| Note (fam) | (1887) | Note: Heinrich (Henry) Conrad Bremer and Marie Dorothea (Friedricka) Drangmeister (1887). The Drangmeisters came west to Crete, IL by wagon and horses. They settled on a farm just north of the Bremers. Over the years their farm and the Bremer farm has been sold and built up with houses. In 1990, Mrs Minnie (Bremer) Wolf, Christoph's daughter On Dec 31 1877 the State of Iowa deeded land to the Sioux City and St. Paul Railroad. On Nov 1 1882 the north one half of section 13, Horton township was sold to an individual for $1300. Six days later the land was sold for $1840 and one day later for $2160. Finally on Dec 29 1890 the land was sold to Heinrich Bremer of Crete, Illinois for $3820. The legal papers were recorded in the Osceola County Courthouse on Mar 19 1891. Whether Henry Bremer (son of Heinrich) brought the legal papers for the land purchase to the Osceola Courthouse is not known, but it is known that he was here in 1892. Henry started farming and was joined in the spring of 1894 by his brother Herman. The two men worked together that year. In 1897 the land was purchased from Heinrich Bremer by the two brothers, each purchasing a quarter section for $2000. Henry bought the west quarter and Herman the east one. The land still belongs to the Bremer family and is farmed by descendants. Martha Bremer (Allen's wife) and Tom Bremer living on the respective farms.12 |
| Memo | 19 Dec 1899 | Memo: Endor, Will Co, Ill. December 19, 1899 (Note: Apparently sent to the US Pension Office) Gentlemen: I take the liberty to address a few lines to you to ask you, whether it is so, as the Attorney's always told my dec'd husband, that every soldier is entitled to a pension, - my dear husband never said anything about pension. In 1890 when he was very sick, a letter arrived from Chicago in which he was asked whether he was drawing pension. He was so ill, that I did not care to show him the letter. A second and third letter arrived, and as he was somewhat better, I read all the letters to him. His friends advised him to answer the letters, saying that he had earned a pension, as well as many others, having served three years in the war. Gentlemen, I beg you, please return to me my marriage certificate, which I never would have sent ??? the certificate of Death, had I not been told that if I would not take it (money) somebody else would. Gentlemen, I write German because I can express myself better than in English, and I cannot let the attorney's write for me any more. My dear husband is at rest - relieved from all sickness and Pain. He was a good husband and a good father to my children. We have lived happily together for 31 years, and God blessed our union with 10 children, five of which are still living. Gentlemen, I did not know my husband before the war. I lived with my parents in Pittsburg, PA and in 1862 my parents moved to this place, and we were neighbors of his parents. In 1865, he returned from the war, afflicted with chills and fever. We became acquainted and on the 4 of October 1866 we were married. The first 2 weeks following our marriage, he was so sick that I expected his death every minute. He vomited blood and passed blood in the stool. However, God made him feel better again, but he always suffered internal pains until he became afflicted with hernia and always had to wear a bandage. I do not know what year it was. He always suffered very much with Rhumatism, and Bilious Convulsions and his gall turned into small stones in Consequence of which, he suffered terrible pains. The doctors said that his affliction was the result of the hardship of his 3 years service in the war. He always recovered so far that we could work together our small farm, and God blessed our work so that he could put his head to rest, as a true father of his family, but alas, too soon. He lived 11 months after the stroke of cerebral apoplexy. Please do not let any other person take the pension of my husband Henry Bremer. I will be satisfied with even a little. (Signed) Fredericke Bremer Endor, Will Co, Ill. Please do not send your answer to Crown Point, Ind. - it takes too long before I get it. (Translated from the German - Jan 11, 1900) (Stamped by) US Pension Office - Jan 13, 1900. O10 |
| Memo | 5 Jan 1900 | Memo: Gentlemen: Pardon me for writing in German, I am better able to express myself in this language. I would have answered sooner but, I have been so deistressed, and put off writing from day to day. I will thankfully receive any small allowance you may grant me, and if not, then please inform me so. My dear husband died on the 1st of September 1897, and since then, I had to take care of a sick uncle, who is near 80 years old. With regards, Friedricke Bremer, or as my children write, (signed) Mrs Henry Bremer Endor, Will Co, Ill (Translated from the German (by name) Jan 5, 1900). O10 |

| Memo | 5 Jan 1901 | Memo: Gentlemen: I take the liberty to write to you myself, as since the death of my dear husband I can not afford to pay for letter writing. I would not have sent the certificate of Death; neither my marriage certificate, - if the pension papers had not been sent to me, and when I said, that I would not answer them, then some said, that if I would not try to get it, others would draw it. As much as I can see, you have not received the cert. of Death, for you ask for the sam imater(?) No 2., - and the Doctor told me when I asked him about it, that he had taken it to Crown Point, Ind. himself and the marriage certificate, I took to him myself. If you have not received the papers, I can send them to you, once more, for old Dr. Sirdler, who treated my husband up to his last day, is still living, and my marriage is recorded in the Church Book, for(?) in 1866, when we were married, it was not necesarry for us to go first to the Court, the ceremony in the Church was sufficient. Our marriage was blessed with ten children, four of which died within ten days of Diphtheria, before my husbands death. When my husband died, my youngest girl was 12 years and my eldest boy 10 years old, but in months after my husbands death my youngest son followed him and now I have only five children. I was his first and only wife and he was my first and only husband. (signed) Friedericke Bremer Endor, Will Co, Ill. O10 |
| Memo | 5 Apr 1901 | Memo: Gentlemen: I transmit to you herewith enclosed, all I believe I am able to furnish except the certificate of death which the doctor has sent away, and I hope, that you will have it by this time. Dear gentlemen, I would like to know whether pension was ever paid, which was intended for my dear dec'd husband Heinrich Bremer, we never received anything. All the communications which you have received from Crown Point was sent without me knowing anything about it. The first papers which arrived after the death of my poor, dear husband, I signed because I was told, that if I do not apply for it, others would do it. It seemed too hard, that others should have that for which my husband had suffered. If I am not entitled to anything, I beg you, not to give anything to others, and that the whole matter be allowed to rest as he does. (signed:)Friederika Bremer, or Mrs. Henry Bremer. | Memo | 10 Apr 2026 | Biography: Marie Dorothea (Friedricka) Drangmeister Bremer (1847–1933) Marie Dorothea “Friedricka” Drangmeister was born on November 4, 1847, in Scharnhorst, near Celle in the Kingdom of Hanover (now part of Germany). She was baptized ten days later at the Lutheran church in Eschede, entering a world where faith, family, and rural life were deeply intertwined. Her early childhood was shaped by one of the defining movements of the 19th century—European emigration to America. In 1854, at the age of seven, Friedricka immigrated with her parents to the United States, arriving in New Orleans after a transatlantic voyage aboard the ship Bessel. The journey was marked by profound tragedy. During the crossing, three members of her family—young siblings—died at sea. Such losses, while heartbreaking, were not uncommon during long and hazardous ocean voyages of that era. Following their arrival, the family traveled north, eventually settling for a time in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, before moving westward to Illinois. This migration reflected the broader pattern of German immigrants seeking farmland and opportunity in the expanding Midwest. Friedricka came of age during a period of national upheaval. As a young woman, she lived through the American Civil War, which affected communities across the country, including those in Illinois where she later settled. It was during this time, after the war, that she became acquainted with Heinrich (Henry) Conrad Bremer, who had returned from military service in poor health. On October 4, 1866, Friedricka married Heinrich at St. John’s Lutheran Church of Eagle Lake near Beecher, Illinois. Their early married life was not easy. In her own words, written years later, she recalled that her husband was so ill shortly after their marriage that she feared he would not survive. He continued to suffer throughout his life from conditions believed to be related to his wartime service. Despite these challenges, Friedricka and Heinrich built a life together on their farm in Crete Township, Illinois. They were married for 31 years and raised a family of ten children. Life on the farm required constant labor and careful management. Friedricka’s responsibilities would have included cooking, preserving food, sewing, raising children, and assisting in the many daily tasks necessary to sustain the household. The family experienced both joy and deep sorrow. In December 1883, tragedy struck when four of their children died within a single week from diphtheria, a devastating disease that frequently claimed young lives before the advent of modern medicine. Such losses were a harsh reality of life in the 19th century. Through perseverance and hard work, Friedricka and her husband were able to maintain their farm and provide for their family. In later years, the family also became connected to land development in Iowa, as railroad expansion opened new opportunities for farming and settlement in the Midwest. After Heinrich’s death in 1897, Friedricka faced the challenges of widowhood. Her letters to the U.S. Pension Office reveal both her strength and her circumstances. Writing in German, the language she knew best, she described her husband’s suffering and her efforts to secure even a small pension to support herself and her family. These letters provide a rare and personal glimpse into her life—her devotion to her husband, her faith, and her determination to care for her children despite limited resources. In the years following his death, she continued to work and support her family. At one point, she cared for an elderly relative while managing her own modest means. Census records show that she later lived with her children, including a period in Iowa helping care for her grandchildren after the death of a daughter-in-law. Friedricka lived a long life that spanned extraordinary change. Born in pre-industrial Germany, she witnessed the transformation of America through immigration, westward expansion, the Civil War, and the early stages of modern industrialization. By the time of her later years, railroads, improved farming methods, and growing towns had reshaped the world she once entered as a young immigrant. She died on May 20, 1933, in Crete, Illinois, at the age of 85. She was buried at St. John’s Lutheran Church cemetery in Eagle Lake, the same church that had been central to her married life. Marie Dorothea (Friedricka) Drangmeister Bremer’s life was marked by resilience, faith, and perseverance. From the hardships of immigration and personal loss to the challenges of frontier farm life and widowhood, she endured and sustained her family through difficult times. Her story reflects the strength of immigrant women whose contributions, though often unrecorded, were essential to the success and continuity of future generations. |

| Obituary | 21 Apr 2014 | Obituary: The obituary for Marvin was recorded on 21 Apr 2014. Marvin Drenkow, age 80 of Melvin, passed away at his home in Melvin on Sunday, April 20, 2014. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, April 23rd at 11:00 a.m. at the American Lutheran Church in Melvin. Rev. Judith Johnson will officiate. Visitation will be at the American Lutheran Church from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, April 22nd, with the family present from 5:30 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. The Sanborn Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements for 80 year-old Marvin Drenkow of Melvin. Marvin “Red” Bernard Drenkow, the son of Fred and Lenora (Hartwig) Drenkow, was born on the family farm near Melvin, IA, on February 21, 1934. He was baptized and confirmed at the American Lutheran Church in Melvin. His childhood years were spent on the farm, and he attended country school at Goewey Township #5 until the 8th grade, and graduated from Melvin High School in 1952. He later received one year of additional schooling through the G.I. Bill at Sioux Empire College in Hawarden, IA. In September of 1955, Marvin enlisted to serve in the U.S. Army. Just one week prior to his deployment, he was united in marriage to Shirley Jean Ver Hoef at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, IA. He was honorably discharged in June of 1957. A short time later, the couple settled on the Drenkow family farm, where they were still living at the time of his death. He enjoyed life on the farm, raising livestock, raising grains and milking cows. He later ran a corn sheller. Besides the busy life of a farmer, Marvin enjoyed participating in sports, including fast-pitch softball, fishing, hunting, bowling and golfing with the Lucky Lutherans. He even shot a hole-in-one. He was a former member of the board of directors for the Sanborn Funeral Home and Farm Mutual Insurance, and belonged to the Melvin American Legion and the Farm Bureau. He was a life-long member of the American Lutheran Church, where he taught Sunday School, sat on the church council, and was involved in many other church activities. During his retirement years he drove vehicles for Drenkow Motors. He enjoyed entertaining friends, and often had gatherings in the shed on the farm. But most of all, Marvin took great pride in his children and grandchildren, and traveled great distances to support their activities. Marvin passed away at his home near Melvin on Sunday, April 20, 2014, at the age of 80. It was his wish to be cremated. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Don. He is survived by his wife, Shirley and their children: Teresa (Jerry) Pomrenke of Milford, IA, Pamela (Robert) Groote of Sibley, IA, Timothy (Kathy) Drenkow of Melvin, and Laura (Rick) Gross of Manilla, IA; nine grandchildren and one great-grandson; a brother, Ron (Gladys) Drenkow of Sheldon, IA; a sister-in-law, Darlene Drenkow of Norfolk, NE; other relatives and many friends.2 |

| Memo | (1400) | Memo: She continued bearing children until she was past forty and had her last child, the future James I of Scotland, in 1394. King Robert, an invalid since 1384 due to an accident with a horse, grew increasingly despondent and incompetent throughout his reign and was not capable to govern. During this time he is said to have said to her that he should be buried in a dung heap with the epitaph "Here lies the worst of kings and the most miserable of men". Because the king was not able to rule, Anabella was prompted to take manage state affairs as de facto ruler. The chronicles of Scotland generally praise queen Anabella and her conduct as queen. Protecting the interests of her oldest son, David, she arranged a great tournament in 1398 in Edinburgh, where her oldest son was knighted. In April of that year she also called a council where he was created Duke of Rothesay and Lieutenant of the Realm in the same year. Shortly after his mother's death he would be imprisoned by his uncle and died in mysterious circumstances. David was described as debauched, self-indulgent and erratic, and the Duke of Albany did not have to fight hard to control him.1 |
