Immigration (fam)30 May 1855Immigration: Fridrich (Fred) Heinrich Ernst Bremer immigrated with Friedrich Bremer and Sophia Seegers 30 May 1855 to Manhattan, New York City, New York, United States on the ship Hermann from Bremen Germany. Friedrich emigrated from Bremen, Germany, with wife (Sophia Seegers, pregnant with Sophie) and his two sons (Fridrich and Heinrich) to New York. During their seven week trip on the sail boat, another ship rammed their boat. The bow of the other ship pierced the hull right beside the pillow where Friedrich was laying. Census5 Jul 1860Fridrich (Fred) Heinrich Ernst Bremer appeared in the census on 5 Jul 1860 in Arago, Richardson, Nebraska, United States, with listed with his brother as laborers from Prussia living with the family of August Weinert.  Ages, per the census: Fred 23; Henry 20. O3
Memo1861Memo: Fred Bremer is a mystery in some ways.  When we started our quest all we knew was that family lore told us that he came to America with his father and brother, fought in the Civil War, and was never heard from again -- although it was believed that he did

With that we looked for a Fred Bremer in the same outfit, and did find a Fred Bremer that served in Company C of the 5th Missouri Calvary and Company B of the 4th Missouri Calvary from 25 Sep 1861 to 18 Oct 1864. The age at enlistment was recorded as 32 (should have been 23), and a note in the records indicated that he had deserted in 1861.
Note: We visited the local courthouse and reviewed the records that were available. A fire in the courthouse destroyed most of the records during the time frame of interest. Not enough information to prove anything.4
MilitaryFrom 1862 to 1865Military: Fridrich (Fred) Heinrich Ernst Bremer served in Union Army during the American Civil War and is believed to have died during the war on From 1862 to 1865.4

Memo10 Apr 2026Biography: Friedrich Bremer (1813–1891)

Friedrich Bremer was born on September 23, 1813, in Wichtringhausen, near Barsinghausen in the Kingdom of Hanover (now part of Germany). He was baptized three days later at St. Thomas Lutheran Church in nearby Hohenbostel. His early life unfolded during a time of significant upheaval in Europe, following the Napoleonic Wars, which had reshaped political boundaries and contributed to economic uncertainty throughout the German states.

Little is known about Friedrich’s early schooling, but records suggest that he left his home village at a relatively young age, possibly to work as a farm laborer. By the late 1830s, he was employed as a Schaeferknecht (shepherd) on a noble estate in Grossgoltern. This occupation reflects the agricultural nature of the region and the limited economic opportunities available to many rural families in 19th-century Germany.

On August 30, 1841, Friedrich married Engel (Sophie) Dorothee Heerhorst at the Lutheran church in Grossgoltern. Together they began raising a family. After her death, he later married Sophia Seegers, with whom he had additional children. Like many families of the time, they experienced both growth and loss, raising a large family in an era when infant and childhood mortality were common.

By the mid-19th century, economic pressures, population growth, and limited land availability in Europe prompted many families to emigrate. In 1855, Friedrich made the life-changing decision to bring his family to America. He, along with his wife Sophia and children—including his sons Friedrich (Fred) and Heinrich (Henry)—departed from Bremen, Germany, and arrived in New York City on May 30, 1855, after a seven-week journey aboard the sailing ship Hermann.

The voyage itself was perilous. During the crossing, another ship collided with theirs, piercing the hull near where Friedrich was lying. In an emergency effort to keep the ship afloat, the crew and passengers used pillows to plug the hole until repairs could be made. Incidents such as this were not uncommon and underscore the risks immigrants accepted in pursuit of a better future.

Friedrich’s arrival in America came during a time of rapid expansion and opportunity. The United States was drawing immigrants with the promise of land and independence, particularly in the Midwest. By 1857, the family had settled in Crete Township, Will County, Illinois, part of a growing German-American farming community.

Life in Illinois required determination and adaptability. The land had to be cleared and cultivated, homes built, and communities established. In 1864, during the midst of the American Civil War, Friedrich purchased 40 acres of land from a railroad land grant for $14. Such purchases were part of a broader effort to develop farmland along expanding rail lines, which were transforming transportation and commerce across the country.

Friedrich spent the remainder of his life farming in Crete Township, raising his children and establishing roots that would extend into future generations. His family became part of a close-knit rural community centered on agriculture and church life, maintaining many of the cultural traditions brought from Germany.

In July 1879, Friedrich prepared his will, ensuring that his property and responsibilities would be properly managed and passed on to his family. This act reflected both his practical nature and his concern for the well-being of his wife and children.

Friedrich died on March 3, 1891, in Crete Township, Illinois, at the age of 77. He was buried at Zion United Church of Christ Cemetery in Hanover Township, Indiana, near where many members of his extended family were laid to rest.

Friedrich Bremer’s life represents the experience of many 19th-century immigrants who left Europe behind to build new lives in America. From his beginnings in rural Hanover, through the dangers of transatlantic travel, to establishing a farm in Illinois, his story is one of courage, perseverance, and faith. The land he cultivated and the family he raised became the foundation for generations that followed, including the move westward into Iowa and the continuation of the Bremer farming legacy.

Memo10 Apr 2026Biography: Heinrich (Christian) Bremer (1783–1856)

Heinrich (Christian) Bremer was born on February 17, 1783, in Wichtringhausen, near Barsinghausen in the Electorate of Hanover (now part of Germany). He was baptized two days later at St. Thomas Lutheran Church in Hohenbostel, a church that would remain central to his life and family for generations.

Heinrich was born during a time of significant political and social change in Europe. His early years coincided with the period leading up to the French Revolutionary Wars and later the Napoleonic Wars, which brought instability, economic hardship, and military occupation to many German regions, including Hanover. These events shaped the world in which he grew up, influencing both the local economy and the lives of rural families.

Heinrich spent his life in Wichtringhausen, where he worked as a Halbmeier, a term used in northern Germany for a farmer who operated a medium-sized holding—larger than a small tenant but not among the largest landowners. This position placed him solidly within the rural agricultural structure of the time, where land, labor, and family were closely intertwined.

On July 29, 1808, Heinrich married Christine Dorothee Volker at St. Thomas Lutheran Church. Together they began raising a large family. As was common in that era, not all children survived to adulthood. The records show multiple losses in infancy and early childhood, reflecting the high mortality rates of the early 19th century, when disease and limited medical knowledge made survival uncertain.

After Christine’s death in 1832, Heinrich remarried on February 5, 1833, to Hanne Friederike Hoppe, and continued to build his household and farm. His life, like that of many rural Germans at the time, was marked by hard physical labor, strong religious faith, and a deep reliance on family.

During Heinrich’s lifetime, Europe was gradually changing. The end of the Napoleonic era brought the reorganization of German territories, including Hanover’s transition from an electorate to a kingdom and later its political ties to Britain. Despite these broader political developments, daily life in villages like Wichtringhausen remained largely agricultural and traditional.

By the time Heinrich reached later life, broader economic pressures—including population growth, limited land availability, and changing agricultural conditions—were beginning to push younger generations to look beyond Germany for opportunity. Although Heinrich himself never left his homeland, this environment would influence his children, including his son Friedrich, who would later emigrate to America and establish the family’s presence in the United States.

In his later years, Heinrich became a Leibzüchter, a retired farmer who had transferred active management of the farm to the next generation while retaining rights to live on the property and receive support. This arrangement was common in German farming communities and ensured continuity of both family and land.

Heinrich (Christian) Bremer died on December 13, 1856, in Wichtringhausen at the age of 73. He was buried at St. Thomas Lutheran Church in Hohenbostel, where he had been baptized, married, and remained connected throughout his life.

Heinrich’s life represents the roots of the Bremer family story—firmly grounded in the agricultural traditions of northern Germany. Though he never left his homeland, the values he lived by—faith, perseverance, and dedication to family—were carried forward by his descendants. Within a generation, those descendants would cross the Atlantic, endure the challenges of immigration, and help build a new life in America, continuing the legacy he began.

On Dec 31 1877 the State of Iowa deeded land to the Sioux City and St. Paul Railroad. On Nov 1 1882 the north one half of section 13, Horton township was sold to an individual for $1300. Six days later the land was sold for $1840 and one day later for $2160. Finally on Dec 29 1890 the land was sold to Heinrich Bremer of Crete, Illinois for $3820. The legal papers were recorded in the Osceola County Courthouse on Mar 19 1891.
Whether Henry Bremer (son of Heinrich) brought the legal papers for the land purchase to the Osceola Courthouse is not known, but it is known that he was here in 1892. Henry started farming and was joined in the spring of 1894 by his brother Herman. The two men worked together that year.
In 1897 the land was purchased from Heinrich Bremer by the two brothers, each purchasing a quarter section for $2000. Henry bought the west quarter and Herman the east one. The land still belongs to the Bremer family and is farmed by descendants. Martha Bremer (Allen's wife) and Tom Bremer living on the respective farms.11

Memo10 Apr 2026Biography: Heinrich (Henry) Conrad Bremer (1838–1897)

Heinrich (Henry) Conrad Bremer was born on December 30, 1838, in Hannover, in the Kingdom of Hanover (now part of Germany). He was baptized just days later, on January 4, 1839, at St. Aegidius Church in Hannover. His early life unfolded during a time of political unrest and economic difficulty across the German states, conditions that led many families to seek better opportunities in America.

In 1855, at the age of 16, Heinrich immigrated to the United States with his parents and siblings, arriving in New York City aboard the sailing ship Hermann. The journey took seven weeks and was not without danger. During the crossing, another vessel struck their ship, piercing the hull near where his father was lying. The hole was temporarily plugged with pillows until repairs could be made—a vivid reminder of the risks faced by immigrants seeking a new life.

Heinrich’s arrival in America came during a period of massive immigration and westward expansion. The country was rapidly growing, and land in the Midwest offered opportunity to those willing to work hard. By 1860, he was living in Nebraska Territory, reflecting the westward movement of many immigrant families in search of farmland.

His young adulthood was shaped by national conflict. Heinrich served in the Union Army during the American Civil War as a volunteer in Company B, 4th Regiment, Missouri State Militia Cavalry. This unit was primarily involved in protecting communities and maintaining order in border regions, an important but often overlooked part of the war effort.

Following the war, Heinrich returned to civilian life and settled in Illinois. On October 4, 1866, he married Marie Dorothea (Friedricka) Drangmeister at St. John’s Lutheran Church of Eagle Lake near Beecher, Illinois. Together they established a farm in Crete Township, Will County, where they raised a large family.

Life in rural Illinois during the late 19th century required constant labor and resilience. Farming was done entirely by hand or with horse-drawn equipment, and families depended heavily on one another for survival. Heinrich and Friedricka had ten children, though tragically, several did not survive to adulthood. In December 1883, the family suffered a devastating loss when four of their children died within a single week from diphtheria, a common and often deadly disease before the advent of modern vaccines and antibiotics. Such losses, while heartbreaking, were not uncommon in that era and reflect the harsh realities of 19th-century life.

Despite these hardships, Heinrich continued to build his farm and provide for his family. By the late 1800s, the expansion of railroads was transforming the Midwest, opening new markets and increasing land values. In 1890, Heinrich purchased land in Horton Township, Osceola County, Iowa—part of a larger pattern of migration as families sought fertile farmland on the expanding frontier. This land, originally tied to railroad development following land grants such as those associated with the Sioux City and St. Paul Railroad, would later become the foundation of the Bremer family farms in Iowa.

Although Heinrich himself remained in Illinois, his sons began farming the Iowa land in the early 1890s, continuing the family’s agricultural legacy. In 1897, the land was formally transferred to his sons, establishing what would become multi-generational family farms still held by descendants many years later.

In July 1897, Heinrich, then in declining health, prepared his will. The document reflects both his concern for his wife’s well-being and his intention to provide fairly for his children, noting that some had already received financial assistance. It also demonstrates the practical and orderly approach he brought to both family and farm life.

Heinrich passed away on September 1, 1897, in Crete, Illinois, at the age of 58. He was laid to rest at St. John’s Lutheran Church of Eagle Lake North Cemetery, the same church that had played a central role in his family’s life.

Heinrich Conrad Bremer’s life tells the story of an immigrant who left Europe in search of opportunity, endured the dangers of transatlantic travel, served his adopted country during the Civil War, and helped establish a farming legacy that would continue for generations. From the old world of pre-industrial Europe to the expanding frontier of the American Midwest, his life bridged two worlds and laid the foundation for the family history that followed.

Note (fam)Mar 1895Note: Herman John Bremer and Louise Piepho Mar 1895 Horton Township, Osceola, Iowa, United States. Herman and Louise returned to Iowa after they married, and built a comfortable home on the virgin prairie land. In 1899 Herman Bremer purchased 128 acres in the north west corner of section 18, Fairview township for $3575. This land was used for pasture in the early years. Prior to the road grading on the north side of section 18, the steep hill was the site of hill climbing competition for cars. According to reports, few cars ever made the forward climb, but the competition was always challenging. Tobogganing, skiing, and sledding were the winter activities on the hill. This land is now (1997) farmed by Wayne Bremer. As Herman's family increased, the house became cramped, so remodeling was done and finally in the early 1900's several rooms were added. During late 1929 Herman and Louise built a new smaller home. At that time Harry and Emma Bremer moved into the big house. In the mid 1930's the smaller house was moved one half mile east to Fairview section 18. Herman, Louise and Albert lived there until 1939 when Herman and Louise moved into Ocheyedan. In 1917 Herman bought another 160 acres, this quarter was in section 24 of Horton township, the northeast corner. This farm was bought for $24,000. The farm became Carl Bremer's, then Dennis Bremer's and at present (1997) is farmed by Keith Bremer. Herman and Louise Bremer were active members of Zion Lutheran Church throughout their life in Iowa. Herman held several offices in the church, seventeen years as an Elder. He also held township offices. O1

Herman Bremer Rites are Held
Passed Away at His Home in Ocheyedan; Services Held in Horton
Herman Bremer, a highly respected citizen of Horton township and Ocheyedan for the past 47 years, passed away at his home in Ocheyedan Wednesday evening of last week. Mr Bremer's sickness dates back 17 years when he became afflicted with cancer in the roof of his mouth. During the last few years the disease spread rapidly as no medical aid seemed to help him. Until a few weeks before his death Mr Bremer was able to be up and around and to make visits to the business district.
Herman Bremer was born at Endor, IL, on February 1, 1869, and died on October 29, 1941, at the age of 72 years, 8 months and 14 days. He joined the Lutheran church at Crete, IL, where he grew to manhood. In the spring of 1894 he came to Osceola county, settling in Horton township, where he took possession of his farm. The next spring he returned to Illinois, where he was united in marriage to Louise Piepho at Eagle Lake. Mr Bremer and his bride returned to this county, settling on the farm in Horton township, where they lived until 1939, when they moved to Ocheyedan to spend their declining years.
He is survived by his widow and five children: Carl, Albert, Mrs Edna Philiph, Harry and Mrs Ora Reuter, all of Ocheyedan; 17 grand-children; two sisters, Mary Rinkenberger of Dyer, IL, and Frieda Reckow of Brethren, MI.
Mr Bremer was an honored and respected man in his community always lending his aid for the best. He was entrusted with various offices in Horton township during his long residence there and served as an elder of the Horton Lutheran church for about 17 years.
Services were held at the home in the south part of town Sunday afternoon, after which the body was taken to the Horton Lutheran church, where the last rites were held, Rev E J Kallsen, his pastor, paid an eloquent tribute to Mr Bremer's life. Interment was made in the church cemetery.

Herman John Bremer was born on February 15, 1869, in Endor, Crete Township, Will County, Illinois. He was born just a few years after the American Civil War, during a period when the United States was rebuilding and expanding westward. His parents, Heinrich (Henry) Conrad Bremer and Marie Dorothea Drangmeister, were part of the wave of German immigrants and their descendants who settled in the Midwest, bringing with them strong Lutheran faith traditions and a deep commitment to farming.

Herman grew up in rural Illinois, where life centered around agriculture, church, and family. As a boy, he attended school locally and was confirmed in 1883 at St. John’s Lutheran Church of Eagle Lake near Beecher, Illinois. His upbringing reflected the realities of late 19th-century rural life—long hours of manual labor, limited technology, and a close-knit community built around shared values.

In the spring of 1894, at the age of 25, Herman moved west to Osceola County, Iowa, part of the continued expansion into the fertile prairie lands of the Midwest. This movement was typical of the time, as families sought new opportunities through farming. Much of the land was still considered “virgin prairie,” requiring immense effort to break, cultivate, and make productive.

In February 1895, Herman returned to Illinois to marry Louise Piepho at St. John’s Lutheran Church. The couple then returned to Iowa to begin their life together on the prairie. They built a home and established a farm in Horton Township, where they would live for over four decades.

In 1899, Herman purchased 128 acres in the northwest corner of Section 18 in Fairview Township for $3,575. This land was initially used for pasture. Before roads were improved, a steep hill on the property became a local landmark, used for early automobile hill-climbing competitions. Few cars could successfully make the climb, highlighting how new and unreliable automobiles still were at the turn of the century. In winter, the same hill became a gathering place for sledding, skiing, and tobogganing—an example of how rural communities found recreation in their surroundings.

As Herman’s family grew—eventually including five children: Carl, Albert, Edna, Harry, and Ora—the original house became too small. Additions were made in the early 1900s to accommodate the expanding household. Like most farm families of the time, their lives revolved around hard work, cooperation, and self-sufficiency.

In 1917, Herman expanded his farming operation by purchasing an additional 160 acres in Section 24 of Horton Township for $24,000, a significant investment that reflected both ambition and the rising value of farmland during that period. This expansion occurred during World War I, when agricultural demand and prices were high due to wartime needs.

Herman’s adult life spanned a period of tremendous agricultural change. When he began farming, nearly all work was done with horses and hand labor. Over time, early mechanization began to appear, although change came gradually to smaller farms. Despite these advances, farming remained physically demanding and heavily dependent on weather and market conditions.

The prosperity of the 1910s was followed by hardship during the Great Depression. Like many farmers, Herman faced falling crop prices and economic uncertainty. Although northwest Iowa was not at the center of the Dust Bowl, drought and financial pressures were still very real. These were difficult years that tested the resilience of farm families.

In late 1929, as the Depression began, Herman and Louise built a smaller home, and their son Harry and his wife Emma moved into the larger farmhouse. During the mid-1930s, the smaller house was moved a half mile east within Section 18—an example of the practical, resourceful approach common in rural life at the time. Herman, Louise, and their son Albert lived there until 1939, when Herman and Louise moved into the town of Ocheyedan to spend their later years.

Throughout his life, Herman was deeply involved in his church and community. He was a lifelong member of Zion Lutheran Church in Horton Township, serving approximately seventeen years as an elder. He also held various township offices, reflecting the trust and respect he earned within the community. In rural America, such roles were essential to maintaining local governance and social structure.

By the time Herman moved into town around 1939, the world was again at war with the outbreak of World War II. Though he was in his later years, he witnessed the beginning of another global conflict that would profoundly shape the country his family lived in.

Herman suffered from cancer of the roof of his mouth for approximately 17 years before his death. Despite his illness, he remained active and was able to be up and about until shortly before the end of his life.

He passed away on October 29, 1941, in Ocheyedan, Iowa, at the age of 72. Funeral services were held at Zion Lutheran Church, the center of his spiritual life for decades, and he was laid to rest in the church cemetery.

Herman John Bremer’s life reflected the story of many Midwestern farm families. He helped transform raw prairie into productive farmland, raised a family rooted in faith and hard work, and lived through a period that saw America evolve from a largely agrarian society into a modern nation. From the post–Civil War era of his birth to the brink of World War II at his death, his life spanned one of the most transformative periods in American history.
