There was also 1 1/2 morgen which belonged to the farm, but they had to pay a hereditary tenant lease on that. The livestock on the farm were 5 cows, 2 steers, 1 sow and 5 pigs. There were also several buildings, a cow stable with room for 6 animals, 4 pigsties with sheep stables and a calf and steer stable in the barn. Heinrich Piepho bought in October 1911, 2 horses from August Rabe so that he could take care of his agricultural chores much faaster. Also in 1911, there was the Foot and Mouth disease in the villiage. He also bought another electric motor for the chaffcuter which had been in existence since 1895. Herman and Louise returned to Iowa after they married, and built a comfortable home on the virgin prairie land. In 1899 Herman Bremer purchased 128 acres in the north west corner of section 18, Fairview township for $3575. This land was used for pasture in the early years. Prior to the road grading on the north side of section 18, the steep hill was the site of hill climbing competition for cars. According to reports, few cars ever made the forward climb, but the competition was always challenging. Tobogganing, skiing, and sledding were the winter activities on the hill. This land is now (1997) farmed by Wayne Bremer. As Herman's family increased, the house became cramped, so remodeling was done and finally in the early 1900's several rooms were added. During late 1929 Herman and Louise built a new smaller home. At that time Harry and Emma Bremer moved into the big house. In the mid 1930's the smaller house was moved one half mile east to Fairview section 18. Herman, Louise and Albert lived there until 1939 when Herman and Louise moved into Ocheyedan. In 1917 Herman bought another 160 acres, this quarter was in section 24 of Horton township, the northeast corner. This farm was bought for $24,000. The farm became Carl Bremer's, then Dennis Bremer's and at present (1997) is farmed by Keith Bremer. Herman and Louise Bremer were active members of Zion Lutheran Church throughout their life in Iowa. Herman held several offices in the church, seventeen years as an Elder. He also held township offices. O1

Burial in Horton Cemetery; Resident of this community since 1895

After a lingering illness of several months, Mrs Louise Bremer, nee Piepho, wife of Herman Bremer, deceased, died Monday evening, September 7, 1942, at her residence in Ocheyedan, where she was lovingly cared for by her children, sister and Mrs Willie, as well as close friends.
Mrs Bremer was born August 16, 1873 at Dyer, IN. There she was baptized in early childhood and joined ther church by the rite of confirmation in her youth. She has been a faithful and consistent member of the Lutheran church, always lending a ready hand and a regular attendant of divine services Sunday after Sunday.
In the spring of 1895 she was united in marriage to Herman Bremer of Horton Township at Eagle Lake, IL. They young bridal couple came to Horton Township immediately and made their home on the farm Mr Bremer had acquired and made ready for their home and where they lived and raised a family of five children, until they retired in 1939 to Ocheyedan. About two years later, in October of 1941, Mr Bremer died. Soon after this Mrs Bremer began to fail in health.
Mrs Bremer leaves to mourn her death her children: Carl, Albert, Mrs Edna Philiph, Harry and Mrs Ora Reuter; and 18 grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Witte of Blue Island, IL, and Mrs Minnie Consoer of Horton Township; one brother, August Piepho, of Dyer, IN.
The funeral services were held at the Horton Lutheran church last Thursday, where her pastor, Rev E J Kallsen, officiated. Burial was made beside her husband in Zion Lutheran cemetery. O Photo17
Memo10 Apr 2026Biography: Louise Piepho Bremer (1873–1942)

Louise Piepho was born on August 16, 1873, in Dyer, Lake County, Indiana. She was born during a period of rapid growth and change in the United States, just a few years after the American Civil War, when the country was expanding westward and rebuilding its economy. Her parents, Chris Piepho and Katharina Sophie Dorothee Seegers, were part of a German-American community that placed strong emphasis on faith, family, and hard work.

She was baptized on September 21, 1873, at Zion United Church of Christ in Hanover Township, Indiana, and later confirmed there on April 3, 1887. Her upbringing reflected the traditions of rural Midwestern life in the late 19th century—centered on church, family responsibilities, and practical skills necessary for maintaining a household.

In February 1895, Louise married Herman John Bremer at St. John’s Lutheran Church of Eagle Lake near Beecher, Illinois. Shortly after their marriage, the young couple moved west to Osceola County, Iowa, joining the many families who were settling and developing the rich prairie farmland of the Midwest. At that time, much of the land was still “virgin prairie,” requiring years of labor to break and cultivate.

Louise’s early married life was defined by the demands of farm living. Establishing a household on the prairie meant long days of physical work—cooking on wood or coal stoves, hauling water, preserving food, sewing clothing, and helping wherever needed on the farm. Modern conveniences such as electricity, indoor plumbing, and refrigeration were still decades away.

In 1899, Herman purchased 128 acres in Fairview Township, and Louise helped build a home and raise a family there. As their family grew—eventually including five children: Carl, Albert, Edna, Harry, and Ora—the house was expanded in the early 1900s to accommodate their needs. Like many farm wives of her generation, Louise’s work was essential to the success of the household, though often unrecorded. She managed the home, raised the children, and contributed to the daily operation of the farm.

Louise lived through a time of significant agricultural and technological change. During her early years on the farm, nearly all work was done by hand or with horses. Over time, mechanization slowly began to appear, though change came gradually. The introduction of automobiles and improved roads began to reduce the isolation of rural communities, even if early vehicles struggled on rough terrain—such as the steep hill on their property that became known locally for automobile climbing contests.

In 1917, during World War I, the family expanded their farming operations with the purchase of an additional 160 acres. The war years brought increased demand for agricultural products, but also uncertainty and change, as young men left rural communities and farm families had to adapt.

The years of prosperity were followed by hardship during the Great Depression. Like many farm families, the Bremers faced falling crop prices and financial strain. Despite these challenges, they remained on their land and continued their way of life through determination and careful management.

In late 1929, as the Depression began, Herman and Louise built a smaller home, and their son Harry and his wife Emma moved into the larger farmhouse. During the mid-1930s, the smaller house was moved a half mile east—an example of the practical ingenuity common among farm families of that era. Louise, Herman, and their son Albert continued to live there until 1939, when they retired from farming and moved into Ocheyedan.

Throughout her life, Louise was a devoted and active member of the Lutheran church. Her obituary described her as “a faithful and consistent member… always lending a ready hand and a regular attendant of divine services.” The church was not only a place of worship but also the center of social and community life, especially in rural areas.

After more than four decades on the farm, Louise spent her final years in Ocheyedan. Her husband Herman passed away in October 1941. Not long after his death, Louise’s health began to decline.

She died on September 7, 1942, at the age of 67, during the early months of World War II, a time when the nation was once again at war and rural families were contributing to the effort through agricultural production and community support.

Louise was cared for in her final illness by her children, her sister, and close friends—a reflection of the strong family and community bonds that had shaped her entire life.

Funeral services were held at Zion Lutheran Church in Horton Township, and she was laid to rest beside her husband in the church cemetery.

Louise Piepho Bremer’s life reflects the essential but often unrecognized role of farm women in American history. She helped transform prairie land into a working farm, raised a family through times of prosperity and hardship, and lived through a period that saw the United States evolve from a rural, agrarian society into a modern nation. Her strength, faith, and dedication were foundational to the generations that followed.
