Memo | 1802 | The following is from page 379 of History of Brown County 1883 W.H. Beers and Co.
Israel was an early settler of Pleasant Township. He brought his wife, Charity, and twelve children to Brown County from Bardstown, Nelson Co., KY in 1802 or 1803. His father's family was farming on Long Island during the Rev. War. When the British took possession, his father was given the choice of swearing allegience to the King or losing the property. He chose the latter and moved his family to Chatham, New Hampshire and later, Israel came West. Israel lived in Union Township for a year, then purchased 200 acres off the north part of the Rhea Survey, about two miles east of Georgetown, and moved to it. The land was not cleared, but he found an abandoned cabin of some previous squatter and he lived in it for 18 months. He then built himself a substantial log cabin. He had been a house carpenter, but devoted himself exclusively to farming. He died at the home place at a good old age. William Jennings, the youngest child, lived in the same house at the time of publishing (1883) and was 82 years old.4 |
