Obituary | 21 April 2015 | Obituary: The obituary for Darlene was recorded in Norfolk, Madison, Nebraska, United StatesB, on 21 April 2015. NORFOLK — Services for Darlene Eleanor Drenkow, 86, of Norfolk will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Grace Lutheran Church in Norfolk. The Rev. Ray Wilke Sr. will officiate. Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Home for Funerals. ——— Darlene went to be with her Lord on Saturday, April 18, 2015. Darlene was born March 3, 1929, in Inwood, Iowa, to Bernard C. and Tilda Alice (Bergeson) Nelson. She was baptized on March 31, 1929, and confirmed May 9, 1943, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church. Darlene graduated from Inwood High School in 1947. She attended Iowa State Teachers College, graduating in 1952. Darlene’s teaching career included stints at a rural school in Lyons County in Iowa, Melvin Elementary School in Melvin, Iowa, Denison High in Denison, Iowa, and Humphrey High in Humphrey. She did substitute work in Columbus, Norfolk and Battle Creek. While teaching at Melvin Elementary in Melvin, Iowa, she met the love of her life, Don. They were married June 12, 1953, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Inwood, Iowa. Don teased Darlene that he had married an “older” woman since he was born two days after her, March 5, 1929. She and Don raised four children together while farming in Melvin, Iowa, Brookings, S.D., and then selling seed corn and insurance in Humphrey, Columbus and in 1967 moving to Norfolk. During their years in Norfolk, Darlene helped Don with their businesses, first selling seed corn to area farmers and then with their insurance business. She and Don built the Triple D Center located on east Omaha Avenue in the early 1980s to house the insurance business and bring other businesses to that part of Norfolk. Darlene also worked as church secretary at Our Savior Lutheran Church for a number of years. Darlene taught herself how to use a computer early on and continued to enjoy using the computer and her Kindle. When Don’s health began to fail, Darlene became his primary caregiver until he was unable to safely be at home. Don passed away on August 15, 1993. Darlene continued to work part-time, first at her own business, Secretary Pro Tem, one of the first temporary employment services in Norfolk, and then at Liberty Center and Improved Living Inc. Throughout her life, Darlene served both her church and her community. She served as president of the Westside PTA, secretary of the Our Savior Lutheran congregation, secretary of Lutheran Laymen’s League and taught Sunday school. The service that held special meaning for her was the time she spent with Lutheran Women’s Missionary League (LWML.) She held various offices in the local, zone and district LWML organizations. Everywhere Darlene went, she found fellow members who had a special bond. Darlene and Don gave their children their sense of humor. She taught the importance of loving unconditionally. She was a dedicated wife. She had the marriage that we all envied. She managed the house and made sure that her children had everything they needed. She had the ability to take limited funds and made sure that all of the bills were paid. Don would give her 30 minutes notice that they were going camping, and she could get all four kids and food ready for a weekend. Her husband would come home with all kinds of gadgets including a computer. She taught herself and everyone who asked how to use the computer. She’d embraced her independence since losing her husband in 1993. She loved to babysit and bake them chocolate chip cookies. She taught them how to make lefsa and eat lutefisk for the holidays. And don’t forget “Uff da.” You have to know “Uff da” to be a true Norwegian. She was very proud of her family. Darlene will be greatly missed by her children and grandchildren, Grant and Janine Drenkow (Brittany, Nathan and Allison), Brian and Danita Drenkow (Anissa and Kevin Marshall, Shelly and Curt Aust and Jason), Craig and Melodee Drenkow (Cassie and Fred) and Deann Alvarado (Isaac); and two great-grandchildren, Abbygail and Zachary Marshall; sister-in-law Shirley Drenkow of Melvin, Iowa; brother-in-law and wife, Ron and Gladys Drenkow of Sheldon, Iowa; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Donald M. Drenkow; sister and brother-in-law, Donna and Robert Mathieson of Dana Point, Calif.; and brother-in-law Marvin Drenkow of Melvin, Iowa. Darlene shared her faith at the end, leaving a folder with suggestions for final service, important dates and these notes included the following: “I would like a lot of music. I hope you will help people to think of this as a joyous occasion. I have gone to be with my Lord and to join my husband and my parents!” and “Don’t wear jeans to church!”3 |

Obituary | 18 January 1923 | Obituary: The obituary for Mary was recorded on 18 January 1923. [From the Flora Journal-Record, January 18, 1923) Mrs. Mary Emily Coil died at her home in Flora, Ill. Saturday morning, Jan., 13th, 1923, at 1:12 o'clock. Mrs. Coil had been in falling health for two years from which recovery was impossible. The place of her birth was Sistersvllle, W. Va., on May 22, 1863. Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. K. J. Blackburn, have preceded her to the Great Beyond. She became the wife of J. L. Coil of this city, on December 8, 1880. She was a devoted wife, a loving mother and a good neighbor, not only kind and thoughtful, but charitable in word and deed. Besides the husband she leaves three children—Mrs. Lola Chandler, of Pueblo, Colo., Ed C. Coil, of this city, and Mrs. Edith Irene Reffner of Lansing, Mich., ten grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Her death is also mourned by three sisters, and one brother; Mrs. Sallie Harrell, Mrs. Anna Anderson, Miss Ida Blackburn and Charles E. Blackburn, all of this city and an aged aunt on her mother's side, Mrs. Elizabeth Stanford, of Stanford township, two sons-in-law, one daughter-ln-law besides other relatives and a large circle of friends. Her neighbors loved her and will miss her. Blessed are those who keep the faith. Mrs. Mary Coil professed faith in Christ and united with the First Methodist Episcopal church In young womanhood and was an attendant of same until failing health debarred her from that privilege. She was only permitted to attend services a few times in the new church building. The last evangelistic service she attended was under the leadership of Rev. Martin and she was In entire accord with the views expressed that Christians should stand out from the world In their faith. She was a member of the ladles' aid society and the Frances Willard Bible Class. Since she has been a shut-in she and her husband have been members of the Home Department of the Sunday School. She was strong in her faith and died In the same. She knew death was near and set her earthly house in order for her going. She was a charter member of Margaret Morrlssey Lodge No. 435, Ladles' Auxiliary to B. of R. T., in which she was held in high esteem. Through years of affliction she has been a patient sufferer, trusting to her heavenly guide. Loving hands and tender care had done all that was possible, the angel came in and relieved her of her suffering. The children and their father were all permitted to be with her at the last. Funeral services were conducted Monday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock from the Flora Methodist Episcopal church, the minister. Rev. W. I. Terhune officiating. Interment was in Elmwood cemetery. The members of the Ladies Auxiliary gave their ritualistic burial service at the cemetery. Those from out-of-town attending the obsequies were:—Walter R. Coil of Edwardsville; Mrs. Thomas Rogers of lola.9 |
