Jeffrey Rinkel

Jeffrey Lynn Rinkel, 52, of Hixson, died Sunday, May 2, 2010, at his home from an accidental fall.

Jeffrey was born Aug. 20, 1957, in Harlan, Iowa, to Rev. Charles T. Rinkel Jr. and Nelda Watkins Rinkel. As a self-proclaimed rebellious preachers son, Jeffrey lived in New Sharon, Des Moines, Spencer and Ottumwa, Iowa. In his youth he developed a passion for bicycling and often participated in touring with his best friend, the Rev. Jonathan Gaul, on Iowa farm roads and in the Des Moines Registers annual bike ride (RAGBRAI).

Jeffrey (a 1975 graduate of Ottumwa High School) earned both his bachelors and master of arts degrees from the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls. During his undergraduate years he received a scholarship for his creative talents in costuming. He continued to pursue his education by working on doctoral studies at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. Jeff received teaching degrees in the fields of theater, public speaking and English.

On May 26, 1984, he married Vanessa Vaal in Ottumwa. They resided in Cedar Falls, where Jeffrey was a middle school teacher at Price Laboratory School and director of the theater department from 1981-85. The couple moved to Houston, Texas, in 1985, where Jeffrey taught middle and high school acting and theater arts in Klein Independent School District for two years. Teaching as adjunct professor at Houston Community College sparked his love for teaching public speaking and theater arts at the college level. He began working at Prairie View A&M University, a historically Black college, in Prairie View, Texas, in 1987. He continued there until 1992 as associate professor of speech and coach of the speech team. From 1992-1995 Jeffrey took the opportunity to teach at West Virginia Wesleyan in Buckhannon, W.Va., and also began his doctoral studies in Communications at Ohio University.

Jeffrey was an associate professor at Chattanooga State from 1996 until the time of his death. During his tenure at Chattanooga State he taught public speaking, nonverbal communication and introduction to the theater and coached the speech team. Jeffrey was passionate about theater and enjoyed teaching others the art of public speaking.

Jeffreys hobbies and interests included bicycling, tinkering on cars especially his 1963 Cadillac restoration of historic homes, listening to classical music and the theater arts. He enjoyed sewing and shared his gift by making costumes and articles of clothing for his wife and children.

Jeffrey was a gentle and peace loving man with a huge heart. He had the greatest respect for others from all walks of life. He was energetic and had a passion for life. His greatest love was his family, especially his two teenage children, Mariah and Jon.

Jeffrey was a member and lay eucharistic minister at St. Peters Episcopal Church, where his family will celebrate his life with family and friends.

He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Vanessa Vaal Rinkel; and their two children, Mariah Gabrielle Rinkel and Jonathan David Rinkel, of Hixson. Additional survivors include his parents, Charles T. Rinkel Jr. and Nelda Watkins Rinkel, of Johnston, Iowa; his siblings, Pamela Rinkel (Larry) Deeds, of Des Moines, Iowa, and Timothy Rinkel, of Rochester, Minn.

Funeral service will be held 6 p.m. Thursday at St. Peters Episcopal Church, 848 Ashland Terrace, Chattanooga, TN 37415, with the Rev. Carter Paden III officiating.

Graveside services are 10:30 a.m. Friday in Chattanooga Memorial Park.

Visitation is 5-7 p.m. Wednesday at St. Peters Episcopal Church.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Book of Remembrance at St. Peters Episcopal Church.
