Note (fam) | The Drangmeisters came west to Crete, IL by wagon and horses. They settled on a farm just north of the Bremers. Over the years their farm and the Bremer farm has been sold and built up with houses. In 1990, Mrs Minnie (Bremer) Wolf, Christoph's daughter, lived on the original farm owned by Heinrich, which consisted of 8 3/4 acres with the farm buildings. After her death, the farm went to her nephew, Bob Meyer, who in 1997 still owned it. His daughter lived in it. On Dec 31 1877 the State of Iowa deeded land to the Sioux City and St. Paul Railroad. On Nov 1 1882 the north one half of section 13, Horton township was sold to an individual for $1300. Six days later the land was sold for $1840 and one day later for $2160. Finally on Dec 29 1890 the land was sold to Heinrich Bremer of Crete, Illinois for $3820. The legal papers were recorded in the Osceola County Courthouse on Mar 19 1891. Whether Henry Bremer (son of Heinrich) brought the legal papers for the land purchase to the Osceola Courthouse is not known, but it is known that he was here in 1892. Henry started farming and was joined in the spring of 1894 by his brother Herman. The two men worked together that year. In 1897 the land was purchased from Heinrich Bremer by the two brothers, each purchasing a quarter section for $2000. Henry bought the west quarter and Herman the east one. The land still belongs to the Bremer family and is farmed by descendants. Martha Bremer (Allen's wife) and Tom Bremer living on the respective farms.6
Memo | 19 December 1899 | Memo: Endor, Will Co, Ill. December 19, 1899 (Note: Apparently sent to the US Pension Office) Gentlemen: I take the liberty to address a few lines to you to ask you, whether it is so, as the Attorney's always told my dec'd husband, that every soldier is entitled to a pension, - my dear husband never said anything about pension. In 1890 when he was very sick, a letter arrived from Chicago in which he was asked whether he was drawing pension. He was so ill, that I did not care to show him the letter. A second and third letter arrived, and as he was somewhat better, I read all the letters to him. His friends advised him to answer the letters, saying that he had earned a pension, as well as many others, having served three years in the war. Gentlemen, I beg you, please return to me my marriage certificate, which I never would have sent ??? the certificate of Death, had I not been told that if I would not take it (money) somebody else would. Gentlemen, I write German because I can express myself better than in English, and I cannot let the attorney's write for me any more. My dear husband is at rest - relieved from all sickness and Pain. He was a good husband and a good father to my children. We have lived happily together for 31 years, and God blessed our union with 10 children, five of which are still living. Gentlemen, I did not know my husband before the war. I lived with my parents in Pittsburg, PA and in 1862 my parents moved to this place, and we were neighbors of his parents. In 1865, he returned from the war, afflicted with chills and fever. We became acquainted and on the 4 of October 1866 we were married. The first 2 weeks following our marriage, he was so sick that I expected his death every minute. He vomited blood and passed blood in the stool. However, God made him feel better again, but he always suffered internal pains until he became afflicted with hernia and always had to wear a bandage. I do not know what year it was. He always suffered very much with Rhumatism, and Bilious Convulsions and his gall turned into small stones in Consequence of which, he suffered terrible pains. The doctors said that his affliction was the result of the hardship of his 3 years service in the war. He always recovered so far that we could work together our small farm, and God blessed our work so that he could put his head to rest, as a true father of his family, but alas, too soon. He lived 11 months after the stroke of cerebral apoplexy. Please do not let any other person take the pension of my husband Henry Bremer. I will be satisfied with even a little. (Signed) Fredericke Bremer Endor, Will Co, Ill. Please do not send your answer to Crown Point, Ind. - it takes too long before I get it. (Translated from the German - Jan 11, 1900) (Stamped by) US Pension Office - Jan 13, 190011 |

Memo | 5 January 1900 | Memo: Gentlemen: Pardon me for writing in German, I am better able to express myself in this language. I would have answered sooner but, I have been so deistressed, and put off writing from day to day. I will thankfully receive any small allowance you may grant me, and if not, then please inform me so. My dear husband died on the 1st of September 1897, and since then, I had to take care of a sick uncle, who is near 80 years old. With regards, Friedricke Bremer, or as my children write, (signed) Mrs Henry Bremer Endor, Will Co, Ill (Translated from the German (by name) Jan 5, 1900)11 |

Memo | 5 January 1901 | Memo: Gentlemen: I take the liberty to write to you myself, as since the death of my dear husband I can not afford to pay for letter writing. I would not have sent the certificate of Death; neither my marriage certificate, - if the pension papers had not been sent to me, and when I said, that I would not answer them, then some said, that if I would not try to get it, others would draw it. As much as I can see, you have not received the cert. of Death, for you ask for the sam imater(?) No 2., - and the Doctor told me when I asked him about it, that he had taken it to Crown Point, Ind. himself and the marriage certificate, I took to him myself. If you have not received the papers, I can send them to you, once more, for old Dr. Sirdler, who treated my husband up to his last day, is still living, and my marriage is recorded in the Church Book, for(?) in 1866, when we were married, it was not necesarry for us to go first to the Court, the ceremony in the Church was sufficient. Our marriage was blessed with ten children, four of which died within ten days of Diphtheria, before my husbands death. When my husband died, my youngest girl was 12 years and my eldest boy 10 years old, but in months after my husbands death my youngest son followed him and now I have only five children. I was his first and only wife and he was my first and only husband. (signed) Friedericke Bremer Endor, Will Co, Ill.11 |
Memo | 5 April 1901 | Memo: Gentlemen: I transmit to you herewith enclosed, all I believe I am able to furnish except the certificate of death which the doctor has sent away, and I hope, that you will have it by this time. Dear gentlemen, I would like to know whether pension was ever paid, which was intended for my dear dec'd husband Heinrich Bremer, we never received anything. All the communications which you have received from Crown Point was sent without me knowing anything about it. The first papers which arrived after the death of my poor, dear husband, I signed because I was told, that if I do not apply for it, others would do it. It seemed too hard, that others should have that for which my husband had suffered. If I am not entitled to anything, I beg you, not to give anything to others, and that the whole matter be allowed to rest as he does. (signed:)Friederika Bremer, or Mrs. Henry Bremer. The middle child died near shore and was buried in Germany. In their 5 week sail boat trip the nursing baby became very ill and passed away. The mother dressed the baby for burial and covered the body with her prettiest white apron. They were told to put the baby on deck and they could see the baby one more time in the morning. Next morning the baby was gone. Buried at sea. Then the mother became very swollen from all the milk and desperately ill. The only way to solve the problem was for the husband to suck the milk. She was spared and soon returned to health. One daughter came with them to America. Five daughters and two more sons were born in America.11,10

Memo (fam) | Memo: The following is from the Ocheyedan, IA Centennial Book of 1991: They left Hannover, Germany, approximately 1850, with three children. Five daughters and two more sons were born in America.9,8

Note (fam) | March 1895 | Note: Herman John Bremer and Louise Piepho in March 1895 in Horton Township, Osceola, Iowa, United StatesB. Herman and Louise returned to Iowa after they married, and built a comfortable home on the virgin prairie land. In 1899 Herman Bremer purchased 128 acres in the north west corner of section 18, Fairview township for $3575. This land was used for pasture in the early years. Prior to the road grading on the north side of section 18, the steep hill was the site of hill climbing competition for cars. According to reports, few cars ever made the forward climb, but the competition was always challenging. Tobogganing, skiing, and sledding were the winter activities on the hill. This land is now (1997) farmed by Wayne Bremer. As Herman's family increased, the house became cramped, so remodeling was done and finally in the early 1900's several rooms were added. During late 1929 Herman and Louise built a new smaller home. At that time Harry and Emma Bremer moved into the big house. In the mid 1930's the smaller house was moved one half mile east to Fairview section 18. Herman, Louise and Albert lived there until 1939 when Herman and Louise moved into Ocheyedan. In 1917 Herman bought another 160 acres, this quarter was in section 24 of Horton township, the northeast corner. This farm was bought for $24,000. The farm became Carl Bremer's, then Dennis Bremer's and at present (1997) is farmed by Keith Bremer. Herman and Louise Bremer were active members of Zion Lutheran Church throughout their life in Iowa. Herman held several offices in the church, seventeen years as an Elder. He also held township offices.1 |

Memo (fam) | Memo: [From the Ocheyedan, IA Centennial] Frederick Glade was born in Kolenfeld, Hanover, Germany in 1836. Dorothea Seehausen Glade was born in Mesmerode, Germany. Both came to America in 1853. Frederick traveled to Indiana to a community of German immigrants. Later, his parents also arrived in America. The Civil War was being fought, and Frederick enlisted. He served during the entire war in the cavalry. After the war he worked in a brick factory in Chicago. While there he met Dorothea. They were married in 1865, and farmed in Indiana. In 1883, Mr. & Mrs. Glade and their ten children (five boys and five girls) moved to Ocheyedan, Iowa. They arrived in Sibley, the nearest railroad town, and had to haul everything 14 miles cross-country to get to their land. They were able to rent a house on the farm across the road. The house consisted of three small bedrooms, a kitchen, and a pantry. Three carpenters stayed with them, so there were seventeen people for three beds and three straw ticks. The boys had to sleep outside in a wagon box. It was March, so it was quite cold. When the house was completed, it was one of the best in the community. Walls were plastered and back plastered. The outside was covered with lap siding, and the windows had green blinds. The house is still standing to this day. The girls had to twist hay for fuel and gather buffalo chips. The boys herded the cows on the prairie. The first summer the girls planted beans in the prairie sod by using an axe to chop holes in the sod and dropping in a few beans. They had a wonderful bean crop. More sod was broken every year. The first wheat for flour was taken to the mill at Spirit Lake, 30 miles away. After several years the railroad came to Ocheyedan. Three more sons were born into the Glade family in the next five years, bringing the total to thirteen children. Frederick and Dorothea helped establish the present Zion Lutheran congregation in Horton Township in 1887. The Glades observed their 60th wedding anniversary with an impressive service at the church; Frederick and Dorothea sat at the altar with seven sons, four daughters, and thirteen in-laws seated around them. Few unions last to see such an occasion. All thirteen children grew to adulthood and married. They were Fred, Wilhelmina Leckband, Dorothea Bremer, Louisa Hattendorf, Sophia Dorr, Mary Bremer, Henry, August, William, Chris, Herman, Albert and Arthur. The Glade homestead consisted of 320 acres. This was later divided into three farms. Herman had the south, Albert had the center, and Arthur had the north. Dorothea Glade died in 1925 at age 78, and Frederick Glade died in 1932 at age 95.6 |
