Memo | 1885 | Memo: In 1885, Christoph and Dorothea came to Ocheyedan with a box car full of farming equipment, a team of horses and household goods. Friends they knew in Illinois, were farming nearby, met them at Ocheyedan when they got off the train. There was only a path with prairie grass higher than their heads. They remembered what Dorothea's father had said to them. "The wild beast will eat you in Iowa". They almost believed it was true.
They stayed with friends until they cleaned out an old granary and lived in it until they built a small house. It consisted of a kitchen and dining room combined, a small bedroom and pantry. The upstairs was a large bedroom and a small one and a large closet. Heated by a kitchen range and a small heater upstairs. Sometimes four slept in one bed to keep warm. Seven of their nine children were born in this small house. This small house with additions added stood there over a century.13 |

Note | | He was the founder of the farm (estate) since he was the only son of the shoemaker Cord (Conrad) Heinrich. According to the customs he should have become a shoemaker and taken over his father's workshop. But since he showed no interest at all in that trade and his parents couldn't convince him otherwise, he became a farmhand for Farmer Bremer in Lohnde for 4 years. After 4 years he quit his job and went to work for Farmer Grimschlin in Almhorst. He worked for him until 1871. At this farm he met his later wife Sophie Dorothe Droste from Seelze. She had a job there as a maidservant. Heinrich Christian Conrad Wilhelm became a soldier in 1871. After his tour of duty he took a job as a farmhand at Farmer Weident's place in Landringhausen. He returned to Kolenfeld in 1875.1 |
Note | 1877 | In 1877, after his father died, He built two extra rooms onto the original house.1 |
Note | | Heinrich Piepho had 16 morgen of farmland which he inherited from his father. His sisters also worked on the farm. He bought 4 more morgen of farm land from Borges in 1878. In 1886 he bought 6 1/2 morgen of farmland from Busse which he divided with his brother-in-law Christof Scheibe. (Note: morgen is a unit of area equal to about .6309 acres. It is derived from the German word Morgen ("morning"). It represented the amount of land that could be plowed in a morning.)1 |
Note | 1880 | In 1880, Heinrich Piepho built a stable onto the living quarters, and the laundryroom was moved toward the garden. He also had an oven built behind the livings quarters (used for baking bread). In 1885 he cultivated 4 morgen of woodland. In 1892, he built a barn across the street where he had some property (garden).1 |
Note | 1900 | In 1900, he built the pigsties. With doing so, there was an argument with his neighbor Warnecke. It took years before that fight was straightened out. Also in 1900, he bought a chaffcutter that you had to work by hand. Together with his neighbor Rüter he bought a winchthresher. With this machine they were able to thresh two to three times more grain (rye) a day. The winchthresher was pulled by 4-6 cows. In 1906, the cows were replaced with an electric motor.1 |
Note | 1902 | In 1902 he bought 9 1/2 morgen of farmland from Grages/Bock. In 1903 he bought 4 morgen of farmland from Ostermeyer. Heinrich increased his farm from 16 to 36 morgen. Eight morgen were pastureland. He also expanded the living quarters and built stables and a barn. In 1911 he turned over the responsibilities of the farm to his son Heinrich Adolf Friedrich Piepho.1 |
