Memo(2011)Memo: [from the Wassman Family Tree on Ancestry.com]

Elmer Edward Griesse passed away May 15th in Good Samaritan nursing home Yakima, Washington. The 6th of 10 children, he was born in Meinert, Missouri on February 7th 1919 to Lydia Wassmann and August Griesse, a Lutheran pastor. He followed the same vocation as his father, together with 5 of his brothers. After finishing Concordia Seminary in St. Louis and obtaining his Master's in History at Washington University, he embarked on a missionary career in southern India. He began his missionary work after WWII during the turbulent period of the Indian Independence movement led by Gandhi. On furlough, he met his future wife, Florine, who was working in the Lutheran Mission Office in St. Louis. She accompanied him for 12 of the 19 years he was in India. Mark, their first son, was born in 1953 and is today pastor of Peace Lutheran Church in Selah, Washington. Margaret, their second child, was born in 1958 and is currently residing in Tacoma, where she and her husband teach at the University of Washington. In 1963, they returned to the United States and served congregations in Idaho, Iowa, Nebraska, and Mississippi. Tolerant and idealist, Elmer emphasized the Theology of the Cross and its Christ-centered interpretation of the Gospel. He loved singing in the choir and until his final days, he sang the bass line of hymns. His favorite composer was Johann Sebastian Bach and his favorite poet was Paul Gerhardt.1

MemoMemo: [from the Wassmann Family Tree on Ancestry.com]

The Rev. Robert L. Griesse was a Lutheran minister who reached out to other faiths." He really was a pioneer in the ecumenical conversation. At a time when many in the ministry were not particularly open to people of other religions, he easily made friendships with those of other faiths," said the Rev. John Stendhal, who succeeded the Rev. Griesse as pastor of the Lutheran Church of the Newtons in Newton Centre. The Rev. Griesse, who held joint services with Trinity Episcopal Church in Newton and was the host of the ecumenical radio show on WBZ, died of complications of cancer Sept. 8 in Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis. He was 80.The Rev. Richard Koenig of Cromwell, Conn., a fellow Lutheran minister and friend of Rev Griesse for 65 years, said: "He was a man who reached out to others and made everybody feel comfortable. He was put on this earth to keep people together." Born in Alma, Mo., he was the son of the Rev. August and Lydia Griesse. He was one of 10 children, and five of his six brothers also became ministers." His older brother Richard would have become a minister, too, but he graduated from the seminary during the Great Depression and only two of 100 graduates got callings to congregations," said Rev. Griesse's wife, Rosalie (Keller).R ichard became a farmer in Nebraska. His brothers, including Robert, worked on the farm in the summer. In return, he paid their tuition to the seminary.R ev. Griesse graduated from Concordia Theological Seminary in St. Louis. While in the seminary, he sang in the St. Louis Bach Chorus, where he met his future wife, who was also a member.Aft er his ordination in 1952, Rev. Griesse was assistant pastor of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Kansas City, Mo. He then accepted an assignment from the Atlantic District of the Lutheran Church to start a church in East Brunswick, N.J.After canvassing 3,000 homes, Christ Memorial Lutheran Church opened on the Sunday before Thanksgiving in 1956 with 222 people in attendance. When he left in 1966 to become pastor of the Lutheran Church of the Newtons, the congregation numbered 800." It was his proudest achievement," said his wife.Rev. Griesse was pastor of the Lutheran Church of the Newtons for nearly 29 years until his retirement in 1994.For several years, he held joint services with Trinity Episcopal Church in Newton. He and the minister at Trinity also switched pulpits for a month each summer. In a story published in The Boston Globe in 1991, Rev. Griesse said the intent of the relationship was not the creation of one organization, but of "the mutual recognition of each other as valid while remaining distinct. It is a vision that recognizes the diversity of ways in which the spirit of God moves people. It recognizes that it is not our denominations that make us Christian but the Gospel." For more than two decades, Rev. Griesse co-hosted the WBZ Radio show "Intersect" with a priest and a rabbi, often Father Robert Bullock and Rabbi Sam Kenner. The Sunday morning program examined current issues from different religious perspectives." He got fan mail from as far away as Canada and Ohio," his wife said.In 1982, he took a sabbatical to study Namibia's fight for independence from South Africa, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and the chasm between East and West Germany." He was concerned that the Lutheran Church never spoke out against the Nazis and he wanted to see how the church was dealing with other oppressive regimes," Rosalie Griesse said. His study earned him a master's degree in sacred theology from the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago.Af ter the sabbatical, he returned to his parish in Newton." He was a very humble, sweet, and caring man," said Stendahl. "Parish ministry can sometimes be a bruising undertaking, but he took those blows and learned to live with the criticisms and disappointments as well as the blessings that came his way." After retiring in 1994, Rev. Griesse served as interim pastor at parishes in Marblehead, Natick, and Warwick, R.I. In 2004, he moved to Golden Valley, Minn., to be near his daughters." He was not a man who sought attention," said Koenig. " He didn't light up a room, he sidled into it. But when he arrived, he made everybody feel better. "In addition to his wife, Rev. Griesse leaves three daughters, Anne Feldman of Los Angeles, Liz Woodworth of Minneapolis, and Sarah of Woodbury, Minn.; a brother, Elmer of Olympia, Wash; two sisters, Doris Snyder of Kansas City, Mo., and Lois Hoyer of Bloomer, Wis.; and five grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Lutheran Church of the Newtons.1

Note(1900)Note: (1900). were born in Strawn, IL and moved to Rockwell City, IA with their folks and later, when their parents moved to Lewisville, they went to school in town. As they got older and it was time to find an outside job, they headed west to Washington to their older brother's, John Crown. John got them jobs working for the railroad building a new line in the mountains of Idaho near St Regis and St Marie's. They lived in a tent camp in the mountains, next to a river and the railroad. A travelling man brought a bear that would box to the camp. He would pay a cash prize to anyone that could last so many rounds with the bear. Ed and George thought they could beat the bear, but they were wrong and the bear got the best of them. They had pitched their tents right along the edge of the river. The tents had wooden floors and one night they woke up because the floor and their cots were rocking. The water was almost up to the top of their cots. There had been a storm further up in the mountains and the water was coming down the canyon fast. They just got out of the tents and the tents were washed away. They barely made it to high ground. Upon their return to Minnesota, Ed and George began farming.1

Mrs. Fred Hartwig (Elsie Catharina Gronewald) was born in Germany June 15, 1865. On the 5th of July she was presented to her Lord in holy baptism. After spending her childhood days under the care of her parents she was united in holy matrimony to Marcus Nitz on the 12th of February 1887, in the Lutheran church at Aurich, Germany. To this union three children were born, namely: Rieka, Gertrude and Folkart. On January 19, 1895, her husband preceded her in death. Then she, together with her three children immigrated to America and settled at Wing, Livingston county, Ill. There she was two years later, on December 7, 1896, united in marriage to Fred Hartwig. To this union were born eight children: Reinhard, John, Henry, Benjamin, Margaret, Lenora and Anna, one baby dying in infancy.

In 1907 the family moved to Ocheyedan, where they have made their home until the present time. Mrs Hartwig was taken ill in the first part of Dec 1928 with gall stone trouble. This proved to be a lingering sickness until the middle of September, when she suffered a stroke which made her condition serious. It was at this time when she also lost her eyesight. After consulting several physicians she was placed under the care of Dr Moe of Sioux Falls. She was taken to his hospital last Wednesday, Nov 13 in order to give her the best of care possible, but her Lord releaved her from her sufffering at 2:45 Friday, Nov 15, at the age of 64 years and 5 months. Mrs Hartwig was a faithful member of the Melvin Lutheran church.

She leaves to mourn her departure, her loving husband and her children: Mr. and Mrs. Jess Turner of Clair, Canada, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Lottman, Logensport, Ind., Mr. and Mrs. Folkert Nitz, O'Dell, Ill., Reinhard and John of Wood Lake, MN., Mr. and Mrs. Henry Hartwig of Ocheyedan, Margaret of Wood Lake MN., Mr. and Mrs. Fred Drenkow of Melvin, and Benjamin and Anna still at home, and sixteen grandchildren besides a large number of more distant relatives and friends.

Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. G.Goeken Tuesday afternoon, November 19, at one o'clock at the home, and at two o'clock at the church. The remains were laid to rest in the Baker township cemetery. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Hartwig of Peoria, Ill., the latter a brother of Mr. Fred Hartwig, attended the funeral. O16
Memo10 Apr 2026Biography: Elise Catherina Gronewold Hartwig (1865–1929)

Elise Catherina Gronewold was born on June 15, 1865, in Neu Sandhorst near Aurich, in the East Frisian region of Lower Saxony, Germany. She was baptized shortly afterward at St. Lamberti Lutheran Church in Aurich, entering a world shaped by strong Lutheran faith, rural traditions, and modest economic conditions.

Her childhood took place during a time of transition in Germany. The region would soon be influenced by the sweeping political changes leading to the unification of Germany under the Franco-Prussian War, though for families like hers, daily life remained centered on work, church, and family survival.

In 1887, Elise married Marcus Johannas Jacobus Nitz in Aurich. The couple had three children: Folkert, Gertrude, and Louise (Reka). Their life together, however, was tragically short. Marcus died in January 1895, leaving Elise a widow at just 29 years old with three young children.

Faced with limited prospects in Germany and encouraged by family already in America, Elise made the difficult decision to emigrate. In July 1895, she boarded the steamship Willehad with her three children and crossed the Atlantic to the United States. Like many immigrants of that era, she traveled in steerage, enduring cramped and difficult conditions during the voyage. Her destination was Illinois, where her brothers had already established themselves.

Her journey was part of the broader wave of German immigration to the United States in the late 19th century, when millions sought better economic opportunities and land ownership in America. Upon arrival, she settled near Wing in Livingston County, Illinois, joining an established German-American farming community.

In December 1896, she married Fredrick Peters Hartwig. Together they built a new life, blending families and raising eight additional children. Elise’s household was large and busy, combining children from both marriages into one extended family.

Around 1907, the family moved to Osceola County, Iowa, where Fred purchased farmland. This move reflected a larger pattern of Midwestern settlement, as families sought more affordable land and greater opportunity on the expanding agricultural frontier.

Elise’s life on the Iowa farm would have been demanding. As a farm wife and mother of a large household, her responsibilities included cooking, preserving food, sewing, caring for livestock, gardening, and raising children. Her earlier experience as a widow likely contributed to the strength and resilience she brought to this new chapter of life.

She lived through a period of rapid change in the United States, including the industrial expansion of the late 19th century and the hardships of World War I. During the war years, German-American families like hers sometimes faced suspicion and pressure to assimilate, particularly in language and cultural practices.

In her later years, Elise suffered from declining health, including gallstone disease and eventually a stroke that affected her vision. She was taken to a hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, where she died on November 15, 1929.

Her death came just weeks after the onset of the Great Depression, marking the beginning of one of the most difficult economic periods in American history—one her children and grandchildren would endure.

Elise was buried in Baker Township Cemetery near Melvin, Iowa. She was remembered as a devoted wife, mother, and faithful member of her Lutheran church.

Her life story is one of remarkable courage and resilience: a young widow who crossed an ocean with three children, rebuilt her life in a new country, and helped establish a large and enduring family. Through hardship, determination, and faith, she played a central role in shaping the generations that followed.

Memo10 Apr 2026Biography: Folkert Janssen Gronewold (1814 – after 1889)

Folkert Janssen Gronewold was born on October 19, 1814, in Sandhorst near Aurich, in the East Frisian region of Lower Saxony, Germany. He was baptized a few days later at St. Lamberti Lutheran Church in Aurich, reflecting the central role of the Lutheran church in daily life and community identity.

He was born during a turbulent period in European history. Just months after his birth, the Congress of Vienna reshaped Europe following the Napoleonic Wars, establishing political boundaries that would influence German states for decades. Although far removed from the centers of power, rural families like the Gronewolds lived within the broader consequences of these changes.

Folkert grew up in a traditional agrarian society. His occupation is listed as a Warsmann (farmer) and later as a colonist farmer, indicating that he likely worked newly developed or reclaimed land—common in parts of northern Germany where marshlands were drained and cultivated. Farming in this region required persistence and adaptability, as soil conditions and weather could be challenging.

In 1844, he married Jacobine (Ulrike) Sophia Maecken at St. Lamberti Lutheran Church. Together they built a family in Neu Sandhorst, raising several children, though like many families of the time, they experienced the heartbreak of losing children in infancy.

Folkert’s adult life unfolded during a time of gradual but significant change in Germany. The mid-19th century saw increasing economic pressure on rural populations, including land shortages and limited opportunities for advancement. These pressures contributed to the massive wave of German emigration to America during this period.

He lived through the revolutionary unrest of the Revolutions of 1848, when widespread protests and demands for political reform swept across German states. While there is no record of his direct involvement, these events shaped the social and political environment of his lifetime.

Later in life, he witnessed the unification of Germany under Prussian leadership following the Franco-Prussian War. This marked the creation of the German Empire, bringing national unity but also reinforcing economic and social structures that continued to challenge rural families.

Unlike some of his children and relatives, Folkert appears to have remained in Germany throughout his life. However, his family became part of the larger migration story—most notably through his daughter Elise, who would emigrate to the United States and establish a new branch of the family there.

Folkert died sometime after April 8, 1889. His life represents the final generation of the Gronewold family to live entirely in Germany before the family’s transition to America.

He was a farmer shaped by tradition, faith, and the rhythms of rural life. Though he remained in his homeland, his legacy continued across the Atlantic through his children, contributing to the broader story of German-American settlement in the Midwest.

Memo(1883)Memo: Folmine Johanne, born in Germany in 1882, was the fifth child born to John and Asa. No one had ever heard of Folmine until 1990 when his birth certificate was found in a book belonging to George Gronewold. No one can ever remember their folks talking about this family member. The birth certificate was written in German and upon translation it states "a child of feminine sex was born", however, any other reference to the children of John and Asa Gronewold is that of six sons and three daughters, making Folmine a boy and also the middle name "Johanne" is of male gender. So a mystery does remain whether this child was a son or a daughter.

At the time of Folmine's birth, John and Asa lived at Funnixer Neuen, Mitteldeich, Germany. Cora (George) Gronewold had written in her notes that a child, "little John" died when he was two and a half years old. There was no verification that this was Folmine and there is no mention of his emmigrating from Germany with the family in 1883, so it was surmised he died in infancy. However, in 1991, another clue was found. A vaccination certificate was located stating Folmine had been vaccinated in June 1883. That had to be just a few months before the family left for America. Did Folmine die from the vaccination, did he die aboard ship, or did he die in America at two and a half years as Cora Gronewold indicated. And why did none of his brothers or sisters ever mention him? So, the mystery continues.1

Upon their return to Minnesota, Ed and George began farming.3

NoteNote: . A note on Surnames: In Ostfriesland definite surnames were taken in the 1800's.  Before then most families used "patronymics", that is, they were named after their father.  So the son of a man called Jan got the surname Janssen, the son of a man ca

Jan Folkers Gronewold, was known as Jan Folkers or Johann Folker(t)s before the family took the surname Gronewold in the 1800's. Even his death record in 1849 does not show the surname Gronewold because he was known in the village as Johann Folkerts.

The Gronewold family first appears in Sandhorst in 1814 when Folkert Janssen Gronewold was born in Sandhorst as the eldest son of Jan Folkerts Gronewold and of his wife Goeste Hedden (in her death record called Goste Heeren)

A note on Ostfriesland: Ostfriesland was a Principality of its own until 1744 when it became a part of Prussia. From 1807 to 1810 Ostfriesland belonged to Holland, then to France until 1815 and became a part of Hannover in 1815. In 1866 Hannover (including Ostfriesland) became a province of Prussia and in 1946 a part of Niedersachsen (Lower Saxony). The term "Ostfriesland" is still used today for the Aurich-Emden-Leer-Wittmund etc. area but it is no longer a state of its own.1
