(Note: at the time this was written, she was about 80 years old, and her eyesight was failing) My mom (Meta Gronewold) and dad (Helmer Huisman) were born in Germany. Mom hired out as a maid and Dad hired himself out to run a cargo ship up and down the river (in Germany). He was always dreaming of coming to America. The cargo wasn't doing to well. He was saving his money to pay for the trip. Mom's two brothers were here already & earged (her spelling) him to come. He had mother as his girl friend he told her when he was settled on a farm he would send her money to come to America too. Dad settled near Forrest (Illinois) as farm laborer he saved his money & took farm implements as wages or horses, cows, and pigs till he was ready to farm. He had moms brothers write to mom and send her the money for her to come to America. She worked as a maid till Dad married her & moved to the farm dad rented. Their first Baby was born dead. The next 2 years later a son died of a broken apendix or so they thought. He was walking in a furrow behind Dads' plow he cried was bent over with pain. Dad carried him home but he died in his arms. My Bro Allie (this is what it said, That's Elmer) was Born 1901 near Sibley The next 5 girls all two years apart were the next 5 children. Till 1901 we moved to a farm two miles north of Sibley. That's where I spent my childhood a lot of memories in those 18 years. Dad retired from farming in 1920. Your Dad (Edward Towner, Sr) & I were married in 1922, two years Eddie was born 1924 then 7 years later Roxie was Born 1931, then in 1934 Dolores was born in my Dads house and in the same bedroom and same bed lived with Dad 10 years mother (Meta) died in 1923, Dad (Helmer) in 1933. We moved to Litchfield in 1934. Laurie was 10 months old. We lived in Litchfield from 34 to 63 in Springfield 1963 to 1990.1 |

Obituary | | Obituary: The obituary for Helmer was recorded. Helmer J Huisman Helmer J Huisman was born October 3, 1852 in Thinerfehn, Amt Aurich Ostfriesland. He came to America about 1878 and located at Forrest, Ill. On March 2, 1885, he married Meta nee Gronewald. They lived on a farm near Forrest until 1901 at which time they moved to Sibley, where they followed ???? former occupation until 1920 when they retired and moved to Sibley. The union was bless with eight children. His wife and two children preceded him in death. In middle-age he suffered a stroke, from which he never completely recovered. This was followed by another stroke in 1908. For many years he had not been well, having suffered several other attacks later in life. After a serious illness of several weeks he departed this life Thursday, February 16, at the age of 80 years, 4 months and 13 days. Although his health was gravely impaired and he had great difficulty in getting around, he frequently found his way into the house of God, leaving you an example worthy of imitation. He leaves to mourn his departure Mrs. Minnie Farney, of Pontiac; Mrs Lizzie Beck, of Drommond, Wis; Mrs Lena Ross, of Kenosba, Wis; and Mrs Annie Brandt; Mrs. Grace Towner and Elmer Huisman, of Sibley, and ten grandchildren.
