Memo (fam)Memo: [From the Ocheyedan Centennial Book, 1891-1991]
Louis Leckband, son of William and Wilhelminna Glade Leckband, was born at Adair, Iowa, in 1890. His first years were spent there and in the Exira, Iowa area until the family moved to Ocheyedan in 1903, where they farmed. The family then moved to Dayton, Oregon, in 1908, where they cleared land so they could farm it. In 1916, the family moved back to Ocheyedan, where they once again engaged in farming. In 1917, Louis married Emma Riebesehl and began farming in the Ocheyedan area. Emma was born in Webster City in 1893, moving to Horton Township with her family in 1894. Louis and Emma farmed a number of farms until 1927, when they moved to the Riebesehl homestead where they farmed until their retirement in 1955. They then moved to Worthington, Minnesota, and lived there until their deaths, Emma in 1977, and Louis in 1982. They had both resided in Lake Haven Nursing Home.
Emma was a very active farm woman who helped milk cows, helped with haying and harvest, shocked grain, raised chickens, ducks and geese, besides having a large vegetable garden, raspberry and strawberry beds, plus apple and plum orchards. She was an excellent cook and horsewoman. At the age of nine, her father sent her out to plow with the sulky and a three horse hitch.
Louis and Emma's first years of farming were very difficult because of cool, wet years with severe winters. After moving to the Riebesehl half section, they hired a man, and raised hogs and dairy cattle, and later fed cattle. They were progressive farmers, following information from Iowa State about crop rotation and balanced feed formulas, using their own grain. They were among the early farmers in the area who planted soybeans. Other crops were corn, oats, barley, alfalfa and clover.
Louis was a dedicated fisherman and later a game hunter. His trophies included moose, deer, bear, antelope, elk and caribou. His cousin, Alfred Hattendorf was often his fishing and hunting companion. As a grandfather he enjoyed taking his grandsons camping on fishing trips with them. He truly loved the outdoors and all of nature.
Louis took an active part in the community, serving on the Co-op Elevator board, as a township officer, and also in Farm Bureau. He held offices in the Zion Lutheran Church in Horton Township, of which he and his family were all members.
To this union were born four children. Eunice married Reinard Wulkow and lives at Sac City, Iowa. Phyllis married Marcus Rueter (deceased). Phyllis lives at Ocheyedan. Stanley married Vivian Oleson and lives at Dewey, Arizona. James married Maureen Rehborg and lives at Worthington, Minnesota.8
