ObituaryDecember 1948Obituary: The obituary for Mary was recorded in December 1948. Funeral services for Mary Ann Radunz, who died last Wednesday morning, were held Friday afternoon, December 3, 1948, from the American Lutheran church of Melvin. The eighth grade classmates of Mary Ann attended the funeral in a body, as did the classmates of her brother, Howard, a senior, both in the Ocheyedan schools.Mary Ann Radunz was born June 10, 1935, at Ocheyedan, IA, the daughter of Mr & Mrs John Radunz. Her entire life was spent on the home farm southwest of the city. She was baptized in infancy and had been a faithful member of the Sunday school of the American Lutheran church. At the time of her demise she was receiving catechetical instruction and would have been confirmed in the spring.Until two years ago she attended the Ocheyedan district school No. 8, at which time she commenced attending Ocheyedan public schools. She was in the eighth grade at the time she was taken ill.Mary Ann is survived by her parents, Mr & Mrs John Radunz; one brother, Howard; as well as a host of other relatives and friends.Those from a distance attending the funeral were Mr & Mrs Art Olson of Cottonwood, MN; Mr & Mrs Walter Krueger of Redwood Falls, MN; Emil Radunz of Wood Lake, MN; Mr & Mrs Emil Radunz, Jr of Granite Falls, MN; and Mr & Mrs John Hartwig and daughter of Hanley Falls, MN4

Funeral services for Howard John Radunz, 76, were held at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, November 13, at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Ocheyedan with Rev. Russell Anderson officiating. Interment was in Ocheyedan township Cemetery, Ocheyedan, with Jurrens Funeral Home, Sibley, in charge of arrangements. Howard died November 10, 2007.
Military honors were conducted by the Osceola County American Legion and VFW.
Howard Radunz was born June 11, 1931, on a farm southwest of Ocheyedan, the son of John and Anna (Hartwig) Radunz. Howard was baptized and confirmed in the American Lutheran Church in Melvin. He attended country school and later graduated from Ocheyedan Public School. He joined the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He received his honorable discharge in 1954. In 1955 he married JoAnn Uden in Sioux City.
Howard and JoAnn farmed for 10 years. Howard then worked for various construction companies as a heavy equipment operator. In 1985, Howard's health deteriorated and he retired. He researched his family history and was a past member of the Spencer and Sibley Historical Societies. He researched veteran names and was instrumental in constructing the Osceola Veterans Memorial Board. He also served as a clerk for the Ocheyedan and Harris townships. He worked and researched all the cemeteries in Osceola county and composed a book with his findings.
He was a lifelong member of Wood-Miller Legion Post, served as adjutant for many years and also was a member of the VFW in Sibley. He served as Osceola County VA director for nine years. While director, he was vice-president of the Veterans Memorial Committee. The memorial stands now on the courthouse grounds in Sibley. He also served as Osceola patient representative for the Sioux Falls VA Hospital and was a member of St. Peter's Church in Ocheyedan.
He is survived by his wife JoAnn; two sons: Douglas (Debbie) Radunz of Ocheyedan and Daniel Radunz and fiancée Darlene; one daughter, Eva Brown; four grandchildren: Carrie Goecke of Milford; Amanda Radunz of Sheldon; Wesley (Melissa) of Ocheyedan; and James Radunz of Ocheyedan; one great-grandchild, Dawson Goecke of Milford.
Preceding him in death were his parents and one sister, Mary Ann.5

Allen William Schmidt, 81, was born on May 20, 1924, in rural Ocheyedan, Iowa, the son of William and Elizabeth (Bremer) Schmidt. Allen grew up in the Ocheyedan area and graduated from Ocheyedan High School. After graduation, he attended Iowa State Teacher's College. He taught for a short time in the Ocheyedan area.
Allen married Violet Anderson on February 19, 1955, in Lakefield, Minn. He worked as a mechanic at Wackerbarth Bros. International Harvestor and took over the business in 1966, when it became Allen's Repair. He was a member of the Schmidt Quartet in the late 1940's singing sacred concerts and barbershop harmony and was a member of the Worthington City Band and the Sioux Falls Augustana College Community Band for many years. He also served as choir director for over 25 years.
Allen is survived by his wife, Violet, Ocheyedan; two daughters, Jill (Roger) Ver Mulm, Sioux Center, and Janene (Steve) Winters, Ocheyedan; one son, David (Dayna) Schmidt, Spencer; six grandchildren, Rachel, Stephanie, Kenneth, and Justin Winters and Ashlee and Ryan Ver Mulm; one brother, Eugene (Cheri) Schmidt, Ocheyedan; and two sisters, Rosetta (Ralph) Frese, Homestead, and Janet Murphy, Mesa, Ariz. He was preceded in death by two infant sons, Gregory and James, and his parents.8

EUGENE (GENE) CARL SCHMIDT, age 91, of rural Ocheyedan, IA, died Thursday, October 19, 2017, at the Community Memorial Health Center in Hartley, IA. He was born April 22, 1926, in Ocheyedan, IA, to William and Elizabeth (Bremer) Schmidt. Gene attended Zion Lutheran School. He served his country as a military police officer for the United States Army in the Philippines during WWII. After returning from the service he graduated from Ocheyedan High School in the class of 1947.

Gene married Esther Ulbricht on June 4, 1960, at St. Paul Lutheran Church near Lakefield, MN. After their marriage, the couple farmed, operated Schmidt Trucking and built a home together east of Ocheyedan, IA. Esther died after an extended hospitalization resulting from heart surgery. Gene was devoted to her care until death parted them on May 14, 1986.

Gene married Cheryl (Cheri) Myers on December 28, 1985, at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church in Worthington, MN. After retiring from farming, Gene and Cheri enjoyed many years of travel, gardening and enjoying life together. They loved and supported each other for 32 years during sickness and health.

Gene had unwavering faith in Jesus as his Savior. He was baptized and confirmed as a member of Zion Lutheran Church where he served as a Trustee and enjoyed singing in the choir. He is a current member of St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church in Worthington, and the Ocheyedan American Legion.

Gene loved to tease and enjoyed a good joke. He spoke fondly of his many years of going trapping, fishing, roller skating, and dancing. He enjoyed music, singing in harmony, buying cars, and tending his asparagus, tomatoes, apricots and of course his apple trees. He also had an amazing ability to fix almost anything.

Gene is survived by his wife, Cheryl Schmidt, Ocheyedan, IA; daughter, Veronica Jean (John) Schmidt Harvey, Houston, TX; son, William Carl (Kim) Schmidt, Omaha, NE; four grandchildren, Brittany (Tim) Gast, Bethany (fiancée, Joe) Schmidt, Leah Schmidt; and Levi Schmidt; three great grandchildren, Jacob, Isaac and Kaitlin; two step-grandchildren, Scott (Britni) Dawson and Heather (Lance) Harvey; five step-great grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Cody, McKenzie, Zakary and Delaney; sister, Janet (Ginger) Hundertmark, Mesa, AZ; sister-in-law, Violet Schmidt, Spencer, IA; and brother-in-law, Ralph Frese, Aledo, IL.

He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Esther; a brother, Allen Schmidt; and a sister, Rosetta Frese.

Visitation will be from 5-8 pm Sunday, October 29 at the Dingmann Funeral Home in Worthington; and also one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday, October 30. The funeral will be at 10:30 am Monday at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church, in Worthington, officiated by Pastor Mark Schreiber. Burial with full military honors provided by the Ocheyedan American Legion will be in the Zion Lutheran cemetery in rural Ocheyedan, IA.

He grew up in Martinsville, Virginia; High Point, North Carolina; Bristol, Tennessee and Greensboro, North Carolina. He graduated from Greensboro Senior High School.
Milton graduated from the University of Richmond where he met his future wife Margarget Lacy. Margaret and Milton were married on February 3, 1951. They had two children-Milton Leonard III of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida and Elizabeth Mastropiero of Silver Lakes Ranch, Texas.
Milton served in the U.S. Navy from June 1952 to September 1954 where he was Executive Officer of the USS PCER 856. He also served in the Tennessee State Guard during his last 2 years of high school. Milton enjoyed a 40 year sales and marketing career with IBM. He was one of the first marketing employees to be trained in programming the early commercially available computers. In early 1955 he was responsible for installing one of the first computers delivered by IBM to the Naval Aviation Supply Office in Philadelphia. He held a number of different jobs in IBM including branch manager of Trenton New Jersey, Western Regional Manager of the Manufacturing Systems Products Marketing Unit (industrial computers and robots) and an assignment in Munich Germany. The Munichg assignment gave Milton and Margaret an opportunity to enjoy exploring Europe.
Milton had many interests including golfing, sailing, and sailboat racing. He was an active member and Elder of the First Presbyterian Church of New Bern, North Carolina. He was also a member of Fellowship United Methodist Church of Trophy Club, Texas.
Milton was predeceased by his parents and sister Mary Elizabeth Hoover of Williamsburg, Virginia and Margaret, his wife of 68 years. He is survived by his son Milton Leonard III and his wife Karen of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, his daughter Elizabeth Mastropiero and husband Robert of Silver Lakes Ranch, Texas, his grandson Brian Mastropiero and his wife Lisa of Keller, Texas, granddaughter Kristen Steinlage and her husband Shawn of Dallas, Texas, grandson Daniel Mastropiero and wife Kate of Sunset, Texas, brother Frank Leonard of Raleigh, North Carolina, brother Tom Leonard of Hampton Roads, Virginia and 4 great- grandchildren.4
