan, 59, of 2732 W. Nevada St., was in critical condition last night at St. Francis Hospital intensive care unit. Sam Cooley, 29, of 2608 Seibold st., was treated at St. Francis Hospital for a bullet wound to his arm. He was shot by a policeman in the vicinity at the time of the argument. Cooley was formally charged with murder, attempted murder, and aggravated battery. He is being held in the Peoria County Jail. The shooting took place in the South Town Liquor Store, 4019 S. Adams St., about 11:15 PM. Mrs. Buelah Closen, widow of the slain man and the salesclerk at the liquor store had told Cooley to stop using "vulgar" language. Police were told the Cooley continued to swear. Witnesses said Hagan went behind the counter and picked up a 32. caliber pistol. Police said Closen took the pistol away from Hagan before he could point it at anyone and put it in his pocket. Frede (the detective) said that Cooley then pulled a pistol out of his pocket and shot both Hagan and Closen. Police officers Paul Hilst, Wayne Copeland, and James Bridges entered the liquor store and ordered Cooley to drop his pistol. They warned Cooley a second time as he turned a face them. He reportedly raised the gun and pointed it at them. The officers fired four shots at Cooley, striking him once. Cooley fled out the back door, but was apprehended by a forth policeman. Cooley, an ex-convict, had been sentenced to five years in prison in January 1969 for burglary. He was out on parole at the time of the Closen shooting. According to the Peoria County Circuit Clerk's archive file Case #72-CF 3180 transcript dated Nov. 7, 1972, charges of murder were dismissed and Cooley pleaded guilty to two charges of Voluntary Manslaughter. He was subsequently sentenced to 10 to 20 years to the Illinois Department of Corrections by Judge Calvin R. Stone, 10th Judicial Circuit Court of Illinois. He was paroled (date unknown) again and on December 25, 1980, according to court document Case #81-CF122, he was charged with Reckless Conduct, Aggravated Assault, and Unlawful Use of a Weapon. He evidently fired a shotgun endangering bodily harm to Phillip T. Ellis. It was illegal for him to be in possession of the firearm within five years of his release from prison. These charges were dismissed with leave to reinstate. He was also involved in criminal activity in years 1981, 1982, 1984, 1985, and 1992 in Peoria County, IL. Cooley's date of birth is: Nov. 7, 1942 in Greenville, Miss. He died Nov. 7, 2002 in Peoria. Source: Peoria Journal Star Obituary.⁴

Memo	2006	Memo: A note about Matilda from her son Frank: Hedge Row School was a one room school house located along wht is now (2006) known as Airport Road. It was located where the North/South runway is for the Peoria Municipal Airport, Peoria, IL. Matilda received a very limited education since she was the oldest of her fourteen surviving siblings and had to stay home to help with chores on the small 10 acre farm. She once commented that about once every few weeks her father would hitch up the horse and wagon and it was a real treat to ride with him into Bartonville for supplies, mainly bulk flour, surag, and coffee. She said that they had an orchard, garden, and live stock; i.e.; two horses, hogs, poultry, and a milk cow. They had a smoke house where they smoked their meat such as bacon, hams, spareribs, loins, etc. They canned sufficient vegetables to carry them through the winter. They also had a cool cellar under the house where root vegetables and fruit could be preserved. A real treat was lard on home made bread sprinkled with a little sugar. They had "two holer" outhouse, modern for its time. They retrieved their water from a well. All this meant a lot of work for the oldest of John and Anna Closen's brood of children.⁵

"Vi" Malson, 80, of 4700 W. Whipp Ave. died at 9:20 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 20, 1995, at Proctor Hospital in Peoria. Born Sept. 16, 1915, in Stark County to John and Anna Hartwig Closen, she married Everett Malson on July 27, 1935, in Peoria. He died in 1975. Four brothers and five sisters also preceded her in death. Surviving are three daughters, Madelyn Butler of Hanna City, Darlene Kerley of West Peoria and Ethel Hall of Murraysville, Pa.; one brother, John Closen of Pekin; six sisters, Mathilda Roth, Marie Calhoun, Mildred Honold, Clara Gudat and Ann Manns, all of Peoria, and Ruth Hall of Glasford; 13 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren. She worked at the former Peoria State Hospital in Bartonville and later worked in the housekeeping department at Bel-Wood Nursing Home. She retired in 1977. She was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church in Peoria, Neighborhood House and Eagles Auxiliary. Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at her church. The Rev. Richard Horvath will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Endsley & Son Funeral Home in Bartonville, with recitation of the rosary at 5 p.m. by the general parish. Additional visitation will be one half-hour before services at the church. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery in West Peoria.²
