Memo10 Apr 2026Biography: Chris Piepho (1826–1891)

Chris Piepho was born on June 19, 1826, in Kolenfeld, near Wunstorf in the Kingdom of Hannover, a rural farming region in what is now Lower Saxony, Germany. He grew up in a structured agricultural society where land, family, and Lutheran faith shaped daily life. His parents, Johann Harm Piepho and Engel Dorothea Bergmann, were part of a long-established community in which generations often remained rooted in the same place.

As a young man, Chris came of age during a time of uncertainty in Germany. The years following the revolutions of 1848 brought economic difficulty and limited opportunity, especially for those without the prospect of inheriting sufficient land. Like many others of his generation, he chose to leave. In 1849, at the age of 23, he emigrated from Bremen aboard the ship Magdalene, arriving in New York City on November 29 of that year.

Rather than remaining in the East, Chris moved inland, following the path of many German immigrants seeking land and independence. By the early 1850s he had settled in Lake County, Indiana, just across the Illinois border. There he began building a new life from the ground up. In 1852 he purchased 80 acres of land through a government grant, followed by an additional 72.91 acres in 1853. These acquisitions represented not just ownership, but the hard work of transforming undeveloped land into a productive farm—clearing fields, building structures, and establishing a livelihood through persistence and labor.

On December 28, 1855, Chris married Katharina Sophie Dorothee Seegers at St. John’s Lutheran Church of Eagle Lake in Beecher, Illinois. Katharina was the sister of Sophia Seegers, who had married Friedrich Bremer, thereby linking the Piepho family directly with the Bremer line. These connections among families from the same German region were common, as immigrants often settled near one another and maintained familiar ties in a new land.

Chris and Katharina established their home in Hanover Township, Lake County, Indiana, where they raised a large family. As was typical of the time, not all of their children survived infancy and early childhood, and the family endured those losses with the resilience shared by many 19th-century families.

Chris’s primary occupation was farming, but later records also list him as a shoemaker. This combination reflects the practical realities of frontier life, where multiple skills were often necessary to sustain a household. Farming provided the foundation, while a trade could supplement income and provide stability during difficult seasons.

By 1860, Chris had become a naturalized citizen of the United States, marking his full transition from a subject of the Kingdom of Hannover to an American landowner and member of a growing Midwestern community. Census records from 1860, 1870, and 1880 show him firmly established in Hanover Township, with his family and farm forming the center of his life.

Chris Piepho lived out his remaining years in the same community he helped build. He died on December 6, 1891, in Hanover Township and was buried at Zion UCC Cemetery, where many other German immigrant families of the area were laid to rest.

His life reflects a familiar pattern within your family history—leaving Germany in search of opportunity, enduring the uncertainties of immigration, establishing a farm on newly acquired land, and building a family that would carry forward into future generations. Through his daughter Louise Piepho, and through his marriage into the Seegers family, Chris became part of the broader network of families whose paths intertwined and eventually led to the later generations in your family.

Note17 Nov 1958Note: 17 Nov 1958 Kolenfeld, Wunstorf, Hannover, Lower Saxony, Germany. During the night of Nov 17 & 18, 1958 at 11:30pm there was a fire at the homestead. No one was hurt and no animal perished. The feed which was stored in the attic burnt, the stables were all destroyed, but the dwellings were saved. Heinrich, Sophie, Willi, Margarete, and Rosemarie were taken in by neighbors. The animals were put up by other farmers. One day after the fire, the police checked the cause of the fire. They found out that the farmhand who was working at Willi Piepho's farm caused the fire with a cigarette. (He went late at night to get hay for the horses and the cigarette fell out of his mouth. As he stated later, he stepped on the cigarette but paid no more attention after that.) That's how the house of the Piepho's burnt down again after 150 years. In 1958, Willi Piepho exchanged 6 morgen of farmland with Cord Köster, so he could build his new farm near the village. At the end of 1959, the new farm was completed. The old living quarters, he remodeled and rented out. The barn was sold to Max Machnick which he rebuilt to a living quarter. The modern agriculture machines, Willi bought with a few farmers together because these are too expensive and uneconomical. O1

Piepho, Frederick - Faribault Republican 26/Apr/1911
Frederick Piepho, well known in Faribault and Rice County, passed away at his home, 311 1/2 Central Avenue, Monday Evening, April 24 at 4pm, at the age of 67 years. The sudden demise of Mr. Piepho was a great surprise to his many friends in the city, who knew that he had been ill only a few days. Teh cause of death was paralysis and other complications, only during the last few days was he considered to be at all seriously ill. Fredrick Piepho was born in Germany and came to this country with his parents when very young. His father and mother settled in Illinois and about 1855 they came to the then almost wilderness state of Minnesota, settling on a claim in East Prairie, and were among the very first pioneer settlers in this section. In 1866 Frederick Piepho was united in marriage to Miss Sophia Thurnau. Some years later he removed from the farm to Faribault where he engaged in the retail business, conducting a grocery store on the present site of the Citizens National Bank. For years he was a member of the Old Niagara Hose Company, one of the first fire organizations of the city. He is survived by his wife and nine children. They are: Mrs. F L Glotzback, Mrs. Gust W Frederick, Melvina, Lydia all of Faribault; Herman, South Dakota, and Robert, William and Edward of Montana, Frederick, Jr. of North Dakota. Three brothers also survive, Charles and Ferdinand of East Prairie and Henry of Mankato. Besides the members of the family there are a large number of more distant relatives who live in this county. Frederick Piepho was an unostentatious man, big hearted, and as a result had made many friends during his career in this county. He retired from business here about twelve years ago. All of the children will be in attendance at the funeral which will be held Friday afternoon at 2pm, from the German Lutheran Church, Rev Schultz officiating. interment will be in Maple Lawn Cemetery.5

Memo1930Memo: Biography from book of unknown name: George H. PIEPHO. Among the men who have contributed by their abilities and industry to the prestige of the thriving manufacturing City of Muncie, none is held in greater respect than George H. Piepho, junior member of the firm of Moffitt & Piepho, proprietor of a beautiful funeral home. When it is remembered that he was not bred in academic halls, but commenced his career amid humble surroundings and shared the common lot of labor in toilsome occupations and continued to pursue an ordinary business life, his present devotion to high purposes will be regarded as not less rare than honorable. Throughout his career he has been highly reputed for honesty, integrity and ability, virtues which, however homely, bring a high reward. Mr. Piepho was born at Kankakee, Illinois, October 16, 1873, and is a son of August and Minnie (Breuscher) Piepho, natives of Germany, who came to the United States as children with their parents from Hanover, where they had moved from France, Piepho being an old French name. August Piepho was given excellent educational advantages in a private school at Chicago, and when news of the great gold strikes in California reached that embryo city he immediately gathered together what money he could and became one of the original band of courageous "forty-niners" who made their way across the Indian-infested plains, confident of securing their fortunes. Many became almost immediately discouraged after they found that the precious metal was not to be picked up by the handfuls, but Mr. Piepho was made of sterner stuff and for five years he continued to be a prospector and miner. He was not successful in the accumulation of any great property, but secured sufficient gold to allow him to return to Chicago, to marry and to go to Kankakee County, Illinois, where he bought a farm in the vicinity of the City of Kankakee, costing several thousand dollars, which represented his earnings in the goldfields. It may be mentioned as an index to his generous character that he paid the transportation back to Chicago for several of his original companions who had not been as fortunate as he. During the remainder of his life Mr. Piepho was engaged in the vocations of farming and stock raising, and about 1876 moved to near Crown Point, Indiana, where he purchased another farm, this being his home during the last thirty years of his life. At his death, January 11, 1900, he was buried at Crown Point, a community which at that time lost one of its most highly respected citizens.

Mrs. Piepho, who was reared and educated at Chicago, and who was an energetic worker in the Methodist Episcopal Church throughout her life, died in 1908, and was laid to rest at the side of her husband in the cemetery at Crown Point. There were eight children in the family: Mary, who is the wife of David Dippan, of Dwight, Illinois; John, of Hebron, Indiana; Emma, who died in 1926, as the wife of Herman Meyer, of Scotia, Nebraska; Matilda, of Gary, Indiana, the widow of Fred Mandernach; Minnie, the wife of Herman Nickel, of Pasadena, California; Louise, the wife of Charles Souerman, of Kankakee, Illinois; George H., of this review; and Annie, the wife of Rudolph Jors, of Lakeland, Florida.

The public schools of Crown Point furnished George H. Piepho with his educational training, and on leaving high school he became associated with his father in the homely and difficult tasks of the farm. After a few years he decided upon a business career and accordingly went to Brunswick, Indiana, where he established a modest mercantile enterprise, subsequently engaging in the undertaking business there. In 1914 he sold his holdings at Brunswick and moved to Muncie, where he established himself in the undertaking and funeral directing business, which has grown to be one of the finest in this part of the state. His beautiful and dignified chapel and funeral home are situated at 307 East Charles Street, where he has every known convenience for the proper care of the dead. The business is motorized throughout, and while it is conducted as Moffitt & Piepho, Mr. Piepho is now sole owner. Mr. Piepho is a thirty-second degree Mason, a Knight Templar, and a member of Muncie Lodge No. 433, A. F. and A. M.; Muncie Chapter and Council, Indianapolis Commandery and Consistory, and the Mystic Shrine at Indianapolis. He belongs also to Welcome Lodge of the Knights of Pythias and the Loyal Order of Moose and also to the Optimist Club. Politically a Republican, he has always been interested in public affairs and civic movements, and when he was only nineteen years of age was elected road supervisor at Brunswick, an office in which he served with great capability for two or three terms. His religious connection is with the High Street Methodist Episcopal Church, of which he is a member of the official board. On June 28, 1901, at Brunswick, Indiana, Mr. Piepho was united in marriage with Miss Julia Groman, a daughter of Dr. Charles and Sophia (Ortmeyer) Groman, the former of whom was for many years a prominent practicing physician and surgeon of Brunswick. Both have been deceased for many years and are buried in the cemetery at Brunswick.

Mrs. Piepho, a woman of advanced and superior accomplishments, received a good education in the schools of Indiana, including also a college at Chicago, and for some years prior to her marriage was one of Indiana's able and popular educators. She was active in the work of the High Street Methodist Episcopal Church, was an official of the Order of the Eastern Star for a number of years, and likewise was active in the Federation of Women's Clubs. She died December 29, 1926, and was buried at Elm Ridge Memorial Park Mausoleum, Muncie.

To Mr. and Mrs. Piepho there were born the following children: Clarence G., Gladys D. and Herbert G. Clarence G. Piepho was graduated from the high school at Muncie, following which he pursued a course at the Ball State Teachers College. He then entered the Indiana State School of Embalming, from which he was graduated in 1928, and has since been associated with his father in the operation of the Moffitt & Piepho Funeral Home. In 1929 he was elected coroner of Delaware County, a position, which he still fills. On October 12, 1924, at Muncie, Indiana, he was united in marriage with Miss Lois Wilson, and they have had two children: Lois Ann and one child who died in infancy. Gladys D. Piepho is a graduate of the Muncie High School and of the Ball State Teachers College, and is now engaged in teaching in the public schools of Muncie. Herbert G. Piepho is a graduate of the Muncie High School, and is now a student at the University of Indiana at Bloomington.6

Note2001Note: 2001. The following is from "History of Delaware County", Volume II by Frank D. Haimbaugh, originally published in 1924, and appearing on http://www.countyhistory.com/del_ham/081.htm.
George H. Piepho, of the firm of Moffitt & Piepho, funeral directors at Muncie, was born in Kankakee, Illinois, and is a son of August and Minnie (Bruescher) Piepho, substantial farming people of that community. August Piepho was a "49er," one of that adventurous band of Argonauts who went to California following the discovery of gold there, he making the toilsome journey by way of the Isthmus. Upon his return he for some time made his home in Chicago and then became a farmer in the Kankakee region. One of his sons, John Piepho, is now the manager of a 500-acre scientific and experimental farm in the fertile Kankakee valley in the vicinity of Hebron. Reared on the home farm in Kankakee, George H. Piepho received his schooling in the schools of that city and early became interested in the mercantile business. After his marriage he established himself in business, proprietor of a general store at Brunswick near beautiful Cedar Lake, in Lake County, Indiana, and was thus engaged in business there until he became interested in the undertaking business. He took a course in the College of Embalming at Chicago in 1914 entered into his present partnership in the old established undertaking concern with which he since has been connected at Muncie, doing business under the firm name of Moffitt & Piepho, with a well equipped establishment at the corner of Charles and Jefferson streets. Mr. Piepho is a Freemason, is also affiliated with the Knights of Pythias and the Loyal Order of Moose, and he and his wife are members of the High Street Methodist Episcopal Church. In 1901, at Brunswick, Indiana, George H. Piepho was united in marriage to Julia G. Groman, daughter of Dr. Charles Groman, of that place, and to this union three children have been born, Clarence, Gladys and Herbert, the latter of whom is still in public school. Clarence Piepho completed his schooling in Boston and is now associated with his father in the undertaking business. Gladys Piepho is a student at the Eastern Division of the Indiana State Normal School at Muncie. Mrs. Piepho is one of the active members of the Muncie Woman's Club, one of the oldest continuing woman's clubs in Indiana, and served for two years as Secretary of the Federated Clubs of Muncie and Delaware County. Before her marriage she was for some years engaged in teaching in the public schools of Lake County. One of her sisters, Minnie Gorman, was for some time engaged in the missionary field and is now a settlement worker in Chicago. Her father, Dr. Charles Groman, a graduate of Rush Medical College, Chicago, became an influential factor in the development of the Cedar Lake region and erected the first schoolhouse put up at Brunswick, in Lake County. One of his sons, Dr. Augustus Groman, is now a practicing physician in Iowa, and tow of his grandsons, Dr. Herman G. Groman, of Hammond, Indiana, and Dr. Alfred Noehren, surgeon at Buffalo, New York, also are physicians.8
